Rick, always glad to come and read your articles each day.
I have a thumb drive I keep on my keychain configured with the wonderful Portable Apps, http://portableapps.com/, (of which, WinDirStat is a download) which I use as a "tech toolkit" of sorts, for when I visit friends and family, and they ask me to "look at their computer real quick"..
(Sounds like you do, too)

These types of utilities are -- as you clearly state -- quite useful in that they help folks who don't happen to be Computer Science Majors "see" how it is that their "huge" hard drive is full (all of a sudden). You are absolutely correct, the average user has no clue about file management.
Nor do they seem to realize that each program they install merely 'bloats' what the operating system has to keep track of, can cause a conflict with existing programs, probably increases boot time and consumes RAM, adds another vector for a hacker to try to exploit.. sigh. As a tech, I see it everyday.. three tax programs and two different accounting programs, half a dozen 'media players', 3-to-12 browser toolbars, both Outlook and Thunderbird.. 6 photo editors..

Your opening sentence really and truly needs to be "shouted from the rooftops". In computers, you want lean. As lean as possible.

One last hint for your readers (should they want to start deleting files); set a Restore Point before you begin.

Keep it up, Rick. You got top-drawer stuff here!

Rick--
Your readers who are looking for this kind of tool might like the one I find handy -- WinDirStat has a graphic representation (as well as "detail" view) and allows you to delete, copy, etc. from inside it.. it's a freebie as well.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=91252&package_id=96219

There's a portable version too, available on Portable Apps
