I totally agree. You must be "proactive" and not "reactive" when it comes to protecting your pc.
Several good firewall programs are really good
at preventing penetration. One I use and recommend
is Black Ice. It is not free, but very effective.
There are others. One way to really prevent any
spyware or malware infection, is to use a bootable
CD with a linux based OS like Freespire or MiniLinux
etc. Then go online and do whatever you wish. When
finished, simply remove the CD and reboot back to
Windows.

TechPaul,

The information and steps you have provided is an article in itself... Readers, those steps Paul has provided are easy to maintain. It's just getting it in place... Heed his advice!

Beautifully written..

I am a Support & Repair tech, "in the trenches" so to speak, and I can assure readers of this article that when it comes to their computers- an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.

* Keep Windows and your programs updated.
* Install a "security suite", or..
* Turn on (or install) a firewall.
* run an up-to-date antivirus.
* run one (1) anti-spyware in active mode, and back that up with a second, passive, tool (such as the program described so well here) run manually.
* Use "paranoid" common sense when surfing the Internet, and viewing the stuff that lands in your Inbox.

That may sound like a lot to do, but it's really not. And, you'll be glad you did.

Bill,

Thank you... I started using this application, approximately 3 months ago, after I read about it on your blog (Tech Thoughts). I have been completely sold on it ever since and try to promote it to my friends and family whenever I can.

Thank you,
