Super protection from those internet threats…

March 17, 2009

SuperAntiSpyware

One of the first tools I go to in the event of a suspected internet induced infection is SuperAntiSpyware. Over the years I have time-tested a variety of products to protect my system, which were good at their specific functions, but I have come to the conclusion that using SuperAntiSpyware, in conjunction with my anti-virus protection, provides a multi-dimensional layer of protection that is really hard to beat. SuperAntiSpyware will detect and remove spyware, adware, malware, trojan dialers, worms, keyloggers, hijackers, parasites, rootkits, rogue security products and other threats. Another primo feature that  is most impressive is that it will not rob your system of its’ needed operating system resources and slow your computer down.

SuperAntiSpyware

There is a “FREE” version, as well as a paid professional version.  The “FREE” option does not include the scheduling, automatic updates, daily definition updates, or real-time protection that the professional version offers. Do not let this deter you from using the “FREE” version. I had been using the “FREE” version for over a year, where I performed manual updates and scans; and, just recently started using the professional version to give my system that additional armor of “automated” protection. Many computer techs out there use this software and will tell you to make it part of your routine maintenance and security strategy.

Learn how to send and receive Hotmail from Your Gmail account at “the How-To Geek”

March 15, 2009

With Windows Live Hotmail recently enabling POP3 support (see this article), the web site (blog) “the How-To Geek” has provided step-by-step illustration on how to use your Gmail account to send and receive Hotmail [ CLICK HERE ] .

Addendum:  As a followup to this posting, if you are an “inbox.com” susbscriber, I would also like to note that the Windows Live Hotmail POP3 settings can be introduced into your “inbox.com” email account settings.  Inbox.com is an excellent web email client resource, with multiple features (e.g. 5GB email, online file storage, organizer, photo management, notes). Inbox.com has a setting where you can pull down your email from multiple POP3 accounts.  I personally use inbox.com to harbor (backup) my multiple email accounts.

Learning about “Teenager Internet Usage”

March 15, 2009

One of my fellow blogging friends, Bill Mullins (Tech Thoughts) , who has written extensively about information security and the internet threats that await us on a daily basis, posted an article:

“How Does Your Teenager Use the Internet? – Should You Care?”

I truly believe that many parents have no idea of what their children are being exposed to on the internet. The portrayals of violence and sex are the hot topics; and, when I use the term “portrayal” I am not using that loosely. If you can think of it, someone has posted it on the internet. It is all presented in a “virtual” reality (almost real) sense. The Social Networks that are out there take peer pressure to a whole new level; often are the cultivator’s to unethical behavior and often serve as a predatory playground. Your children, if not guarded closely, can be innocently exposed and desensitized to the point that their conscience (morals and ethics) are affected.

If you are a concerned parent and want to learn more, I strongly encourage that you read Bill’s article [ CLICK HERE ]. Reflected below is a clip from the article that makes a point that hit home with me. I commend Mr. Mullins for taking the time to serve as the messenger for this most important topic.

How Does Your Teenager Use The Internet? – Should You Care?

Posted by: Bill Mullins on: March 14, 2009

Consider this – would you drop off your child, or teenager, in a neighborhood where more than half of the buildings were adult stores, and which was potentially full of predators? In my view, if you allow your child, or younger teenager, to interact with the Internet unsupervised, or without having communicated to your child information concerning potential on-line dangers, this is what you may be doing.

A new way to get Windows Live Hotmail

March 14, 2009

Windows Live HotmailPOP3 technology has now rolled out to Hotmail customers WORLDWIDE! This will enable you to  use your email client, on your PC or mobile phone, to pull down your Hotmail.  Of course you must have an account with Windows Live Hotmail to take advantage of this new feature.

When you set up Hotmail in the e-mail program on your PC or mobile device, you may be asked for the following information:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

What is POP3? It is a protocol that allows almost any e-mail software program that you’ve installed on your mobile phone or PC* to get messages from your e-mail inbox on the web and deliver them in the designated program.

Although you always could access Hotmail on your web-enabled mobile phone by going to mobile.live.com, now that Hotmail has POP3, you can get to it more conveniently using the e-mail software on your PC or mobile device* such as a Windows Mobile phone, iPhone, or BlackBerry.

Enhance Your Windows Wallpaper

March 13, 2009

When I find great software where the author is dedicated to meeting the needs of the end-user, I will make a point to applaud the author (programmer) by posting the software on the blog. One such author, who get’s a standup ovation and is a repeat performer,  is John Conners, who is the programming genius behind John’s Background Switcher.

John's Background Switcher

If you spend a great deal of time at your PC it is important to change the scenery once in awhile to help keep your mood enlighted. John’s Background Switcher is awesome in the aspect that it will automatically change your background (wallpaper) images at pre-determined intervals. The real power behind the software is the ability to pull images from a variety of sources and plaster them on your screen in a variety of different ways. The most recent change, which prompted this writeup, is that you can now pull images from any Media RSS feed. This option alone literally enables the user to pull down a vast array of images from a vast array of media sources. If you are not using this software, then you are missing out on a premier “FREE” software package that is a real joy to use AND see. [ GET IT HERE ]

The easy way to backup your Firefox profiles…

March 12, 2009

We recently discussed the importance of backing up anything that is of importance to us (“Backing up files you personally value…”).  When we use our web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc…) we do not think about backing up our bookmark favorites and/or the profiles which we have painstakingly accumulated.

If you are an advocate of the Mozilla products, such as the Firefox Browser and the Thunderbird email client, I highly recommend that you download and try “MozBackup”MozBackup is a simple utility for creating backups of Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla Sunbird, Flock, SeaMonkey, Mozilla Suite, Spicebird, Songbird and Netscape profiles.

Your profiles, in a sense is the personality that you have given these applications, which includes your bookmarks, mail contacts, history, extensions, cache, etc…  You will definitely feel at a loss if you lose your Mozilla profile settings in the event of a system crash or malfunction. The utility is very easy to use and will walk you through the entire “short and quick” process (see screenshots below).  I currently use this utility to backup my Firefox profiles and settings.  Restoring from the backup is as easy as doing the backup itself.

This program is freeware and works on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista. It’s developed in Czech republic.  There is a portable version, as well as an install version.  You can get MozBackup [ HERE ] .

OctoMom – 8 bits = 1 byte

March 11, 2009

The OctoMom story [see here] is one of those sensations that creates a transference of the mind from the “real” problems in our world.  OctoMom in tech terms…  OctoMom birthed a “byte” of children.  They would easily fit on my flash drive!

I really had a good laugh today over this story when someone sent me a link to this video. It is a videotape of Nadya Suleman delivering her eight children in a California hospital. It is available for upward of $1 million (LOL).
