Key visual signs of a badware infection…

April 20, 2009

Many beginners to computers may not recognize what the symptoms are when their computer has been infected by badwareBadware, for the sake of this article, is defined as malware, spyware, popups, adware, trojans, virusesall the bad stuff that can infiltrate your computer without your permission. It is important that when you recognize the signs, to shutdown your PC and get help.

Recently during a visit to 411-Spyware.com I noticed that the blogmaster, Kristopher Dukes, has provided a good description, throughout the blog, that describes “when you are infected with badware”, that I would like to share with you.

When you’re infected with badware — whether it’s “Spyware object detected!” Popup, spyware, adware, a Trojan, or a virus — there are a few key symptoms. Have you noticed…

Slow computer performance: It just takes one parasite like “Spyware object detected!” Popup to slow your computer dramatically. If your PC takes longer than usual to reboot, or if your Internet connection is unusually slow, you may be infected with “Spyware object detected!” Popup.

New desktop shortcuts or switched homepage
: Badware like “Spyware object detected!” Popup may change your Internet settings to redirect your homepage to another site. Badware can even add desktop shortcuts to your PC.

Annoying popups
: Badware can bombard your computer with popup ads, even when you’re not online. Through these popups, you may be tricked into downloading more spyware.

I encourage you to make 411-Spyware.com one of your daily visits.  It is important that when we recognize badware that there are solutions.  As Kris states “before you set fire to your PC”, there is a solution.

A Full Featured Windows Clipboard Utility…

April 19, 2009

Did you know that there are many people who do not know what the Windows clipboard is all about or how to use “cut, copy or paste”? People new to using the clipboard find the concept hard to grasp and really do not understand the benefit of the clipboard. In this article it is my mission to provide a short tutorial on using the clipboard (for Beginners) and then show you a nice utility that is available (for FREE) that makes the clipboard functionality all that more powerful (for Power Users)…

Clipboard Beginners…

The Windows Clipboard is not visible. It is a temporary storage area that allows you to store a block of information using the “cut or copy” menu commands. The block of information can be text, a picture or a file. For beginners, start out by “cutting or copying” some text to the clipboard. The easiest method to do this is take your mouse pointer “I” beam and place  it at the beginning of the text you desire to copy, then hold down the “left” mouse button and drag it across the text. The text will be highlighted as you perform this. After you have completed highlighting the text, release the left mouse button, place the mouse pointer anywhere on the highlighted text, then “right click” and select “copy” on the menu. When you select “copy” on the menu it copies what you have highlighted to the Windows clipboard. When you select “cut”  on the menu it cuts it from the application and places it on the Windows clipboard. Remember you cannot see the actual clipboard and the clipboard can only store one block of information at a time. Once you have copied your selected text to the clipboard you can then “paste” it into another location. For example, you might want to copy a section of text from a website, and then paste that text into an e‑mail message. To “paste”, simply go to the location you want to paste the text, “left” click the mouse at the exact location, then “right click” and select “paste”. You can practice using the clipboard at this website “WebMasterNow.com”. The “cut, copy and paste” selection can usually be invoked from any software application menu (usually under “Edit”) or can be invoked using Windows hot keys (see below).

Clipboard Power Users…

If you are a writer, blogger, graphic editor, where you are making multiple “cut, copy, and paste” routines to the clipboard, then you probably know that using a “clipboard manager” is a real timesaver in completing the task at hand. A clipboard manager lets you save and use an almost unlimited number of text and image clipboard captures.

As a blogger, the clipboard manager that I have come to personally like is “ClipGuru”.  ClipGuru is not the prettiest app around and it requires a short learning curve; but it gets the job done. Once you get the hang of it, you will wonder what you did without it.

ClipGuru

Two things about this small application really made an impression with me.

  1. PortabilityClipGuru™ may be installed as an executable ClipGuru.exe file which requires no install procedure and makes no system modifications; thus, making it a portable app.
  2. Security – Release 2.8 attempts to notify users if the Windows clipboard has been ‘hijacked’ by a program continuously flooding the clipboard. While it is unable to identify the specific application which is hijacking the clipboard, it does attempt to notify you by de-activating ClipGuru and setting a ‘Clipboard Hijacked’ message on the ClipGuru panel. This opton can be suppressed via the ClipGuru Options Panel.

Clips that you accumulate can be stored in sets for future reference and pasting into applications.  This little app has become one of my favorite utilities for collecting article information and facts for the blog.

Digital Free-Hand Drawing Software (for FREE)

April 17, 2009

This past year I have seen numerous photo and graphic editors pop up from nowhere and most have been quite remarkable… If you are someone who has talent in the area of sketching, drawing or painting, then you will be interested in knowing that there is  “FREE” software package available, called “SmoothDraw”. SmoothDraw supports many kinds of brushes (pen, pencil, dry media, airbrush, bristle brush, image hose, etc.), retouch tools, layers, image adjustment, and many effects… According to the website SmoothDraw works great with tablets and Tablet PCs. I found it worked very well, using what limited talents I had, by just using the mouse.

The install appears to consume only 3.5 MBs of space; however, is dependent on .NET Framework 2.0, which is common on most of today’s systems. I personally found this app to be quite user friendly and could also serve some benefit to those who need something to enhance and touch up photos. SmoothDraw is a new one on me and appears to be quite a powerful application, considering its small size. I encourage you to click the screenshot below to get a good look at the clean interface of this application.

System Requirements
Win98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista
.NET Framework 2.0

Recommend a tablet/stylus for drawing

If you are a user of Universal Extractor, as I am, you can take the SmoothDraw install file (setup file) and extract it to any directory you desire.  Using this method, based on my testing, SmoothDraw can be made into a portable app (for your flash drive) and used on other computers that are supported by the .NET Framework 2.0.

What’s On My PC… FREE Layers of Protection!

April 16, 2009

I have had many people approach me and ask,

“What is a good Security Suite to install on my PC?”

Layers

For the sake of this article, a “Security Suite” is a proprietary combo package that offers multi-dimensional levels of protection (against spyware, viruses, malware, rootkits, etc.).

I don’t know why (well I do), I start to cringe when I hear people tell me their stories of using the “high powered” security suites (that cost money); that they either installed or simply are using because it was on their new PC. I have found it ends up being a convoluted mess that causes the user to become frustrated; often is a burden to the PC; and often ends up where they let their subscription expire (thus having no protection at all). I also get the feeling that people, who use these security suites, have a false sense of security and think they are “ultimately” protected from anything and everything.

I have experienced just about every type of security software package out there. Am I an expert? No… But, the strategy I have been adhering to, has worked; especially when it comes to “layers” of protection that I set up on my computer; without causing my computer to come to a crawl. I use no Security Suites, never have, never will…

If you plan to go the route I am about to suggest (of no Security Suite), you will need to uninstall your current security suite software. The uninstall of security software can be very tricky and I encourage you to visit the vendor’s site to explore this subject or get a tech to assist you. I also posted (2)-two recent articles on this topic:

AppRemover… Antivirus and Antispyware Uninstaller!

Uninstalling and Installing AntiVirus Software…

The listing below are the layers of protection (all FREE) I have installed on my PC…  I encourage you to check for comments following this article, due some of the techs out there may add further information or make suggestions.  All of the software reflected is FREE…

You can click on the links below to explore each specific title:

Common Sense – You can not install this… I have found that if your gut says “beware”; then follow your gut.  Also, I am not an advocate of social sites, porn sites, pirating sites, etc…. If it is something that violates morality; believe me, you will be victimized.  “Where the people gather, the cybercriminals prey”. Please use common sense!

Microsoft Windows Updates – You should set your computer to automatically update or at least alert you that updates are available. Either way, this is very, very important. Keep your operating system up to date. Microsoft usually unleashes updates the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  You can learn more about Windows Updates and “patch Tuesday” [ HERE ] .

Software Updates – Keep any software on your PC up-to-date. Popular title software that is used by the masses are often targeted by hackers looking for methods to exploit any vulnerabilities or code flaws. I currently use Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) to assist me with maintaining software updates.

Windows Vista Firewall – I currently use the Vista Firewall and have no other firewall software installed.

Properly configured, it can stop many kinds of malware before they can infect your computer or other computers on your network. Windows Firewall, which comes with Windows Vista, is turned on by default and begins protecting your computer as soon as Windows starts.[ source: Microsoft ]

WinPatrol – a robust SECURITY MONITOR , WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. The software puts a small “Scotty Dog” in the tray area that will bark when a change occurs. It is strictly for monitoring and does not fix anything. You can also get full details about WinPatrol [ HERE ].

Avast! Antivirus Home Edition – a full-featured antivirus package, with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built-in, that is designed exclusively for non-commercial & home use. You can also get full details about Avast! [ HERE ].

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware – an easy-to-use, simple, and effective anti-malware application. Use the “Free” version of this app to manually scan your system for malware. You can also get full details about MalwareBytes Anti-Malware [ HERE ].

SuperAntiSpyware – a next generation scanning system that goes beyond the typical rules based scanning methods. The Multi-Dimensional Scanning system detects existing threats as well as threats of the future by analyzing threat characteristics in addition to code patterns. Use the “Free” version of this app to manually scan your system for spyware. You can also get full details about SuperAntiSpyware [ HERE ] .

Spyware Blaster – can help keep your system secure, without interfering with the “good side” of the web. And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. It works alongside the programs you have to help secure your system. With the “Free” version, you will have to manually run the updates to keep your system sufficiently protected.

Firefox Browser – I currently test all of the main player browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera, and Firefox).  I currently use Firefox as my main browser. You will find that most Techs are an advocate of Firefox.

Web of Trust (WOT) – WOT is a free Internet security add-on for your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) that will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It’s easy and it’s free. If you do not install this, then I recommend you read the first item on my list (common sense). You can also get full details about WOT [ HERE ].

OpenDNS – I currently use OpenDNS as a layer of protection from web site phlishing; plus, by setting up an account with OpenDNS, I can use the built in Parental Controls to filter out and block what content reaches my computer. Installing or setting up OpenDNS can be intimidating to those with non-technical experience; however, I encourage you to read more about OpenDNS [ HERE ] .

Optional: I opted to list some additional protection, that I currently use, due to my ongoing testing of software and “test” visits to the underbelly of the internet.

Sandboxie – runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. You can get full details about Sandboxie [ HERE ] .

Shadow Defender – This is the only software on the list that you would have to buy; however, if are someone who messes around with your system more than you should, then this may be for you. With Shadow Defender you can run your system in a virtual environment, called Shadow Mode. Any software changes or malware attacks that occur, will occur in the virtual environment, not in the real environment. If attacks happen, all you need to do is to reboot your system. I currently use Shadow Defender to test software products. I place the PC in shadow mode, install the software and perform my testing. Following my testing, I reboot and voila’, my computer is back to the original state it was prior to going into Shadow mode.

Reflected below are tips and other “security software” recommendations made by the  “Techs” who routinely contribute to the blog:

AVZ Antiviral Toolkit (recommend by AKSHAT) – is a Portable AntiMalware and Portable AntiSpyware Solution that was created by a Russian named Oleg Zaytsev to remove adware and spyware, network worms, trojan horses (Trojan, TrojanDownloader, TrojanSpy) and Dialers.  This app would be used when you are dealing with a system that you suspect is infected.

Spyware Terminator (recommended by the Crazy World of G) - will scan your computer for known threats and report findings in a manner that is easy to read and interpret.  Free comprehensive protection that is comparable to competitors’ paid versions!

Threatfire (recommended by the Crazy World of G) – continually protects your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats like normal antivirus software. By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is able to stop never- before-seen “zero-day” threats solely by detecting their malicious activity.

Hazard Shield (recommended by the Crazy World of G) – is an antimalware program that scans for any and every threat we can get our hands on. These include malicious items such as malware, viruses, spyware, trojans, backdoors, dialers and much more.Hazard Shield also comes with realtime protection that removes threats the instant they appear and before they can cause damage.  An excellent review on this application, “Hammer Malware With Hazard Shield” [source: Bill Mullins Weblog – Tech Thoughts]

Comodo Firewall (recommended by Tech-for Everyone) – is a multi-layered security application that keeps hackers out and personal information in. Built from the ground upwards with your security in mind, this award winning firewall constantly monitors and defends your system from inbound and outbound attacks. TechPaul has indicated this software firewall is for the more advanced.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (recommended by Tech-for Everyone) - blocks hackers from infiltrating your home PC by hiding your computer from unsolicited network traffic.

Router / Modem Tip (by Tech-for Everyone) – a most frequently overlooked aspect of protecting your PC’s is placing a router directly behind the modem, even if you aren’t ’splitting’ your Internet to multiple computers.

Internet Security Blog – Check Out “Sandboxie”…

April 14, 2009

I happened to notice today, at the “Internet Security Blog”, the blogmaster is featuring an article on “Sandboxie” that I encourage my readers to take a look at. “Sandboxie” is an application that  runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents the “isolated programs” from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. For example, I had a friend that was frequent visitor to an online gaming site that he could not live without; however, he suspected the site was causing him some issues. In this case I had the user run the browser and visit the site using “Sandboxie”.  Any issues he experienced remained in a sandboxed environment and did not impact the integrity of his computer.

Internet Security Blog

The “Internet Security Blog” does a fine job of providing insight and detailed instructions on how “Sandboxie” works. The “Internet Security Blog” is another fine example of blogging at a premier level, that I have added to my blogroll (called the “Launch Pad”). I encourage you to visit the site [ CLICK HERE ] to learn more about “Sandboxie” and other ways you can protect yourself on the internet.

How to launch directly into a Powerpoint Show…

April 14, 2009

I have been doing Powerpoint presentations for years (at work and for my Church). I currently draft slides on a weekly basis that is used with my Church’s projection system (that I manage) and have prepared literally hundreds of customized presentations that are anywhere from 50 to 80 slides per presentation. I do not do Powerpoint the way they teach Powerpoint; however, that is another story in itself. What I want to point out to Powerpoint users, which I find for whatever reasons, most users do not know how to save their Powerpoint presentation as a “SHOW”. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I notice that the presenter will start up the Powerpoint software (editor), locate and load the presentation file, then fumble around trying to find the button to launch the actual presentation. All this, many times, is done while the audience is present. To me this does not project a good image of whatever you are about to present; sort of makes you look unprepared. Note:  If you must go that route, an easy way to launch the presentation, from within the Powerpoint software (editor) is just hit the “F5” key…

There is a much easier way… When you save a Powerpoint presentation, it is saved, by default, as a “Presentation” file with the file extension “.ppt”.  When I am preparing or editing my initial draft of the presentation, I will save it as a “Presentation” file (see below).

Presentation File

However, when I am satisfied with my final draft, instead of saving the presentation as a “Presentation” file; I will now save it as a “SHOW” file (see below).  The “SHOW” file will have a “.pps” file extension. I often will type “SHOW” after the filename so that I can readily see that it is a “SHOW” file.  In the end I have (2)-two files; the “Presentation” file and the “Show” file.  This way I also have a backup!

Powerpoint Show File

The advantages of this is huge.  Instead of having to deal with the Powerpoint software (editor), now when I click on my presentation “SHOW” file, it will launch directly into my presentation.  Saving your presentation as a “SHOW” file will have no impact on re-editing or changing the presentation.  If you need to edit the “SHOW” file, you simply launch Powerpoint, load the “SHOW” (.pps) file, make your edits, and then re-save it…
