Break the Email Chain – Stop the Lies!

September 17, 2009

How many of you receive on a daily basis those “forward” emails, such as funnies, hoaxes, jokes, surveys, chain letters, prayer requests, fake virus warnings, surveys, petitions, political attacks, etc. ?

Are we that gullible?  The answer is resoundingly, YES!

chainltr

I particularly like the ones where if you forward a prayer request to 10 people your prayers will be answered. I tried that one once and prayed that I would stop receiving chain emails!  That one didn’t work either; I am getting more of them : ) Besides, if your moment of religion is forwarding these types of emails, you better get your butt in Church.

I am going to give you some good advice. Delete forward emails, such as indicated, on the spot! I have yet to truly find one that really is of any benefit. Do not become part of the lie. Email chains spread panic,  insecurity, misinformation, and hate. Email chains are bandwidth hogs that lessen the effectiveness of email as a communication medium. As a matter of fact, we are destroying the credibility and security of our email systems because we are creating an environment of propaganda where we do not know what is true and what is not true.  I can tell you this much, if you rely on forward emails as your information source,  especially those with a political agenda, then you are truly lessening your credibility as a person in the know.

Keep in mind every time you forward that email, your email address is added to the other hundreds (and thousands) of email addresses that  have already been harvested.  In essence you are giving away information about yourself that could circulate worldwide and come back to haunt you. Chain emails feed on a persons psychic to the point that you, in good conscience, feel you need to forward it on!  Again, do not forward these emails and simply delete them.

My favorites in the email chain are the hoax emails. To give you an illustrative example of a hoax email that spreads panic (and lies); I received an email about how your cell phone can explode and become an instrument of death  when it is used while charging. Hoaxes, such as this, are very convincing; especially when there is horrific photo footage (see the example below).

Again, simply stated; “delete forward emails”; HOWEVER, if you feel the need to confirm information you receive in your email, you can Google it; OR use Snopes, Hoaxbusters, Hoax-Slayer, or ChainLetters.net, to name a few.  I usually head to Snopes first…

“Believe nothing and verify everything!”

An example of a hoax email:

I do this all the time.  I guess I won’t be doing it ANY more!

image
A few days ago, a person was recharging his mobile phone at home.
Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the Instrument still connected to the outlet.

image

After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground
with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.

image

He was rushed to the nearby hospital,
but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cell phones are a very useful modern invention.

image
However, we must be aware that it can also be an
instrument of death.

Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!

Share News Articles with Google Fast Flip

September 15, 2009

Google Labs has a new addition called Google Fast Flip…

image

Google Fast Flip displays captured images of news article pages from partner sites in such a way (similar to thumbnails) that you can literally flip through the various pages. You click on the story you want to read and you are taken directly to the source. I correlate Google Fast Flip with the speed dial that some of us use in our browsers such as Opera and Firefox.

Google Fast Flip is a web application that lets users discover and share news articles. It combines qualities of print and the Web, with the ability to “flip” through pages online as quickly as flipping through a magazine. It also enables users to follow friends and topics, discover new content and create their own custom magazines around searches.

The stories are grouped by categories, such as Entertainment, Business, Opinion, Politics and Most Viewed. Readers can flip through stories quickly by simply pressing the left- and right-arrow keys until they find one that catches their interest. Clicking on the story takes them directly to the publisher’s website.

You can click [ Here ] to see the sources currently used for Google Fast Flip.

Create Polaroids From Your Digital Photographs

September 14, 2009

Remember the Polaroids with the self-developing film and the white borders?  The Polaroid camera I was familiar with required ”pack film,” where you pulled the film out of the camera.  You watched as your photograph developed on the spot. Talk about nostalgia, there was something about how the finished product looked like with those cameras that sticks in your mind.

image If you have a desire to relive the look of the old Polaroids, you can by using the online (cloud app) called “ROLLIP”.

image

ROLLIP will walk you through the process of choosing the right effect (e.g. small poloaroid, soft effect), adding a decoration, adding text, uploading your photo and finally the transformation process.  At the end of the process you have an option of using a web link to view your Poloaroid, sharing via email and the social sites, or by simply downloading the photo to your PC (which will be in a .jpg format).

Become a Blackberry Pocket Cop

September 13, 2009

Baltimore City, MD Police Department, using Federal Stimulus money, is issuing  Blackberry devices to every patrol officer. Since I am a Blackberry owner I found this article quite intriguing. Definitely a 21st Century concept that just may be the beginning to a trend nationwide.  There are positives reflected in this story, as well as negatives.

A “What’s On My PC…” Web Clip!

Every Baltimore Patrol Officer To Get a BlackBerry

BlackBerry devices, which are made by Research in Motion, are likely to take the place of computers for officers who don’t have them in their cars, and laptops may not be replaced after they become obsolete. The devices are also equipped with global positioning software that will allow commanders to pinpoint exactly where officers are.

The devices allow officers to run warrants, check vehicle registrations, and pull up criminal histories and suspect photos. Officers who use them can be more efficient and spend more time outside of their cars…

Early reviews for the devices have been positive. Officers using Pocket Cops made twice as many arrests over a 3-month period than those equipped with radios or laptops, according to statistics provided by the department. They also hauled in more offenders on outstanding warrants.

The devices are also equipped with global positioning software that will allow commanders to pinpoint exactly where officers are. That technology concerns police union leaders, who suspect that officers might face undue scrutiny.

Keeping a pulse on the weather conditons…

September 11, 2009

Recently, one of my favorite weather monitoring applications (Weather Watcher Live) went from freeware to shareware. As indicated, I said “one of my favorites”.

imageAnother favorite weather application of mine, that is FREE, is very good, is “ad free”, and has been in the loop for some time is “Weather Pulse”. I did not realize how much I missed this weather app until I started using it again.

Weather Pulse is an integrated weather monitoring utility that displays detailed weather conditions, in an attractive interface, for whatever location(s) you desire. With Weather Pulse you can get current conditions, 5 Day Forecasts, Hourly Forecasts, numerous radar image options, and tone alerts. You can even set your wallpaper background to a weather radar image that will periodically update so that you know what the weather conditions are at any given time.

image

Weather Pulse also provides an interactive tray icon and desktop desklet that displays the current temperature. You can double click on either and the Weather Pulse application window will display.

If you want the weather at your fingertips, without ads, and is FREE (with no catches), then give Weather Pulse a try!
