Bookmarks4Techs: Site Update #6

July 18, 2010

If you have been following the blog, you may have noticed (and read) about Bookmarks4Techs.

Bookmarks4Techs is a new geek web project that I am currently playing around with. It is sort of in the experimental and tweaking mode; therefore you will see frequent changes occurring. In addition to 422 total bookmarked geek sites, I am now posting announcements when a new site is added to the collection, featured FREE software (that I use and endorse), featured sites (that I use and endorse) and some Geek Gear that I think is worth mentioning. You will also see in the sidebars of the site RSS feeds to some of my favorite techie type sites.

I plan to post the Bookmarks4Techs updates here on the blog on a regular basis. Any favorable (or unfavorable) comments or suggestions are welcome, in regards to these future updates.

Bookmarked Sites:  422 Total

Bookmarks4Techs.com

New Site Added:

Roger’s Information Security Blog

It started out as a place to be able to post links and news so I could find them again. I began adding my own commentary, and its proven surprisingly popular. Thanks for stopping by.  The search is in the upper right-hand side if you don’t see what you are looking for.

Featured FREE Software:

CCleaner

CCleaner is the number one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard drive space. It also cleans up traces of your online activities such as your internet history.

Featured Site:

TTC Shelbyville

The Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville created blogs for all of the different classes at this higher education institution as part of an online learning center found on our homepage.  Through the cooperation of WordPress (They support educational institutions!) we created this blog to communicate with students. This Technical Blog is for the Computer Information Technology class and whoever wants to read it.

A Powerful, but Easy to Use Media Converter

July 17, 2010

When I find it necessary to convert video and/or audio files from one file format to another, the media converter that I currently reach for is Oxelon Media Converter.

Oxelon

As with many of the media converters currently available, Oxelon has the ability to convert to/from many different formats [see here]; however, what causes me to reach for this converter are (2)-two factors:

Seamless integration with Explorer allows you to keep working with files as usual. You can right-click on the selected files, choose “Oxelon – Convert to Video” or “Oxelon – Convert to Audio” from the menu, and select the media format. In this way you can quickly launch Oxelon Media Converter with the specified files and with the defined destination format. After that, you just click “Conversion” and the process is started!

Oxelon Media Converter is one of the few video/audio encoding tools that can use four threads to take advantage of quad-core multi-processor systems. The great news is that you can adjust maximal amount of threads in the Settings. So, it is possible to take advantage of high-speed multi-conversion even on an eight-core system (and more).

The integration with Windows Explorer allows you to complete the conversion process in three clicks, plus you can select numerous files at a time to do batch conversions.  Drag and Drop to the Oxelon interface is also supported. You can also play the selected video or audio directly from the Oxelon interface if necessary. It is truly a powerful converter that is easy to use!

FLIQLO – Flip Style Clock Screensaver

July 17, 2010

As long as I have been using the computer, I have always been fascinated with the various types of clocks that can be installed on the computer that are replications of real clocks.

Recently I came across another clock to add to my collection, called FLIQLO.

FLIQLO

FLIQLO is the replication of the old flip style clocks and is installed on your PC, as a screensaver.

If you do not want it to be your screensaver, you can do what I do. Install FLIQLO, go into your screensaver settings and set your screensaver to none.  After that, search your PC for the file Fliqlo.scr, right click on the file Fliqlo.scr, select Send To on the menu, then select Desktop (create shortcut).  Once the shortcut appears on the desktop you can then start FLIQLO whenever you want to start it, by double clicking the shortcut.  I manually run all of my favorite clock screensavers this way via shortcuts I create.

Are you in need of some inspiration?

July 16, 2010

One of the functions I serve in my Church is that of the Multimedia Director. I have proudly served in that capacity for over 6 years. One of the challenges I often face is locating content to be used with our projection system (such as movies, backgrounds, etc…). I have learned to use the vast resources on the internet to engineer the Sunday morning service presentations. Often, a challenge I face is making sure (or honestly trying to make sure) that I get permission to use copyrighted material.

Magnificent Recently the Pastor contacted me about video, called “Magnificent”, that he had found on the internet at a site called Andie’s Isle.  It was at this point I went to work.

Andie's Isle

I contacted Andie, at at Andie’s Isle, to determine if there was a downloadable version of the video available, since the video was embedded on the site; AND, if possible could I use it?  Andie graciously worked with me to provide the video.

Being the good blogger, the good geek and most importantly the good Christian; this gave me the opportunity to thank Andie, at Andie’s Isle, by making her site shine here at What’s On My PC

To my readers; take a few moments to visit Andie’s Isle. That few moments will definitely be an uplifting experience that will prompt you to visit again and again.
