A Batch Image Converter that is FREE, FAST and EASY

August 21, 2010

If you own a digital camera don’t be fooled into thinking that you are at the mercy of the software that oftentimes ships with the camera. There are many other numerous software options available (for FREE) that will make your life much easier. For example, the simple task of resizing and converting a photo should be just that, “a simple task”; not a task where you are sorting through menus to find what you need to accomplish the task.

A FREE, FAST and EASY option, that I recently found for resizing photos, is called Photo Magician.

Photo Magician

Photo Magician is a small and easy to use program that allows you to quickly scale and convert your images. It will enable you to easily process several files at once and create custom conversion profiles. The supported formats include common ones like BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG and TIF but the application can handles some that are more special like RAW images, DDS, PCX, PSD, TARGA, WBMP and WMF.  There is also a drag and drop quick convert mode to make the conversion process even faster and easier.

Using Photo Magician is an easy step-by-step process:

  • Select the input folder (where your images are stored)
  • Select the output folder (where you want the resized images stored)
  • Select a “resizing” profile that you want to use
  • Select any additional options you wish to apply
  • Click on “Process Image”

As stated earlier there are numerous FREE software options out there to make your life with your photos (and digital camera) much easier and Photo Magician is one such example. In my testing of Photo Magician I found it to be one of the fastest image converters I have experienced. Keep an eye on this one; it will surely get even better.

Lock Down and Encrypt those Important Notes

August 20, 2010

Today I present to you a small (portable) software application, called fSekrit, that gives you the ability to safely store confidential (text file) notes on your computer. You ask, “Why would I need such an application?”.

fSekrit

I have found that as I continue to mature toward my demise, I have accumulated, over the course of my lifetime, an abundance of private and confidential information. Most of this information is in the form of numbers, passcodes, etc… For example; driver’s license number, car tag #, car access code, house access code, security alarm code, bank account number, work access codes, etc… I found that I needed something where I could safely store this information and this is where fSekrit came to the rescue. fSekrit is a very small application (less than 50K) that basically becomes an encrypted container that will securely store your notes.

Simply download the application and run  fSekrit and start typing your note. After you have completed entering your confidential information, click on “File”, select “Save As”, give the note a name, enter a passphrase, and you are done. Your note in essence becomes a secure self contained program that will require a password each time you open it. fSekrit uses very strong encryption to ensure that your data is never at risk.

Rather than using hocus-pocus home-brewed algorithms, fSekrit uses the standard, military grade, peer-reviewed AES/Rijndael in CBC mode, with a 256-bit keysize.

Another advantage of using fSekrit is that your un-encrypted data is never stored on your harddisk. With a traditional encryption utility you would have to decrypt your file to disk, view or edit it, and then re-encrypt it.

A Visual Directory of the Best Sites on the Internet

August 19, 2010

How would you like to have a visual directory of what is considered the best of the internet at your fingertips? You can with a Kadaza.

Kadaza

Kadaza appears to be a relatively new service that claims to show  the absolute best and most popular websites in many different and numerous categories. Kadaza is very easy to use and requires no account or login.  Everything is already setup and ready to go in a very appealing speed dial type interface.

Kadaza

All sites on Kadaza are human selected with great care and organized in the best possible way, making it easy to use, intuitive, and helpful for everyone. We use a strict site selection process where sites on Kadaza should represent original, unique and informational content that contributes something unique to a specific Kadaza category. In short, we only select the best and most popular sites in each category. But we also introduce new and exciting sites.

From my testing of Kadaza I am finding the more I use it, the more engaging and enticing it becomes. There are customization features available such as creating a background and customizing your own tiles.

Sample Background Image

Kadaza

Your customization settings are stored as a cookie on your computer. One of the cool features of Kadaza is that when you clean your cookies, the settings automatically will restore themselves. So, even of you delete your cookies, you won’t loose your preferences at the Kadaza homepage.

Overall, Kadaza is a keeper and would definitely fit in as your main homepage in your browser. I do like the fact you do not have to sign up for anything which ultimately makes Kadaza a privacy pleaser.

A Really Nice Hard-To-Find Screensaver Clock

August 16, 2010

One of my favorite screensavers, of all time, is called Text-Reader Clock. The Clock was originally developed, back in 2002 – 2003 and has been with me ever since. The problem is that the developer’s website of Text-Reader Clock is nowhere to be found these days; however, that did not stop me from finding a way to share this clock with you.

Text-Reader Clock

The reason I like this screensaver clock is that it is very stylish and realistic in appearance.  Even though it was originally developed to run on Windows 98, NT, Me, 2000, XP; it runs just fine on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Ok, now for the drum roll.  After much searching, The Text-Reader clock can be downloaded from cnet  [ HERE ] .

Typically, when it comes to screensavers; especially the ones I favor (like clocks), I usually make shortcuts to the file that launches the screensaver so that I can “manually” launch them.

New Site Added to Blogroll – Malware Removal Instructions

August 15, 2010

Just a quick note…  I recently completed a link exchange with a site that I would like to introduce called “Malware Removal Instructions” .

image
Your computer is infected with malicious software? Do you have popups on your PC? If so, search this blog for removal instructions or find computer threats by category.

Malware Removal Instructions has been added to the What’s On My PC blogroll (at the sidebar of the blog) for your future reference. If you have never experienced a malware infection, I strongly encourage you to visit this blog to get a “look see” of what the talk is all about.  You will be amazed how malware evolves, changes on a daily basis, damages your PC, and can literally convince you into handing over your money.
