The Facebook Addiction, Is it worth it?

October 15, 2010

I admit, I spend more time on the computer than the average person, but it is not on Facebook. There is just too much more to do other than to be consumed by the social antics of others and the raising of virtual animals and crops.

I had actually signed up for an account, early on, to explore the service and to share my blog articles, but it just did not connect with me. Please do not take offense, I’m just a computer guy that knows that there is a whole other world on the internet outside of Facebook and that a personal computer can do a whole lot more than raise virtual crops and animals at Farmville.

Facebook Addiction

I have come to the conclusion that most people now primarily use their computer, at home (and probably at work), to access Facebook so that they can communicate with their friends and become part of a real-world soap opera.

Some Facebook Facts
[Source: Facebook]

More than 500 million active users

50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day

Average user has 130 friends

People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook

There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)

Average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events

Average user creates 90 pieces of content each month

More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.

I suppose sharing updates of events occurring in one’s life is important in a close family circle; however, when that sharing extends out to a virtual reality group of “so called” friends that continue to populate your social connection then I can see where it can become an actual addiction and a unsafe one at that. Your privacy and even your safety can be compromised, as a result. The more information you put out there, the higher the risk and the more overwhelming it can become to manage that information. Just remember that Facebook is a cloud based service that is managed (and controlled) on the internet level.  Once you put it out there, it is out there and there is no taking it back.

Like in real life, those virtual friends can turn on you in a heartbeat or will use information you post to spread gossip. For example, I was at work and an employee approached me about another employee, who is in a position of responsibility, and stated, “you should see how they are dressed on Facebook”. In another instance, an employee who should have been working was Facebooking.  What they forgot was that one of their connected friends was the boss.

Another thing to really think about, is that the information you are posting is like pieces to a puzzle. With enough pieces (about you), a profile is developed that is used for advertising purposes. Think about it…  How do you think Facebook makes their money?  It is through advertising. The information you are putting out there is being collected, behind the scenes, in one form or another, for advertising purposes.

Then there are the scammers, the spammers and the the malware that makes its’ rounds on Facebook.  Remember, where the people gather, the cybercriminal will prey.

To me, it is not worth all this…

It is not that I am anti-social, it is that I am concerned; especially for the younger generation being exposed to this type of social networking. They are being lead to believe it is Ok to tell all, when in fact telling it all and exposing ones’ inner self may not be for the best.

Maybe I am missing something here. I would love to here your comments about Facebook, pros and cons…

Learn to Blog with Windows Live Writer 2011

October 15, 2010

If you are a blogger, it is important to have  installed a good client software platform to draft your blog articles so that the articles really stand out and look professional. The online editors provided by the blogging services such as  WordPress, Blogger, TypePad and LiveJournal are OK (in a pinch); however, they are no match when it comes to using blogging software that you install on your PC. In my humble opinion, the top dog out there in this category is Windows Live Writer (FREE from Microsoft). As a matter of fact, if my memory serves me, TechPaul at Tech-for Everyone put me onto Windows Live Writer, early on, when I became active in the blogging circuit. To put it simply, I would not blog without it.

Windows Live Writer

Most recently Microsoft released a more refined (and much improved) version of Windows Live Writer called Windows Live Writer 2011 which looks very similar to something you would see in the newer versions of Microsoft Office (ribbon toolbar interface and all).  In a nutshell Windows Live Writer 2011 is a full scale editor designed specifically for bloggers.

Ribbion Interface

To use Windows Live Writer, assuming you already have an account setup with one of the blogging services and your blog template is already setup online, you simply start by running the Windows Live Writer software. The first time you run it you will be prompted to add your blog account information such as username and password. After you have accomplished that small task, Windows Live Writer will automatically log into your online account and will identify and subsequently setup the editor to match your online web page template.

The whole purpose of Windows Live Writer 2011 is to give you the ability to draft your articles on your computer, then the ability to upload the drafts to your online account. There is so much more that you can do with Windows Live Writer compared to the online editors.  If you are a serious blogger, and want to make blogging a joyful experience, then this is one application that you must have.

A Solution to Finding the Perfect Domain Name

October 14, 2010

When starting a web site it is a real challenge to find the perfect domain name. Just when you have a brilliant idea to name your site, you are instantly disappointed that the name is already taken or is for sale by a third party. Oftentimes domain names are bought and sold, just like real estate. Early on, during the infancy of the internet, it was not uncommon for people buy up names then resell them at exorbitant prices. GoDaddy.com is the household name (most commonly used) when it comes to searching for, buying and maintaining domain names. For example, I recently purchased the domain name, bookmarks4techs.com, from GoDaddy, for another sideline site that I maintain.

If you are in the market for claiming your own domain name, you can use GoDaddy to search for names; however, there is a much better and refined way, called Tekiki, to brainstorm, search and nail down that perfect domain name.

Tekiki

What Tekiki does is help you brainstorm by using a concept (or general notion). For example, when I was searching for a name for my site, using GoDaddy, I basically when into a guessing mode to try and come up with an unique name. You have no idea how many times I would arrive at a name, to only find it had been taken. If I would have had Tekiki, I simply would have inputted my concept term, such as the word “Tech” into the tekiki search box. Of course tech.com is going to be shown as already being taken, but Tekiki pushes the envelope further by providing an option to search for alternative names. In the end, Tekiki will help put your mind in another dimension that will help you find that perfect domain name.

Type Faster With More Confidence

October 11, 2010

One of the hardest computer devices to master is the computer keyboard. Couple that with poor spelling skills and your experience using the computer becomes that much more frustrating.

If you fall into this category, then I recommend you take a look at the software program called  eType.

eType

eType is a FREE software application that autocompletes your words while you are typing, thus eliminating spelling errors. Now, the really cool part about eType is that it contains an online multi-language dictionary with translations and word substitutes to virtually any language in the world.

eType offers you translations to words in your native language so you can be sure you are choosing the right word at the right time. eType serves not only as a dictionary for individuals to utilize, but as a dictionary for everybody who uses eType to benefit from. Contributions are gathered from global users all over the world and are centralized in one common dictionary.

eType works with virtually every program on your computer, plus online apps (such as web based email, blogging, social sites etc.) where typing is required. As a matter of fact, I tested it and used eType as I composed this article. If eType does not activate in the app you are using, simply hit Ctrl-F8 on your keyboard to make eType work for you.

eType

eType automaticlly pops up a small window that supplies you with word suggestions, while you type, that will assist you with choosing the right word.

To see eType in action, I encourage you to preview the following video.

A FREE Google Chrome and Firefox Browser Weather Extension

October 9, 2010

Weather Watcher Live, a very popular weather software program, is available as a browser extension for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The good about this is that it is free and offers similar features that is available in the software version (that you pay for). I have been following Weather Watcher Live from its’ early development days (when it was free) and I can tell you the developer (Mike Singer) has put his heart and soul into the development cycle of this weather program.

Just like its’ software counterpart, the Weather Watcher Live browser extension can be configured to provide real-time weather conditions, for your area, from the NWS weather stations, real-time WeatherBug weather stations and weather stations in the WeatherBug backyard network.

Weather Watcher Live

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can click on tabs to get the current weather (Now), hourly forecast, daily forecast, maps and alerts. The map tab will redirect you to the WeatherBug website where a wide array of maps can be viewed.

Another feature that is worth noting is that you can view the current temperature and conditions from the browser toolbar (see below) by simply positioning your mouse pointer on the temperature icon.

Weather Watcher Live

If you are a Google Chrome browser user and you want a nice browser extension to keep track of the weather, then give Weather Watcher Live a try [ CLICK HERE ] .

For you Firefox users, you can get the Weather Watcher Live browser extension [ HERE ].
