Listen to Local Radio Stations on the Internet

November 15, 2010

There are numerous music and radio resources on the internet; however, few offer the ability to readily locate and provide radio or music stations that may be local to your region.

Radiotime changes all of that.  RadioTime is an online internet service that provides a complete radio and music experience. RadioTime provides option not only for internet radio, but option to find and locate radio stations that may be local to your region. I was quite impressed that many of the stations, that I typically listen to in my car, was easily found using RadioTime.

RadioTime

The radio guide includes all stations you hear on your car radio as well as Internet radio. Listeners can access their favorites through their PC and other connected devices including cell phones and home entertainment centers.

We offer free no-hassle registration so listeners can customize their radio experience for faster access each time they visit. Listeners can skip registration and enjoy all of the same benefits of listening to radio. They’ll just have to find their favorites on every visit.

No software installation is required to run RadioTime. Simply visit the RadioTime web site [ HERE ], select your radio or music preference, and click on listen. A window will open and your selection will begin playing. You can then minimize the window to your taskbar to continue listening to the music (or radio station) and to continue browsing the internet.  It does not get any simpler than this… As a matter of fact, the setup provided by RadioTime is the easiest internet radio site I have experienced.

A FREE Cloud App That Will Save You Money

November 14, 2010

Have you ever experienced the frustration of printing an article on a web page and ended up printing everything but the article? I feel your pain.  Been there (many times) and done it; and the end result was wasted paper and ink (and money).

To help overcome that frustration, save money and help save a few trees, I encourage you to take a look at the online (cloud app) service called “Print Friendly”. It is a FREE, user friendly service specifically engineered to help you print web pages.

Print Friendly

There are actually two methods to using Print Friendly, with the latter method described below, being the easiest and most efficient.

Method 1:  Whatever webpage you desire to print, copy the web address, go to the Print Friendly web site [ HERE ] and paste (or type) the site into the form box and hit print preview.

Method 2: At the Print Friendly web site [ HERE ] use your mouse to drag the Print Friendly bookmarklet to your browser’s bookmark toolbar. The beauty of this is that any web page you desire to print, simply visit the site where the article is located, then click on the Print Friendly bookmarklet on the toolbar. The web page will be magically converted, ready for printing, right before your eyes.

Using either method will activate the Print Friendly print preview.  At this point you can delete elements (paragraphs, images) prior to actually printing the selection. Other notable features, is that you can save the selection to a PDF file, email the selection or tweet the selection.

How To Burn A Recorded TV Show in Windows Media Center

November 11, 2010

Many people out there that have Windows Vista and Windows 7 based computers have never tapped into the Windows Media Center component that is right under their noses.

Windows Media Center

Windows Media Center is a software component that is included FREE in Windows 7 Home Premium, Ultimate, Professional, and Enterprise; and in Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. By using the Windows Media Center component, an inexprensive TV card (or TV adapter) and a broadband internet connection, you can turn your computer into a very powerful media center where you can watch regular TV, watch Internet TV (and online video), play music, play internet radio; AND, play (and manage) your personal video and photo collection.

Also included in Windows Media Center is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) where you can record your favorite TV shows (for later playback). The recordings are stored directly onto the hard drive of your computer where they can be managed and played directly from Windows Media Center.

imageA question that I recently was asked; “Can you burn (or save) the recorded TV shows to a DVD in Windows Media Player?”.  The answer is a straight out YES and the steps to perform this task is reflected below. If you never experienced Windows Media Center, you can read more about it [ HERE ] .

You can burn recorded TV shows or other video files that appear in your media library in Windows Media Center to a DVD that you can play in a DVD player or on your computer.

When you burn video files to a DVD, the files are converted so that you can play them in a standard DVD player. Burning a TV show to a DVD can take a longer amount of time—the time it takes to burn a TV show to a DVD depends on different factors: the length of the added video files, your computer system resources, and the speed of your DVD burner. – [Source: Microsoft]

  1. Start Windows Media Center. Insert a recordable DVD into your DVD burner.
  2. Click the Burn a CD or DVD notification that appears in Windows Media Center, or, on the start screen, scroll to Tasks, and then click burn cd/dvd
  3. On the Select Disc Format screen, click Video DVD, and then click Next
  4. Using the keyboard, type a name for your DVD, and then click Next
  5. On the Select Media screen, click Recorded TV or Video Library, and then click Next
  6. Click the TV show or video that you want to add to your disc, so that a check mark appears on the selected TV show or video file, and then click Next
  7. If you want to add more video files to the disc, on the Review & Edit List screen, click Add More
  8. Repeat steps 5-7 until you have added the recorded TV shows and videos to the disc that you want to burn.
  9. After you have added all the video files that you want to burn, on the Review & Edit List screen, click Burn DVD
  10. In the Initiating Copy notification, click Yes
  11. After the disc is burned, in the Completing Disc Creation notification, click Done

It All Began With An iPhone

November 9, 2010

To interject some humor in today’s post and give you an opportunity to learn about some of Apple’s product line; a friend recently sent me this dissertation about some of Apple’s products, that he had purchased, and how these products (in the end) got him into trouble.

In all seriousness, if you want to learn about the iPhone, iPad, iPodTouch, and the last product (which is a surprise), I encourage you click on the links below.

A FREE Screen Zoom and Annotation Tool

November 8, 2010

Windows 7 (and XP and Vista) has a display utility available, called ‘Magnifier’, that you can use to make the screen more readable. I recently needed such an utility to zoom in on my HTPC (Home Theater PC) screen when browsing the internet. You can get to this utility from the Start Menu (Start>Accessories>Ease of Access) or by typing “magnify” in the “Run” box on the Start Menu or by hitting the “win+plus button” on your keyboard. You have option of various zoom levels available and you can perform a full screen zoom, a region (or lens) zoom or a docked zoom.

Windows Magnifier

The Windows version of the zoom tool is nice; however, my preference for the Home Theater setup is a portable app called ZoomIt.

ZoomIt is screen zoom and annotation tool for technical presentations that include application demonstrations. ZoomIt runs unobtrusively in the tray and activates with customizable hotkeys to zoom in on an area of the screen, move around while zoomed, and draw on the zoomed image. I wrote ZoomIt to fit my specific needs and use it in all my presentations.

ZoomIt works on all versions of Windows and you can use pen input for ZoomIt drawing on tablet PCs.

ZoomIt

The feature I like the most about ZoomIt is the customizable hot keys. In my Home Theater setup where you need to quickly enlarge the screen, you can zoom in and zoom out, by hitting a few keys on the keyboard. I especially like the ‘LiveZoom’ feature where the screen can be magnified and the screen will move with the mouse. ZoomIt is a great visual aid and enhancement tool for computer users.

FREE Animated Clock with Weather Like on HTC Phones

November 7, 2010

If you are a regular visitor of the blog, then you know that I am a lover of clock software. Today I bring to you a new clock app that I recently found that is unlike any other. It is called HTC Home. HTC Home is a a nice animated flip style clock with weather, that displays on your Windows Desktop. This clock is like the clock that is popular on HTC phones. As a matter of fact, I rate it as the top clock in my collection, at this time.

HTC Home Clock

Depending if you go with version 1.1 of HTC Home or the beta 1 of version 2, you will find features such as weather and clock animations, wallpaper background changing, a location chooser for the weather and an option to install directly from the internet or download as a portable app. My suggestion is to go with version 1.1 of HTC Home until the bugs are ironed out of version 2.  As a matter of fact, in my testing, version 1.1 actually has more features.

To give you an idea how HTC Home works, I encourage you to preview the video below.
