Get The Real Scoop On Printer Ink Cartridges

January 14, 2011

I do not think I have to tell you that printer ink cartridges are expensive and that you have options out there to “supposedly” save you money; such as, refilling the cartridge (with a kit), buying recycled cartridges or buying generic brand cartridges.  But, are you really saving money by using any of these options?

Ink. Nozzles. Cartridges

If you want the real scoop on printer cartridges and whether the alternatives out there (as I have indicated) are worth your time and money, then you need to read “Ink. Nozzles. Cartridges” .

This article, “Ink. Nozzles. Cartridges” is from a tech that I have great respect for and I totally agree with his analogy and advice on this subject. You do not see many techs write about printer issues, including  myself, due to the fact we despise printers. They can be hard to troubleshoot, hard to work on and just knowing you get the printer at a cheap price and pay big time in the long haul for ink is a big turn off in my book.

I would like to hear your input on printers and whether or not cartridge refill kits, recycled cartridges or generic cartridges are worth it or not???

FREE On-Demand Music, Internet Radio and MORE!

January 14, 2011

MuziicTake the music world of YouTube and optimize access to that music world using an innovative and user-friendly interface and you have Muziic. This is exactly what a father and son team developed that has not only created a flurry of controversy, but has literally opened up an entire world of music, from top artist, that can be streamed across the internet to your PC (or mobile device). The father and son team describe Muziic as the world’s first YouTube-compliant music video service based on YouTube’s open API.  Muziic launched February 25th, 2009

Muziic is a true multi-platform service that allows you to stream virtually any song or music video on-demand, build custom playlists, tune-in to thousands of internet radio stations and browse high quality music content – anytime, anywhere.

By signing up (for FREE) to Muziic you have option of using their web based web player or you can download the desktop player. In my case, I simply use the web interface.

With Muziic you can load, customize and save playlists that you can revisit anytime from anywhere. You have access to song lyrics, music videos, internet radio stations, albums, artists, and can even do some karaoke.

The really, really cool part of Muziic is the DJ (music deck) interface [HERE] ; that, in my opinion provides the ultimate cloud based music player experience.

Humor: My Blackberry Is Not Working

January 10, 2011

What good is a tech blog without some humor mixed in. A relative of mine sent me this video, titled “My Blackberry Is Not Working”.  I figured, since I have done some articles on the Blackberry, plus I am the owner of one of these devices; this video may be helpful to others when their Blackberry is not working.

For the rest of you, if you do not know what a Blackberry is:

BlackBerry is a line of mobile e-mail and smartphone devices developed and designed by Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) since 1999.[2]

BlackBerry functions as a personal digital assistant with address book, calendar, memopad and task list capabilities. It also functions as a portable media playerwith support for music and video playback and camera and video capabilities. BlackBerry is primarily known for its ability to send and receive (push) Internet e-mail wherever mobile network service coverage is present, or through Wi-Fi connectivity. –

NEW: Play Up to 1GB Video Files in Google Docs

January 9, 2011

As Google continues to push forward toward the GoogleOS , they have recently formulated a method to watch videos that you upload and store in your Google Docs account. Simply upload your video to your account, click on the filename in your document’s list and a player (supported by Google / YouTube) will begin playing the video in a separate window. You must have Flash installed for the video player to work.

Google Docs Video Player

This added feature would be useful to store small video clips. Keep in mind when using this feature, that video files can consume space, so if you are using a FREE Google Docs account, which most of us poor people are, then be careful in that you do not push the space allocation limits on your account (unless you purchase more space).

Just like any other file in Google Docs, once you upload the video clip, you can then share it with others.  To read more about this NEW featured [ CLICK HERE ]

The Google Docs Video Player will play the most commonly used video formats:

  • WebM files (Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codec)
  • .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files – (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs and AAC audio codec)
  • .AVI (many cameras use this format – typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM)
  • .MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio)
  • .WMV
  • .FLV (Adobe – FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio)

Since Google uses YouTube’s player, it’s obvious that these are the formats supported by YouTube. After uploading a video to Google Docs, you’ll have to wait until it’s processed.

Why would someone upload videos to Google Docs instead of using YouTube? When Google adds more free storage to Google Docs and makes it easy to sync all your files, you’ll upload documents, photos, music files and videos. Google Docs lets you organize files into folders, share multiple files with your friends and even keep old versions of your files.

FREE Software to Organize and Cheer Up Your Desktop

January 8, 2011

The computer desktop, the main graphical user interface that we see when we start our PC’s… The desktop is harbor for icons, windows, toolbars, folders, files, wallpapers and the occasional widget. I have found that many people keep numerous icons on their desktops as a convenient launching point for their favorite programs. Personally I like to keep my desktop completely clean (no icons).

If you are a desktop junkie, currently with 15 or more icons on your desktop, and you want to add some pizazz to your desktop, then take a look at MyCoolDeskTop. As I mentioned, I maintain a clean desktop interface; however, I ran across MyCoolDeskTop, installed it, loaded my desktop up with icons, tested it and found it does work; therefore, I thought let me put it out there for somebody’s use.  My conclusion on this was, use a small icon setting and you should have more than 15 icons on your desktop in order to get the full effect of the shapes.

MyCoolDesktop

What is cool about this FREE application is that it will automatically take your icons and arrange them in many different shapes and styles.  As a matter of fact you can select from 27 different shapes in 5 categories with the ability to save and restore your selected layouts at the click of the mouse.

MyCoolDesktop

My Cool Desktop key features :

  • 27 different shapes grouped in 5 categories
  • save and restore multiple desktop layouts, save and load with 1-click

Full control of your desktop layout :

  • set height and width of selected shape
  • set space between desktop icons
  • move your icons layout anywhere on the screen – includes auto-centering
  • increase/decrease the size of your shape
  • minimization to system tray
  • opening on system Start Up (starts with Windows)

Important: You have to Disable Align to Grid and Auto arrange for Desktop icons in order to let My Cool Desktop control your desktop items position :

For Windows XP users: Right click on Desktop, select Arrange by and uncheck Align to Grid and Auto arrange, if they are checked

For Windows Vista/7 users: Right click on Desktop, select View and uncheck Align to Grid and Auto arrange, if they are checked

System requirements

IMPORTANT: At least 15 icons on desktop required, more than 25 recommended

Windows 2000/ME/XP/Vista or 7 operating systems

400 Mhz processor

64 MB of RAM

5 MB of Disk Space

1024 X 768 or higher resolution

Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows XP, Vista and 7

January 7, 2011

Keyboard ShortcutsFollowing a recent post, I had a reader ask if I could provide some resources on where to find and how to use keyboard shortcuts. Ironically, following that comment, Steve over at Scoroncocolo had posted a very thorough article about Windows 7 Keyboard Shortcuts.  If your operating system is Windows 7, then you need to take a look at some of the cool shortcuts that Steve will show you [ HERE ] .

Keyboard shortcuts are combinations of two or more keys that, when pressed, can be used to perform a task that would typically require a mouse or other pointing device. Keyboard shortcuts can make it easier to interact with your computer, saving you time and effort as you work with Windows and other programs.

Granted, you may not have yet graduated to Windows 7 and may still be using Windows Vista or XP.  For your convenience, I have listed some great resources on the keyboard shortcuts that are available to each operating system. My favorite keyboard shortcut is “F1” .  You can press that key in nearly any application you are using and get an education.  What is your favorite keyboard shortcut?
