Make Your Photos and Videos Automatically Fly From Your Camera to Your Computer

I spend much of my obsession for technology, by looking for the latest technology in computers and computer accessories on Amazon. It is such a vast resource that you can literally spend hours upon hours browsing their site.

Today, I came across a technology that I did not know about that is just downright impressive. I am sure many of you out there have digital cameras that use the SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity Cards) in your camera. Typically, after you take your pictures you manually have to transfer the pictures to your computer by either connecting the camera to the computer or by removing the SDHC card from the camera and copying the pictures to the computer.

Well, appears there is a new technology available that allows you to wirelessly (and automatically) transfer or upload JPEG photos & videos fast through your home Wi-Fi network thanks to built in 802.11n speed. You are probably asking, how does this work, my camera does not have wireless (wi-fi) built into the camera???

How this does work is that you can purchase an SDHC card (reasonably priced in my opinion) that has a wireless transmitter built into the SDHC memory card. It is called, Eye-Fi Connect X2. Appears that the cards are available in a 4GB and 8GB’s.

Interesting post, I wonder if it supports linux. I don’t start my windows partition anymore, and as much as this sounds good to me. I don’t want to use the bloated mass of vista to take advantage of it.

You might find my blog interesting based upon this post. I talk about everyday computing problems, and finding fixes. If you interested at all with linux its a great place to get advice, and I love to answer questions.

    Rick,
    Thank you for the mention.

.. you know, the idea that they can make a Wi Fi transmitter that small now (so small it fits in an SD chip???!!) .. well, that may not be such “kewel” thing in the long run.
Kind of scares me, in a way..

    Rick,
Yes, the Eye-Fi card is fabulous. It was actually one of my ‘treats’ in my tech bag in my ‘No Tricks, Just Treats’ presentation for the Discovery Educator Network Fall Virtual Conference this past Saturday.

I can sure use this. After reading this article then only I realized that my SDHC is still storing all the photos taken since I got my digital camera about a year ago… I was just too lazy to upload the photos into my PC. Am definitely going to get the eye-fi card.

  7. Wow, this new technology seems amazing! Uploading pictures from your camera can be annoying, especially if you have a slow PC. Good call about putting it on your Christmas list- I bet you won’t be the only one. In the future, do you think this wireless transfer feature will be standard in all cameras?

      Alexandra,

Good point and I bet you will be right on that. Let’s you and me make a prediction here and say “this wireless transfer feature will be come a standard feature”…. If you can think of it, someone has done it (or will do it).

      Thanks for commenting…

      Rick

Tobias, Eye-Fi doesn’t have Linux software, but if you search for Eye-Fi Linux, you will find linux software written by other developers.
