An Advanced Online Image Editor That Is Easy

February 27, 2012

Just like the online file converters I recently featured, online image editors are everywhere, which makes it hard to decide which one to go with. Factor in that the learning curve to master an image editor is quite challenging that makes most people avoid them.  Well don’t…

Today, I want to show you an online image editor, called Fotoflexer, that to me is advanced (rich in features), but very easy (and fun) to use.

Fotoflexer

For an online editor, Fotoflexer has all of the bases covered. You can do everything from fixing your photo or image to adding effects, fonts, shapes, etc… You can even get crazy with Fotoflexer by applying morphing, distortion and doodling effects.

Fotoflexer

The best way to get a handle on using Fotoflexer is to visit the website and either upload a test photo or use a photo they provide.  A really cool feature (that I like) is that I can either save my finished product to my computer or I can save it to an online photo storage and sharing service (such as Picasa, Photobucket, MySpace, and others).  In my case, I use Picasa. To take advantage of the his feature, you must sign up for an account with Fotoflexer (which is FREE).

After using Fotoflexer, I can honestly say that for an online photo and image editing program, this one is a keeper.  Fotoflexer can do it all and most importantly, it is easy to use and understand.

Log Into Your Box Account From Your Android Device and Get 50 GBs of FREE Online Storage

February 24, 2012

Box is an online file storage service that typically gives you for FREE, 5 GBs of online file storage. The 5 GB limit is the typical amount you see for most services in an effort to get you to try the service; HOWEVER, Box has an interesting offer that is hard to refuse (providing you have an Android device such as a smartphone or tablet). Now through March 23, 2012 if you download Box for Android  and log into you’re your Box account from an Android device, your account will automatically be upgraded to 50 GBs.

In addition to getting a storage bump, your file upload limit will jump, too;  you’ll be able to upload files up to 100MB  – like photos, presentations and documents – in your Box account for easy, quick access from anywhere.

Box for Android

If you currently do not have a Box account, simply go to the Box website and sign up for the FREE 5 GB account, then download and install Box for Android (from HERE). Sign into the account from your Android device and voila’, the 5 GBs magically turns into 50 GBs.

The only negative thing I could find with Box is that they do not offer (for FREE), a Windows desktop syncing application; otherwise, Box is one phenomenal online storage service.  The more I use it, whether it is from my Windows desktop or from my Android Device, the more I am leaning toward making it my primary online storage service.

I think the feature I like the most about Box is the file preview feature. For example, if I have a MS-Word file stored in Box, I can get a nice clean preview of the document in its’ native format; which in most cases for me, is all I need.  There are also editing options available for many file types.

Features:

Store all kinds of files online, then arrange them into folders just like on your desktop. Box provides anytime, anywhere access to your files from any device – whether you’re in Nebraska or Norway. Throwing thumb drives in your bag, transferring files to CDs, stressing about a stolen laptop – that’s yesterday. Today, everything’s on Box.

Send a LinkPaste it into an email or an instant message, even send directly from Box.

Share a Whole Folder of FilesCreate a new folder, upload files, then invite others to join.

Receive Real-Time UpdatesSo you always know when someone’s viewed, edited or commented on your file.

Invite Others to Share and EditTurn folders into shared online workspaces, where all your files are in one place and anyone you invite can view, edit and upload files – even add more content.

Post Comments and DiscussionsWhether it’s a quick comment or an in-depth discussion, keep the whole team on track by exchanging feedback in one place.

Get Real-Time UpdatesWith Box’s real-time updates and email notifications, you always know when teammates add, edit or comment on shared files.

A FREE Online PDF to Word Conversion Service

February 23, 2012

Yesterday’s post featured a FREE PDF to Excel Conversion Service that led me to look for (and find) a FREE PDF to Word Conversion Service (called Free PDF to Word Online).

PDF to Word

I don’t know if you are like me, but I find myself using Microsoft Word a lot more than Excel (but, that’s just me) and the majority of PDF files you are going to come across are text based documents.

The beauty of this online converter is that once the conversion is completed, you can fully edit the document in Microsoft Word. During the conversion process you are given option of converting the PDF file to a docx file (as typically seen as the default in MS-Word 2010), a doc file (as typcially seen as the default in MS-Word 2003) and a rtf file (rich text format).

You are limited to uploading a 10 MB PDF file with this service and there is an option for uploading the PDF directly from a website source. Following the upload of your PDF file, you can either wait for a download link to appear OR if you do not want to wait, just leave your email address and you will receive an email when the file is ready for download.

Nice service with excellent output results; however, the file upload size could be a little more heftier.

A FREE Online PDF to Excel Conversion Service

February 22, 2012

A reader of the blog recently contacted me and pointed me to an online PDF to Excel Conversion Service that is quite nice. What is unique here is that we typically see converters that specialize in moving (or converting) documents to the PDF format; not the other way around. I checked out this service and found that PDF files where tables were embedded converted nicely and represented both the row and column structure (as seen in Excel). Once the table is in the Excel format you can then implement your formulas and calculations as you would in an Excel spreadsheet.

PDF to EXCEL

According to the privacy policy of this service, any files you upload to be converted are deleted automatically following the conversion AND the converted file remains on the server for a period of 24 hours to give you enough time to download it. There is a 30 MB limitation on the file you desire to upload and convert.

Save A File As A PDF File In Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010

February 21, 2012

Years ago when I was working as a Computer Information Specialist, where you had to be the “jack of all trades and master of none” , I was often called upon to find ways to convert Microsoft Office files to the Adobe PDF file format. I often had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it done. Today, that has all changed… There are PDF converters everywhere; AND, to make it even easier the newer generations of Microsoft Office (2007 and 2010) now have an option available where you can save an Office file as a PDF file. To no surprise (to me), most people using Office 2007 and 2010 are unaware of the PDF “save as” option and end up expending a lot of their time looking for solution.

image

The PDF file format is an excellent way to share a file and retain the original format that deters others from making changes to the content of the file. The PDF file format has been around for many years and is widely accepted (as a standard) worldwide with many agencies and organizations. Numerous viewers are available that make it possible for anyone to view a PDF file.

To save a file in Microsoft Office 2007 (to include, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, Visio and Word) you generally can get to the PDF option by clicking on the Microsoft Office button, point to the arrow next to Save As, and then click PDF.  You will have to give the file a name.  Depending on what Microsoft product you are using, the Office button may not be an available feature. Typically in that case go to the File Menu to perform a similar action as already described. Best way to learn, with whatever Microsoft product you use, is just do it and you will (learn) and will find the option I am referring to.  If you are totally lost, [click here] for more detailed instructions.

To save a file in Microsoft Office 2010 (to include, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, Project, Visio and Word) you generally can get to the PDF option by clicking on the File Tab, click Save As, and in the Save as type list, click PDF (*.pdf). Again, you will have to give the file a name.  If you need further instruction (with more detail), [click here].

Please keep in mind that when you save a file in Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010, using the PDF format, you will not be able reopen that file in Microsoft Office to edit the file. Typically, what I do first is save the file as a native Microsoft file (as the original working document). Then if I want to distribute the file as a PDF, I will bring up the original and save it to the PDF format.  In the end, I have my original version of the document (which I can edit) and the PDF version of the document (which cannot be edited).
