Explore Your Android Device With ES File Explorer

March 30, 2012

Exploring or navigating the file (and folder) structure on an Android device can be quite challenging depending on the device. For example I currently have three devices (Toshiba Thrive Tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet and a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Smartphone) in my household that are Android OS driven; and all three are limited or have minimal interface to the file structure.

Being the geekster that I am, a good file manager is a must in order to adequately manage the files on the computer or any device where file management is possible. For Android, the topper in the file management category in my book is ES File Explorer.

ES File Explorer

ES File Explorer, hands down, is the best out there…  For me, the power in this file manager is that, not only can you browse the file structure on the device, you can also connect and perform file operations on your computer network (via file shares) and in the cloud (with Box, SugarSync and Dropbox).  FTP and Bluetooth file transfer capabilities are also built in…  For example through ES File Explorer I can connect to my 50 GB Box.com account on the internet and perform file management operations (such as cut, copy, paste, etc.), as if they are local on the device.

Another feature, I really like, is that with a horizontal swipe of the finger, I can toggle between the local file structure screen, to the LAN screen (local area network screen), to the Cloud network screen, and to the FTP screen.

ES File Explorer

I am telling you, I would be lost without this app (which is FREE) on my Android devices (especially the Kindle Fire). ES File Explorer is available for download onto your Android devices (for FREE) through Google Play (formerly called the Android Market.

Latest Features List :

* File Manager — Operate files(Copy, Paste, Cut/Move, Create, Delete and Rename, Share/Send) in the phone and computers

* Multiselect files

* Application manager — Manage apps(Install, Uninstall, Backup, Shortcuts, Category)

* Compress and Decompress ZIP files, Unpack RAR files, can create encrypted (AES 256 bit) ZIP files

* View Different file formats, photos, docs, videos anywhere, support third party applications such as Document To Go to open document files

* Thumbnails for APK,images, and with an inbuilt image browser

* Text viewers and editors

* Search files

* Access your Home PC, via WIFI with SMB

* FTP, it’s your FTP client, manage the files on the FTP server as the ones on the sd card

* Dropbox,Box.net, Sugarsync, it’s an enhanced cloud storage client other than the official version. It can save photos and videos to your net drive and share your photos and docs, easily edit docs in your account.

* Bluetooth file transfer tool. You can copy and paste files between bluetooth ready devices.It supports OBEX FTP for browsing devices and transfering files between Bluetooth devices.

* Kill tasks, with a one click, pretty simple widget for auto kill, with ignore list to ignore some applications you don’t want to kill. It is an advanced task killer to kill running applications and clean memory(This feature needs ES Task Manager module installed)

* Shortcuts, bookmark manager (This feature needs ES Bookmark Manager module installed)

* Root explorer feature. It is the ultimate file management tools for root users. You might access the whole file system and data directories, and change permissions.

* Developers can visit our website for the developer interface for picking files from your applications, email attachments, etc.

* And much more.

Automatically Get the Mouse Cursor Out Of The Way

March 29, 2012

You probably noticed that the past several days I have not posted much. This is due that I have been using my writing skills on another personal matter that has consumed, not only my time, but what brain cells I have left.

During the course of this personal writing venture, there were quite a few occasions where I had to swat the mouse pointer out of my view so that it would not distract me or change my focus. Afterwards, I started to wonder if there was an utility out there that would move the pointer out of the way for me (automatically)? In other words, I was looking for something that when I started to type, the cursor would move out of view and park itself.

Sure enough, I soon found my answer with Park Cursor Aside

image

Whenever you type on keyboard, the mouse cursor is automatically parked (moved) aside to a defined screen / active window position. This way your view of the input field is not blocked by the mouse cursor.

Right click on tray icon and select Settings, to define the parking position and other values.

Close All Running Applications With Just A Single Click

March 27, 2012

You talk about point and click…  Here is a small software utility (called Close All Windows) that gives you the ability to close all running applications with a single click. No installation is required. Simply download Close All Windows, extract the file and create a shortcut to the file on your desktop; or, if you have Windows 7, pin the shortcut to your taskbar. You can even tell Close All Windows to exclude certain windows that you do not want closed. If you are like me and end up with many applications open at the same time, this utility makes it easy to bring down the house and close all of those windows at once.

A Tech Support Care Package For Parents

March 22, 2012

Helping our parents or older friends break through that barrier that they think they are dumb about technology can be a tough call; when in fact they are on the same level as everyone else.  Yes, the new generation coming up is being exposed to technology like never before but that does not make them any smarter. In fact, as we progress in this age of digital technology, we are actually dumbing ourselves and our kids down to the point that someday our dependence on technology will become so strong that if it suddenly all turned “off”, we will be like zombies.

Ok, enough of Ramblin’ Rick’s theory on the digital technology age…  Today I wandered onto a site, brought to you by Google, called “Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package” that may be helpful in getting your parents (or older friends) to break through that fear barrier of using their computers.

Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package

Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package is at a very basic level and does not contain everything you need to know, but there are some interesting video tutorials that are quite good.  You will find four categories that offer an array of videos:

THE BASICS
WORLD WIDE WEB
COMMUNICATION
MEDIA
FINDING INFORMATION

What you do is fill out the form on the site, select your category and topic, choose some choice words, and send the tutorial instruction to Mom and Dad.
