Are we endorsing the legitimacy of pornography by providing the industry their own “red light district” (top level domain) on the internet? Will this make pornography more prevalent online? Will this lead to online regulation of pornography?

On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet’s naming system, voted to allow the application of the controversial “.xxx” top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.

The domain, which would need further approval before going live on the internet, would be applied to adult entertainment sites just as “.com” is now.   (more…)

A Very Cool Web App to Search for Flickr Photos

One of the functions that I serve in my Church is that of the Multimedia Director, with the primary responsibility of preparing and building hymn and sermon slides that provide a visual experience to the congregation. The toughest part of the building process, which often consists of 50 or more slides, is locating resources for graphics, photos, and backgrounds that will coincide with a particular hymn or sermon message.

Today I hit a goldmine of a site (that will assist me with locating graphic content) that is not only visually appealing, but is (in my opinion) one of the coolest flash web sites out there.  It is called Tag Galaxy…

Tag Galaxy is an Adobe Flash based (3D) – 3 Dimensional web site that allows you search Flickr (online photo management and sharing website) for graphic content.

Here’s how it works…  Visit Tag Galaxy [ Here ] .  Enter the type of graphic you are looking for (where it says “enter initial tag”) and click on “Go”.  For example, I entered in the word “Praise”.  The site will magically evolve into a galaxy of other relevant tags (or planets).

In my case I clicked on the “Praise” planet and the site again evolves into a sphere (or globe) that is composed of the photos it finds on Flickr.  You can rotate the sphere (or globe) by holding down your left mouse button and using your mouse pointer.  You can select individual photos on the sphere (or globe) by clicking on them with your mouse pointer or you can reload the sphere (or globe) with more photos by clicking on the arrows at the top of the page.  Using your scroll wheel on your mouse you can zoom in and out on the sphere.

A Smartbook (computer) for less than $100

I was just over at Bill Mullins’ Weblog – Tech Thoughts to look over what he had posted this past week and noticed under the article Tech Thoughts Daily Net News – March 4, 2010 a news alert item titled

Would you buy Coby’s 7-inch smartbook for $85?

I did some backtracking of the links and discovered (see below Web Clip) that this smartbook (for internet access or cloud computing) is a for real deal and apparently will not to be available in the U.S., until this spring (which is right around the corner – I Think : )  You can preview a video description of the Coby Smartbook at engadget by clicking any of the links below.

Coby $85 smartbook
feels like a hundred bucks (hands-on)

Funny how our tune on smartbooks totally changes when one’s got an $85 price tag. We happened upon Coby’s booth at CeBIT this morning and of all the fairly cheap feeling laptops the company had on display it was its 7-inch NBPC722 smartbook that cozied right up to us. Okay, so it isn’t as thin or attractive as the $499 Lenovo’s Skylight, but again let us remind you that it costs about as much as a couple of new printer ink cartridges. Inside the little guy packs a 624MHz Marvell PXA303 processor, 2GB of flash storage and runs Windows CE which all should be good enough for some light Web browsing and e-mail writing.

Finally, the FCC has had it with “small ball”—and the agency is at last detailing some big-picture aspirational goals for US broadband. By 2020, the National Broadband Plan calls for 100 million homes to have 100Mbps Internet access, and the US should have the world’s largest “ultra-high-speed broadband testbeds.” In addition, Internet adoption rates should hit at least 90 percent—way up from the current 65 percent.   read more…
