Portable Apps

I think one of the greatest innovations in computer technology was the implementation of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard which interfaces devices on your computer. One such device commonly used with this interface is the USB flash drive. It absolutely fascinates me that you can read / write data to these drives AND there are no moving parts. This technology replaced the floppy drive because of the large storage capacities (in the gigabytes). These drives are available everywhere, in various size capacities, and are the common means to store and transport data between computers. As the flash drive technology developed, software authors commenced engineering software applications, known as portable apps, to run from these devices. This “What’s On My PC” page is devoted to the portable apps that I use on my flash drive.  Everything I have listed is freely available on the internet.

One way to make you USB even more useful is to make it your own portable PC! After searching forever to find portable programs, I stumbled upon Prayaya V3. I know its not free, but its completely worth it! I tried this program out after learning about MojoPac and I have to say that it is way better. I think that it is faster and you can do a lot more with it, especially because it is not limited to just Windows XP. It can run on XP/Vista/7 flawlessly. Because I travel a lot, I am constantly on the go and because pretty much every place that I’ve been uses Windows, I am always concerned about security, especially because I usually cant restart public computers and boot my own Linux distro. With Prayaya, this eliminates most of the problems. Not only is it secure, its super easy.

Check it out at http://en.prayaya.com/index.html and let me know what you think.

I am looking for a portable app that can rotate videos. I’ve gotten several videos that were shot on personal cameras that need rotated. There are a lot of people whom just don’t understand that when you turn a video camera sideways that it makes the video sideways as well! UGH!

    • Ramblinrick says:

      Midmented,

Give this a shot: X2X Video Flip and Rotate … This will take you to pendriveapps.com. The author’s site of X2X Video Flip, I am receiving a WOT (web of trust) warning; however, I am seeing this software reviewed at various sites. X2X can be made portable as indicated on the pendriveapps.com site.

  7. Probably my favourite portable app is Google Chrome. Most people don’t want to use Internet Explorer so it’s nice to just have Chrome as a portable exe on my USB drive so I can run it wherever I go :)
