FREE Fax Service For Occasional Use

March 26, 2013

If you are like me, it is far and few between the instances where I need to send a fax (facsimile). On two occasions in the past month I needed to send a fax. Having no actual fax machine to do this, I started exploring some of the online (internet based) faxing options. What I settled with that worked very nicely, on both of those occasions, was an online faxing service called MyFax.

MyFax

MyFax® is an award winning and the fastest growing Internet fax service used by individuals, small, medium, and large businesses to send and receive faxes through email.

MyFax is actually a paid service; HOWEVER, they do offer a FREE option for sending those occasional faxes. Any actual person may use the Site to send up to two (2) free faxes per day, each fax not to exceed nine (9) pages in length (plus the cover page.) and not to exceed 10MBs in size.

To send a FREE fax, meeting the criteria as indicated above, go to this page [HERE] and complete the online form to show the recipient of the fax, who it is from, and a text message for the cover sheet.  After completing these entries, upload the documents you desire to fax. In my case, my documents were in a PDF format. It appears that MyFax will also recognize doc files also (and others, but I could not find what the other file formats were).

In the end, using MyFax, I can attest on the two occasions I used it, sending five pages, it worked quickly and without error. I received an email to indicate the status of the fax (that it was successfully sent).

Is The Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet Computer Going To Hold Up To The Competition?

February 27, 2013

The best description I can give for Microsoft Surface Pro is that it is a laptop in tablet form. It will run the same programs that you have been running with Windows 7; BUT, will this be enough to standup to the competition (the Android Tablets and iPad)?

Microsoft Surface Pro

I am a Windows user, always have been, but there is two things that is holding me back from the Surface Pro, and has me questioning Microsoft’s strategy:

  1. The price of $899+ is too salty for my pocketbook. For 899+ I can get a pretty decent Ultrabook with a touch screen. Granted the Surface Pro is comparable to the full Windows desktop and notebook computer experience that I have always been used to; however, after personally using and experiencing the simplicity of the Android Tablet (at a much lesser price), and the iPad, I cannot see existing home based computer users or the new generation of users (our kids and grandkids) going for Microsoft’s flavor of the tablet (Pro or RT Models).

For example, I have two elderly friends of mine, one owning an Android Tablet and the other owning an iPad. Both have expressed how easy it was for them to use these devices in comparison to their Windows based computers. As a matter of fact, they are spending less time at the keyboard.

  2. The Surface Pro (best model) ships with a 128 GB of space and from what I am reading this space can drop dramatically to around 89 GBs with Windows 8, Microsoft Office and the built in Windows apps installed (click here). Also, I have noticed that many of the Windows Store apps can be quite large in file or install size compared to the typical apps installed on the Android OS and iOS (iPad) platforms.

I don’t want to sound too negative about Microsoft Surface, because I am a true Windows based user who has lived in the operating system for years; BUT, that has been my passion, my hobby, my life blood… Most people I know could care less about computers or Microsoft Windows. All they want is an easy computer (internet) experience and they want it at a reasonable cost; whether it is Android, iOS (iPad) or Microsoft. In other words, I am starting to realize that the writing may be on the wall and that myself, desktop computing and Microsoft is becoming old school pretty fast.

I would love to hear insight on this from the experts in the field and from the everyday computer user at home.  (see a related article here, called Rethinking Tablets, at TTC Shelbyville - a Tennessee Tech School).

Two Options to Boot Windows 8 To The Desktop

December 3, 2012

Typically when you boot Windows 8 you will land either on the Lock (or Login) Screen or the Start Screen; depending on how you have Windows 8 configured. To get to the desktop, you have to click on the Desktop tile on the Windows 8 Start Screen. This change has really thrown a lot of folks off of their game.

Windows 8

There are couple of ways to fix this so that you will land on your desktop, instead of landing on the Start Screen. One option is to download (and buy) Start8 by Stardock. The advantages of this option is that there is a configuration setting in Start8 that will allow you to boot to the desktop; PLUS, Start8 creates a Start Menu (which is a missing component in Windows 8). So this option is really a win-win option, all the way around. There are many other third party options out there, but I lay my trust in Stardock’s reputation.

The other option that I came across is by WinAero. This option is a more techie type option that requires a little work on your part; however, this option does not require you to install any third party software. It modifies system policy and allows to Explorer to read the registry key which controls Metro behavior. If you think you may be interested in this option, [click here]. WinAero also has some other Windows 8 utilities that you may be interested in, as well.

In summary, I am thinking that Microsoft will eventually get this right by giving us an option to restore the Start menu and by giving us an option to boot to the desktop. Microsoft reminds me of many of the smart (intelligent) people I know. They are smart, but they lack common sense.

A Program To Create and Customize Your Own Windows 8 Start Screen Tiles

November 30, 2012

One of the downfalls to Windows 8, especially from the Start Screen level, is the ability to create your own tiles. You will find that when you install a Windows 8 app, the tile is automatically created for you has that metro look; whereas, if you create a tile from a normal Windows program, the tile that is generated is nothing close to being metro in appearance. As a matter of fact, if you pin a normal Windows program to the Start Screen, Windows 8 will create the tile using the built in icon of the program (which I have found in most cases to be not attractive at all).

Solution to this problem is an up and coming program that is in the early beta stages of development, called OblyTile.

  OblyTile

OblyTile, is sort of a techie type of a program, where you need to have a good understanding of file and folder paths; however, I think once you get a handle on this program you will find it to be just what the doctor ordered. On top of it all, it is a portable app.

The cool thing about OblyTile is that you can use your own images and icons to create your own tiles using a selectable background color. OblyTile also has a built in quick list of programs and icons already built-in. For example, OblyTile gives you the ability to create a shutdown tile, a task manager tile, a control manager tile, etc…

To give you an example of some tiles I created, reflected is a partial screenshot of my Windows 8 Start Screen. If you notice, one of the tiles is a tile that will launch me directly to What’s On My PC…  In a since OblyTile makes your Start Screen become a Windows 8 program launcher.

Again, I emphasize this program is in beta; however, I can see OblyTile becoming a mainstay, highly sought after, program.
