Using Google Search As A Calculator

April 26, 2013

There are many instances what I write about here on the blog is from personal experience. Today, at my retirement job, we had to complete a purchase order in quick fashion and I needed to perform some math calculations to determine costs. Instead of pulling out a calculator I pulled up the Google Search box and started typing in the calculations (in plain English).  Once I entered what I needed to be calculated, Google performed the calculation for me and also sent me to an online calculator in the event I needed to perform additional calculations.

Google Search Calculations

I also found that you can perform math calculations using Microsoft’s search engine, called Bing, as well; however, minus the online calculator.

MediaFire App Now Available For Android

January 18, 2013

MediaFire is an online file storage and sharing service that most computer users at home are not familiar with. With MediaFire you are given 50GB’s of space (for FREE) with a 200 MB file upload size limit. Compared to the other online storage services (which typically offer much less FREE storage space), MediaFire is very generous in their offering. I have maintained an account with MediaFire for nearly 2 years and have never experienced an issue.

MediaFire

The complaint you will hear coming from people about MediaFire is that they will remove your account is your account is inactive. There is some truth to this; however, the rule is that if you must access the MediaFire API (your account) from either the Web, your Mobile platform or your desktop platform at least once per year and if you do that, your account will never be removed.  This is a pretty easy rule to follow; especially, that you are getting 50 GBs of online storage space.  If your account is in jeopardy you will receive sufficient notice via the email account you signed up with.

The one downfall to MediaFire, that I was experiencing, was no Android App available to access and manage my MediaFire files from my tablet. This has all changed within the past couple days (prior to the writing of this article).  MediaFire now has an Android mobile app available in the Google Play Store that can be downloaded to your Android phone or tablet.  You can get the MediaFire App [HERE] .

The MediaFire mobile app lets you access all your documents, photos, and videos from anywhere. Securely store, organize, and share all your data on the web and through your Android device.

MediaFire Mobile App

Features:

• Keep all your important files at your fingertips.
• View docs, spreadsheets, presentations, video, and listen to audio.
• Take and upload pictures and videos directly in the MediaFire app.
• Upload Android gallery images.
• Create and manage folders of files.
• Share files on the go via email, SMS, through other Android apps, and with copy and paste links.
• Quickly search all your MediaFire files and folders.

MediaFire Android App:  Requires Android OS 2.2 or higher

The android app that I settled with, that is FREE, is the acclaimed Kingsoft Office for Android. I have tested nearly every android app out there that is capable of creating, viewing and editing Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, and Kingsoft Office is, in my opinion, the best choice and the most accurate.

  • Share documents via Email
    and Cloud Storage.

    Email attachments.
  • Upload and download files
on Box.net, Google Drive and Dropbox.

Save Anything You Want to Remember On Your Phone or Computer with SpringPad

December 13, 2010

Here of late I have been on a roll with applications that are cloud based; or in other words applications that you run directly from the internet. Recently I have been testing an online note keeping application called SpringPad.

SpringPad

If you are an Evernote user then you will be able to relate to SpringPad; and I must say, if you are an Evernote user, then you need take a look at SpringPad. This app has come a long ways.

In summary SpringPad is a totally FREE powerful online application that gives you the ability to store information. Look at it as your personal database of everything that’s of interest to you that can be accessed anywhere in the world where you can get to the internet.

SpringPad

For example, I use SpringPad to bookmark web sites, keep notes, maintain to do lists, clip information from web pages, reflect my thoughts, etc…  All this information can be organized in notebooks or posted on your own digital bulletin board.  There are also mobile uses for SpringPad available such as barcode scanning, locating nearby places and businesses and photo saving.

Think of Springpad as your own place in the cloud – a high-powered internet-connected personal database of everything that’s of interest to you, even if you’re not ready to do something about it right away. Everything is automatically synced between your mobile devices and the web for instant and universal access.

The one feature that is most important to me is the SpringPad Google Chrome Browser Extension. With this extension installed you can instantly save information you want to save without leaving the site you are browsing. If you are not a Google Chrome user, there is a bookmarklet available that will let you do the same thing.

After testing SpringPad, I can honestly say it has found a home on my PC. I encourage you to give this application a try. It is FREE, requires no installation on your computer and has so many features I cannot begin to mention them all here.

What does the “G” represent in 3G and 4G?

October 31, 2010

If you are a mobile web user of the cellular phone systems, you may have heard the terms, 3G and 4G. I recently had someone ask me, “What does the “G” stand for?”.  Ironically, the answer to that question fell right into my lap while working on my blog.

Below is a clip from a PC Magazine Article, “What is 4G, And Do I Need It?” , that answers the “G” questions for us.

A “G” is a generation of wireless technology. Each generation offers significantly faster Internet access than the previous generation, but it’s incompatible with the previous generation—you have to upgrade your phone to use it, and carriers usually have to install new hardware.

The first G was the old analog cellular systems. 2G systems are digital, but slow. Many phones still use 2G. Internet speeds on 2G phones range from 9.6 Kbits/s to about 200 Kbps. 3G systems run from about 384 Kbps to—well, we’ll get to that.

4G systems such as LTE and WiMAX claim to have real-life speeds of 5 Mbits/s or greater, much like a home cable connection. The most recent versions of these technologies promise speeds in the hundreds of Mbits/s, faster than any home Internet connection available right now. 4G systems are also “all-IP.” Down the road, they’ll be able to replace the old circuit-switched voice phone calling with voice-over-IP systems.
