Nexus Flashlight

A down and dirty (nice looking) Android flashlight app that was originally designed for the Nexus line of smartphones, works on numerous other smartphone models, as well. I have this installed on my Nexus 5 and it serves one purpose only and that is to use the LED on my phone as a flashlight.

Overview:

-Keep the LED on when switching the application or locking the screen.
-Create a notification for fast off-switching of the LED when not in the application itself.
-Turn on the LED on application start to save even more time.
-It is fast. You do not have to wait for multiple seconds to start the LED flash.
-Resizable Widget: Turn on the LED right from your homescreen
-Put the widget on your lockscreen (Android 4.2 only)
-Customizable widget to make it look like a standard app shortcut in order to integrate it nicer with other app shortcuts on your home screen(*) [DOES NOT WORK ON THE NEXUS 5]
-Shortcut to quickly toggle the LED without opening the main application
-Customizable widget text size (Android 4.1.2+ only)

The Next Generation Of USB Connector
Will Plug In Either Way

@ Popular Science

Did you ever get frustrated when plugging in that USB connector? Well, someone was thinking when they came up with the next generation connector.

The new plugs and receptacles will be bilaterally symmetrical, so never again will you try and fail to plug in a USB plug because it’s upside-down!!!  READ MORE

Windows 8 For Dummies

image

I have been an advocate for the Dummies series of book on computers and Windows for years… This book, Windows 8 for Dummies, is a great way to introduce yourself to this new operating system (which is very stable; but, can be confusing, at first, to navigate).

Covers all the basics of using Windows 8–core desktop components, managing files and folders, saving files, using Windows search, printing, and working in the cloud

Shows how to get online, set up and use e-mail, use the latest version of Internet Explorer, set up security and virus protection, add music to the media player, organize photos, and edit media

Includes coverage on using Windows 8’s new start screen on both a desktop computer and a touchscreen device

A PC Tech’s Quick Reference Web Site

December 28, 2012

Just when I think I have found most of the golden nuggets on the internet, I come across another. While performing an update to the Bookmarks4Techs listing, a visitor to the site contacted me and suggested that I add the tech site GEGeek – PC Tech Quick Reference to the listing.

GEGeek

What I expected to find was a tech blog, but what I came across is a Geek’s paradise for anyone who is into computers; and especially,  computer repair & troubleshooting. While you are there, pay special attention to the GEGeek Tech Toolkit.  This toolkit should be called a Tech Tool Shop…  It is a 1.0 gig download and contains everything, as a tech, you would ever need.

An excerpt about the author of GEGeek:

This site is the culmination of years of CAREFULLY selecting a handful of links to assist me on my current job, personal consulting work and of course my own PCs. Not every site has all useful links ⁄ articles, but there were always one or two gems to be found on every site I visited. Keeping them readily available and manageable became quite a chore, so i created this site just to help me organize them and provide a quick reference . The “How To” is assumed knowledge, I just provide the quick reference.
