Amazon Drops The Price On The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” Tablet

March 20, 2013

Back in January I featured the Kindle Fire HD tablet as the tech product of the week. This week is sort of a repeat on the Kindle Fire HD and the reason is simply this:  I noticed that Amazon has dropped the price $30 on the 8.9” Wi-Fi model and $100 on the 8.9” 4G LTE model (with data plans). I am sure this is to keep Amazon competitive and my guess is that they have something else coming at us on the horizon. If you want to get on board with a tablet, the Kindle HD Fire with the price drop is an excellent opportunity.

Tech Product of the Week: Kindle Fire HD 7 Inch Tablet Computer

January 23, 2013

Looking for a tablet computer reminds me of the day when desktops started to flourish and everyone wanted one. It is like shopping for a car and by the end of the day you are more confused than you were at the beginning of the day.

Here is my take on Tablet Computers…  For the home based computer user, buy a reasonably priced Android OS based tablet, such as the Kindle Fire HD (7 inch). I cannot see putting out large amounts of money for a tablet; especially, when the next latest and greatest is just around the corner. We are only seeing the beginning of this type of technology.

I recently got my hands on the Kindle Fire HD and was very impressed. With the Kindle Fire you are really getting a great tablet that features a high definition display, great sound (Dolby Audio), dual-antenna Wi-Fi, a massive selection of Android Apps and much, much more for under $200…  I especially liked that the Fire has a Micro USB 2.0 port (for connection of a PC) and a Micro-HDMI port for high definition video output to a television. Many of the other 7 inch tablets lack these external connectivity options.  All-In-All, for the home based computer user, the Kindle Fire HD is a tablet to consider.

Perform Much Smaller Mouse Movements or Touch Swipes To Close A Windows 8 App

December 14, 2012

Recently I posted an article, The Easy Way To Close A Windows 8 App, that explains how to close an app in Windows 8 by positioning the mouse pointer at the top of the app screen (where the pointer turns into a hand); then, dragging and dropping the app to the bottom of the screen.

On a desktop computer where the screen can be quite large and the travel distance (or threshold) to drag and drop the app (to close it) can be an exercise in itself. It was at this point I wondered if there was not a way to close the app quicker using less travel distance. Sure enough, using the analogy of “if you can think it, someone else has done it”, I came across a small portable utility called Close Threshold for Metro Apps.

Close Threshold for Metro Apps

By using Close Threshold for Metro Apps, if you set the sliders to the left, save the settings, you will find that you will not have to drag an app to the bottom of the screen. The travel distance to close an app is reduced dramatically resulting in a more efficient and faster method to close the app.

There is also an additional feature where you can completely disable the “drag and drop” method of closing an app all together.

With Close Threshold for Metro Apps you will able:

  • to speed up Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to speed up Metro apps closing with touch gestures
  • to disable Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to disable Metro apps closing with touch

A Web Browser Optimized For The 10 Inch Tablet PC

September 12, 2012

Making a decision on what web browser to use on your tablet PC can be a tough decision. I personally have tried, and tested, the browser that ships with the Android OS, and others such as Opera, Dolphin and Firefox. What I have found, is that due to the various compatibility issues browsers face with tablets, tablet sizes and the Android OS, each have there own little quirks. Time will tell which browser will surface at the leader when the tablet browsing war slows down.

Another browser that crossed my plate that I am now testing is called Maxthon Tablet.

image

Maxthon Tablet is specifically optimized for the 10 inch tablet.  Note:  Actually the specs on the Google Play site indicate that Maxthon Tablet is optimized run on an Android based tablet 7.7 inches or greater tablet (7.7, 8.9, 10.1).

What I am finding is that Maxthon has done really a super job on this browser.  I find browsing with Maxthon Tablet, on my Toshiba Thrive tablet, gives me the same experience I have with the browser on my desktop computer. As a matter of fact, this browser has impressed me so much that it has become the only browser on my tablet.  At this point, Maxton runs rings around the other browsers.

Fastest and smartest tablet browser. Make no mistake, with over 500 million downloads of its PC web browser Maxthon knows how to make your web sizzle. Maxthon Mobile is packed with cool features like:

Sync to the Cloud – Your bookmarks/favorites travel with you from desktop to mobile.
Theme/Skin – Ever-growing collection of skins that can customize your browser the way you like it.
WWW/WAP switch – Switch between www and WAP versions of the web at your fingertip
RSS reader widget – Find, manage and read your favorite content quickly and easily
Speed Dial – Quick access of the best sites on the web.
Download Manager – Makes it easy to sort, schedule and grab the downloads you need: wherever, whenever.
Super Gesture – Use touch screen commands to surf with your fingertips.
Tab browsing – Powerful tab management that puts your
mobile screen to maximum use.
Amazing speed – Get websites super
fast.
Powerful personalization – Avatars and more.

Create A Mouse Cursor Infinity Effect

June 27, 2012

If you have a large screen computer monitor, you know that moving the mouse cursor around from one side of the screen to the other can be a real exercise. To help make your mouse lazy, and at the same time increase productivity, give Mousinity a try.

Mousinity

Mousinity is a portable app that creates an infinity effect for your cursor when it reaches the edges of your screen. For example if you go to the top of your screen, your mouse will appear on the bottom, right-to-left, etc.

Takes some getting used to, but once you do, you will be using Mousinity on a regular basis.

Note:  There is no tray icon with Mousinity.  To turn it “off”, simply run Mousinity again and select “yes”.
