A High-Def Video Network for the Internet Generation

August 31, 2011

Recently I have been exploring the various internet TV options out there and one of my favorite is Revision3.

Revision3

There are several reasons for this:

  1. Revision3 has a great selection of video content that features tech and geek oriented programming; however, there are other video selections and topics, as well.
  2. The broadcast quality of the video content is in high definition, which in itself makes watching the shows a real joy to view on just about any web platform out there (such as on your computer, tablet pc and phone). You can even download the shows to watch them later.
  3. Revision3 creates and produces its own content (see listing below) in a style that gives resemblance to an actual television network. The programming is real life based with a mixture of education and entertainment that keeps you going back for more.

Revision3

If you have never visited Revision3, I encourage you to do so.  Below are links that will take you to the actual shows.

Manage Multiple Email Accounts with POP Peeper

August 29, 2011

Occasionally you will see here at What’s On My PC, repeat reviews on top quality software that is graciously made available for FREE and software that I feel is a must have. Today I am doing a repeat review on one of my favorite software programs called POP Peeper.

POP Peeper

In today’s world of computing, compared to yesteryear, it is not uncommon to have more than one email account. As a result, managing and organizing multiple accounts can get out of hand real quick. A solution to bring it all together is POP Peeper.

POP Peeper is an email notifier that runs in your Windows task bar and alerts you when you have new email on your POP3, IMAP (with IDLE support), Hotmail\MSN\LiveMail, Yahoo, GMail, MyWay, Excite, iWon, RediffMail, Juno and NetZero accounts. IMAP supports allows you to access AOL, AIM, Fastmail and other services. Send mail directly from POP Peeper and use the address book to email your frequently used contacts. POP Peeper allows you to view messages using HTML or you can choose to safely view all messages in rich or plain text. Several options are available that will decrease or eliminate the risks of reading your email (viruses, javascript, webbugs, etc). POP Peeper can be run from a portable device and can be password protected. Many notification options are availble to indicate when new mail has arrived, such as sound alerts (configurable for each account), flashing scroll lock, skinnable popup notifier, customized screensaver and more.

I cannot say enough good things about this program. It does it all when you are trying to keep track of multiple email accounts. In example, I currently manage five different email accounts with each account serving a specific purpose. With POP Peeper I can pull down any incoming email from those accounts in one window. The cool part about this is, once setup, I can color code each account. This allows me to easily identify each email account (by color) and allows me to pick and choose (manage and organize) what email is important, etc… The real power with POP Peeper is the email notification feature that will automatically check your accounts (at preset time intervals) and let you know (by visual or audible cues) of any incoming email.

POP Peeper

News360 – Next Generation News Aggregation Service

August 26, 2011

One of the first things I do in the morning is preview the News from various sources on the internet. Recently I came across a news aggregation service, called News360, that not only is attractive but brings the news to you in a format that allows you to grasp up-to-date news events in a much broader sense. If you are not a news junkie, you soon will be once you experience News360 .

News360

Using News360 I get the true feeling that I can take in more information in a shorter element of time. This service uses a semantic analysis to inform you of major ongoing events and give you the news that is relevant to you. Once you find a news story that is of interest you click on it and an abbreviated version of the story will appear with tab options available that allow you to select and navigate to other media sources featuring the same story. You can go to the actual news source (or web page) featuring the story at any time from News360.

You are not required to signup for an account; however, I do recommend doing so. You will need a Facebook or Twitter account to signup. Once your account is setup you can then personalize News360 to pull down news from specific sources and save those sources under “My Interests” and/or “My Stories”.

News360 apps are available for the following platforms: iPhone, iPad, Win Phone 7, Playbook, Android and the Web.

[Did You Know?] You Can Use TeamViewer Remote Control Software to Manage Your Computer Network at Home

August 24, 2011

TeamViewer is the critically acclaimed remote control software that you can use to control any computer (anywhere) as if you were sitting right in front of it – even through firewalls.  It is engineered to work across your internet connection to allow you to remote into another PC that is connected to the internet. This type of setup is an excellent (and easy) way to provide support to others (such as friends and family).  The best part about TeamViewer is that it is FREE for non-commercial use.

TeamViewer

Typically, when working with TeamViewer you are working through the TeamViewer’s servers on the internet to make that remote connection happen; BUT, did  you know you can setup TeamViewer to manage your computer network at home (through a direct connection) without having to go through the TeamViewer’s servers? For this purpose, you have to configure TeamViewer to accept incoming LAN connections.

The benefit of this is that after you install the TeamViewer software on all of the computers on your home network, you can remote into each of those computers to perform maintenance, transfer files, multi-task by using more than one computer, etc… Recently I have been using and testing the TeamViewer direct connection on my home network over a wireless connection and have found that it works flawlessly. Connections on your local (home) network are initiated via the IP address (or the computer name).

To set this up, you will need to install TeamViewer on each of the computers that are on your network at home and then follow the instructions below. After setting up your connection, configure TeamViewer to start with Windows. This will allow you to perform an unattended remote session with another PC without having someone being present at the PC.

1. Click on Extras / Options / General.

TeamViewer - Configuration

2. For Incoming LAN connections, select the option accept from the drop-down menu.  Once you select the “accept” option you will be prompted to generate a password.  There may be a slight delay from the time you select “accept” and the prompt to generate a password appears.

TeamViewer - Configuration

How to establish a LAN connection:

1. Start TeamViewer and click on the Remote Control tab.

2. Enter the IP address of the PC you wish to access and click on Connect to Partner.

3.  The TeamViewer Authentication dialog opens.

4. Enter the password of the remote computer and click on Log On.

5. The desktop of the other computer should display.

Big News This Past Week That Will Impact the World of Computing As We Know It

August 22, 2011

What I find so interesting these days is that we have so much information thrown at us in terms of “news” that we often are unable to process it all. This past week two major news events in the world of technology occurred that could impact the world of computing as we know it. What was interesting about this, prior to myself posting this article, is that I asked people, did you know or hear about Google buying Motorola Mobility and about Hewlett Packard’s exit from personal computers??? Not one person I conversed with knew about these hot news items…

image

The news about Google and Motorola Mobility is a strange (and suspicious) acquisition in itself. Google has been under the gun from patent infringement actions by Apple and Microsoft, as a result of its’ Android mobile operating system; and, some say this acquisition is a counter move or leverage tactic to protect itself. Pretty complex stuff, but this acquisition is another example of a big dog gaining control over the toys we use and buy (especially the Android driven smartphones and tablet PCs).

The news about Hewlett Packard dropping their personal computers just literally put me in shock. I have always owned HP computers in my home and now I guess I will really have to build my own : ) . In all seriousness, this news is like suicide. HP’s stock dropped big time over this news; plus the HP Touchpad Tablet PC that they just put out there, in July (at $499 for the base model) has become a boat anchor and can be had (if you push the internet envelope) for as low as $99.

In all my years of computing I have seen things come and go and understandably so when computing was in its’ early development; but, in today’s world of computing to see news like this has me wondering what direction are we really heading into.

To help bring you up to speed on these hot news topics involving Google and Hewlett Packard here are two articles you can jump to that really brings it home:
