Explore Your Android Device With ES File Explorer

March 30, 2012

Exploring or navigating the file (and folder) structure on an Android device can be quite challenging depending on the device. For example I currently have three devices (Toshiba Thrive Tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet and a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Smartphone) in my household that are Android OS driven; and all three are limited or have minimal interface to the file structure.

Being the geekster that I am, a good file manager is a must in order to adequately manage the files on the computer or any device where file management is possible. For Android, the topper in the file management category in my book is ES File Explorer.

ES File Explorer

ES File Explorer, hands down, is the best out there…  For me, the power in this file manager is that, not only can you browse the file structure on the device, you can also connect and perform file operations on your computer network (via file shares) and in the cloud (with Box, SugarSync and Dropbox).  FTP and Bluetooth file transfer capabilities are also built in…  For example through ES File Explorer I can connect to my 50 GB Box.com account on the internet and perform file management operations (such as cut, copy, paste, etc.), as if they are local on the device.

Another feature, I really like, is that with a horizontal swipe of the finger, I can toggle between the local file structure screen, to the LAN screen (local area network screen), to the Cloud network screen, and to the FTP screen.

ES File Explorer

I am telling you, I would be lost without this app (which is FREE) on my Android devices (especially the Kindle Fire). ES File Explorer is available for download onto your Android devices (for FREE) through Google Play (formerly called the Android Market.

Latest Features List :

* File Manager — Operate files(Copy, Paste, Cut/Move, Create, Delete and Rename, Share/Send) in the phone and computers

* Multiselect files

* Application manager — Manage apps(Install, Uninstall, Backup, Shortcuts, Category)

* Compress and Decompress ZIP files, Unpack RAR files, can create encrypted (AES 256 bit) ZIP files

* View Different file formats, photos, docs, videos anywhere, support third party applications such as Document To Go to open document files

* Thumbnails for APK,images, and with an inbuilt image browser

* Text viewers and editors

* Search files

* Access your Home PC, via WIFI with SMB

* FTP, it’s your FTP client, manage the files on the FTP server as the ones on the sd card

* Dropbox,Box.net, Sugarsync, it’s an enhanced cloud storage client other than the official version. It can save photos and videos to your net drive and share your photos and docs, easily edit docs in your account.

* Bluetooth file transfer tool. You can copy and paste files between bluetooth ready devices. It supports OBEX FTP for browsing devices and transfering files between Bluetooth devices.

* Kill tasks, with a one click, pretty simple widget for auto kill, with ignore list to ignore some applications you don’t want to kill. It is an advanced task killer to kill running applications and clean memory(This feature needs ES Task Manager module installed)

* Shortcuts, bookmark manager (This feature needs ES Bookmark Manager module installed)

* Root explorer feature. It is the ultimate file management tools for root users. You might access the whole file system and data directories, and change permissions.

* Developers can visit our website for the developer interface for picking files from your applications, email attachments, etc.

* And much more.

Automatically Get the Mouse Cursor Out Of The Way

March 29, 2012

You probably noticed that the past several days I have not posted much. This is due that I have been using my writing skills on another personal matter that has consumed, not only my time, but what brain cells I have left.

During the course of this personal writing venture, there were quite a few occasions where I had to swat the mouse pointer out of my view so that it would not distract me or change my focus. Afterwards, I started to wonder if there was an utility out there that would move the pointer out of the way for me (automatically)? In other words, I was looking for something that when I started to type, the cursor would move out of view and park itself.

Sure enough, I soon found my answer with Park Cursor Aside

image

Whenever you type on keyboard, the mouse cursor is automatically parked (moved) aside to a defined screen / active window position. This way your view of the input field is not blocked by the mouse cursor.

Right click on tray icon and select Settings, to define the parking position and other values.

Close All Running Applications With Just A Single Click

March 27, 2012

You talk about point and click…  Here is a small software utility (called Close All Windows) that gives you the ability to close all running applications with a single click. No installation is required. Simply download Close All Windows, extract the file and create a shortcut to the file on your desktop; or, if you have Windows 7, pin the shortcut to your taskbar. You can even tell Close All Windows to exclude certain windows that you do not want closed. If you are like me and end up with many applications open at the same time, this utility makes it easy to bring down the house and close all of those windows at once.

A Tech Support Care Package For Parents

March 22, 2012

Helping our parents or older friends break through that barrier that they think they are dumb about technology can be a tough call; when in fact they are on the same level as everyone else.  Yes, the new generation coming up is being exposed to technology like never before but that does not make them any smarter. In fact, as we progress in this age of digital technology, we are actually dumbing ourselves and our kids down to the point that someday our dependence on technology will become so strong that if it suddenly all turned “off”, we will be like zombies.

Ok, enough of Ramblin’ Rick’s theory on the digital technology age…  Today I wandered onto a site, brought to you by Google, called “Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package” that may be helpful in getting your parents (or older friends) to break through that fear barrier of using their computers.

Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package

Send Your Parents A Tech Support Care Package is at a very basic level and does not contain everything you need to know, but there are some interesting video tutorials that are quite good.  You will find four categories that offer an array of videos:

THE BASICS
WORLD WIDE WEB
COMMUNICATION
MEDIA
FINDING INFORMATION

What you do is fill out the form on the site, select your category and topic, choose some choice words, and send the tutorial instruction to Mom and Dad.

Manage And Keep Your Software (apps) Up-To-Date With AllMyApps

March 20, 2012

I am sure if you are regular visitor to What’s On My PC you will find that my main point of interest is FREE software. I typically review software by downloading, installing and using the software for awhile before I give it a thumbs up. As a result, I end up with quite a collection of software (or referred to as “apps”, in today’s world”) that requires constant monitoring for software updates. I am adamant about maintaining and keeping my software up-to-date to help deter and prevent malware infections.

Today I came across a cloud based service that you may be interested in exploring that is called AllMyApps, that is specifically setup to manage the software (or apps) that you install on all of your computers.

AllMyApps

Simply sign up for an account and download the AllMyApps software that you will ultimately use to manage your software (or apps). Now, the really cool part about AllMyApps is the large library of FREE software applications they have available. They have just about every popular (FREE) software app available that I could throw at it.  Even if you do not install the software manager, the large resource of software apps on this site is a gold mine.

Once you have installed the software manager component on your computer, you can visit the AllMyApps website (or apps store) to select the software you desire to install.  The software manager component of AllMyApps can be used to select, install, launch and uninstall any software they have available.

Now, this get’s better…  After you sign up for an account, you can also manage your web apps (or websites) in a dial pad (tiled) type of interface that allows you to move the tiles around, rename them, etc.  Look for “My Web Apps” on the site after you setup your account to access your own personalized launching pad to your favorite websites.

I have to admit, I am still exploring AllMyApps, and I have not covered all of the bases, but I am pretty excited about what I am seeing.

Give Your Mouse Some Character With 4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls

March 19, 2012

When I first came across 4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls I picked up my mouse and wondered if my mouse was gender specific; due, I never ever heard anyone call their mouse as a he or a she. I decided to do something about this. I downloaded and installed 4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls. Now, WordPress please do not kick me out for this article, but this utility is a for real and after I completed the article, I started thinking this article is something made for Saturday Night Live.

After downloading and running 4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls I immediately noticed that wherever I moved my mouse pointer, 8 red balls followed the pointer as if they were on a bungee cord. If you right mouse click the icon for this utility in the taskbar tray, you are presented with the settings where you I can increase/decrease the number of balls, adjust the transparency, the speed and select different sets of balls (i.e. glass balls, red balls, blue balls, soccer balls, baseballs, silver bullets). Since this utility requires no installation, it can be easily removed if you become too mesmerized or you decide your mouse does not need to be put through this.

4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls

4ur Windows 8 Mouse Balls is a lightweight portable Windows program. 8 or more balls follows the mouse on your windows desktop. It’s a small fun program (portable app) for all Windows-NT systems (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000).

Copy Cassette Tapes and Vinyl LPs (Records) To CD With Audacity

March 16, 2012

I don’t know how many times over the years I have been approached and asked if I knew of a low cost software solution to copy (or convert) cassette tapes and Vinyl LP’s (records) to CD (or the computer). To be honest, and being as software savvy as I think I am, I often was not able to provide a good solution and left scratching my head.

Well today, I can give you a software solution that is as low cost as it gets (FREE), is well known, and most recently was updated (after several years without any updates). That solution is called Audacity

Audacity

Audacity is a free, easy-to-use and multilingual audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
  • And more! See the complete list of features.

Now that I have provided you with the software solution (Audacity); next comes the instruction on “How To” copy (or convert) tapes or LP’s into a digital format. This is where the Audacity website excels. Not only do the developers provide an excellent software solution, they also provide an excellent online manual [ CLICK HERE ] that specifically addresses what we are looking for in this article:

Scan To The Cloud With CloudScan

March 14, 2012

I started wondering if there was software available (for FREE) that would allow you to use your scanner to scan documents to the cloud?  What I specifically was looking for was scanning software that would load in my browser and allow me to scan documents to my Google Docs account.

Sure enough, if you can think of it, then it has been done. What I came across on this hunt was CloudScan that met my criteria, and more!

CloudScan

CloudScan is a completely free scan application. It provides a new, simple way to scan your documents, pictures or photos and save them to mulitpage PDF files. Cloud can be successfully used on one computer. The simple, friendly interface provides results in seconds. If you have more than one PC (home or office network), you are getting a revolutionary approach to scanning: just install the SharedScanner component to one PC, and you can share scanner and use it from almost any other computer or device without installation. Just a usual web browser is required.

– Scan documents, pictures, and photos to PDF and TIFF
– Work with any TWAIN compatible scanners (more than 1600 are available on the market)
– Scan inside a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome)
– Share scanner accross network. Nothing to install on any machine after the initial installation on your PC with a scanner
– Very easy to use. One click to scan, one more to save to multipage PDF or TIFF.
– It is the only free scanning software for web browsers

A Minimalistic Program That Provides Basic Automation (recording and playback)

March 13, 2012

When on the hunt for FREE software, I am always up for software that is unique; something that is outside the norm. Today, I want to introduce you to a small software utility that is only 33KBs in size that I think you may find quite useful.  It is called TinyTask

TinyTask

What TinyTask does is simply this; it can record actions that you perform on the computer and then compiles those actions into a self executable file that will allow you to later playback (and automate) those actions. In other words you can turn the task that you record into your very own standalone program that will automate a task that you routinely (or repetitiously) perform. TinyTask can also be used as a training presentation tool to show students how to perform a specific action on the computer.

Developer’s Description:

Our most popular freeware, TinyTask provides quick & easy automation by recording/playback. It is a case study in minimalist programming: the entire program is only 33k — and over 14k are graphics, which means the executable portion is very small and efficient. It is used as the test harness for the “Recording” feature of vTask Studio.

New: now includes an EXE compiler! Turn your recordings into standalone programs. If you were stranded on a deserted island, this is the one program you would want.

TinyTask is completely portable, requires no installation, and will not touch or alter any registry settings. As I mentioned, I am always up for something outside the norm and TinyTask meets that criteria.  Great job to the developers on this little jewel that really shines.

Reduce The File Size of Photos Up To 5X’s

March 12, 2012

With the camera technology today, and constantly improving, the digital photos we take are quite large in file size. This can be an issue when storing those photos (either on your computer or in the cloud) and can be an issue when sending those photos via email (due to the file size limitations by the email providers).

JPEGmini  To help you resolve this issue, I came across an online (cloud based) service called JPEGmini that has the ability to reduce the file size of a photo up to 5 times without degrading the quality of the original photo. I have used this service to reduce the file size of the graphics and pictures that I post on the blog so that I do not use up my space on WordPress.

JPEGmini

Some Facts:

JPEGmini files are optimized JPEG files, whose parameters have been tuned to significantly reduce the file size without affecting perceptual quality.

Depending on the resolution and quality of the original photo, high resolution photos produced by digital cameras, you can expect a reduction of 50%-80% in file size with JPEGmini

Each album that you upload can contain up to 1000 photos, and can be up to 200 MB in size. You can upload as many albums as you want.

The best bet with JPEGmini is to sign up for a FREE account. This will allow you to batch upload and download any photos where you desire to reduce the file sizes. If you are concerned about whether the conversion has affected your photo (or photos), with JPEGmini you can do a side-by-side comparison.
