Use Your Google Drive As A Fax Machine

April 30, 2012

HelloFax  Take advantage of your Google Drive and use HelloFax to sign and send faxes online.

With Google Drive being a new service provided by Google I am starting to see third party developers coming out with apps that integrate and take advantage of Google Drive. HelloFax is a prime example and is one of the first out of the gate by offering 50 free fax pages per month and unlimited signatures.

After integrating with HelloFax, you’ll get a HelloFax folder in your Google Drive account. This folder will be automatically populated with your inbound and outbound faxes, as well as your signed documents and signature requests.

By downloading HelloFax (as a Google App) you can have the functionality of HelloFax with any file in your Google Drive folder. HelloFax currently supports the following file types (doc, docx, pdf, tif, tiff, ppsx, ppt, pptx, tif, tiff, jpg, jpeg, png, xls, xlsx, txt, and gif).

Appears you can only send faxes with the FREE account and if you need to receive faxes you will need to sign up for either the Basic, Premium or Ultimate plan. Oh well, its’ FREE and gives you the ability to send up to 50 pages per month (which is more than I will ever use from home).

April 26, 2012

I visit daily the Amazon daily FREE paid (Android) app giveaway and today I noticed they have available Audubon Birds: A Field Guide to North American Birds.

Audubon Birds

This app typically goes for $9.99 and is available today for FREE.

Audubon Birds: A Field Guide to North American Birds includes over 770 species and contains the most complete species descriptions updated to the latest AOU checklist, with extensive details on behavior, habitat, life history, nesting times, number of eggs, nest location, bird family information, similar species, and family. All Audubon guides feature professional color photographs, in-depth descriptions of each species, fast and easy navigation, state-of-the-art search functions, real time availability, life lists, sightings, and photo albums. All apps are created in affiliation with the National Audubon Society.

Note: Audubon Birds has 529 MB of additional content available as an optional free download. Because of the large file size, if you choose to download the content we recommend using a strong Wi-Fi connection–the bulk download is not a requirement for using the app. This application is not optimized for large tablets.

NEW Version of Microsoft Security Essentials

April 25, 2012

I am often asked; “What security software do I use for my main layer of protection? My answer is, “Microsoft Security Essentials”…

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home or small business PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials

I currently have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on all of my PCs and it has yet to let me down; HOWEVER, as with any security software (no matter which one you install), you have to install “common sense” alongside it.

What prompted me to write about Microsoft Security Essentials is that Version 4.0, which has been in beta since late 2011, has been officially released.  According to one of my information sources (CNet), the released version “is part of the standard product update release cycle. This service update contains product enhancements to improve performance and user experience. We have improved on Microsoft Security Essentials’ Automatic Remediation, which will automatically quarantine highly harmful threats without prompting the user to take action as well as minor bug fixes in set up, malware remediation and other areas.”

If you are looking for a security software option, that is FREE; that is easy to understand and use; that uses minimal system resources; and is engineered by a company that we are all familiar with, then Microsoft Security Essentials is a good choice.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up-to-date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you’re free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC. Running more than one antivirus program at the same time can potentially cause conflicts that affect PC performance.

** IMPORTANT **  —  When changing security software on your PC from one brand to another, it is very important that you completely uninstall the security software you intend to remove. The uninstaller built into windows will not cut it. I highly recommend you either visit the software maker’s site to get information to uninstall the product or use a third party uninstaller such as AppRemover.

The free AppRemover utility enables the thorough uninstallation of security applications like antivirus and antispyware from your computer. Remove computer stress. Simply, cleanly and effectively.

Alert! Existing SkyDrive Users – Sign In To Keep Your 25 GBs

April 24, 2012

If you are an existing Microsoft SkyDrive User it is important that you sign into your account and acknowledge that you desire to keep your 25GBs of online storage space. Failure to do so could result in your 25GBs being reduced down to 7GBs of space.

image

Any registered SkyDrive user *who has uploaded files to SkyDrive* as of April 22nd can opt in to keep 25GB of free storage while still getting all of the benefits of the new service.

If you are already using 4GBs of space on SkyDrive you will automatically keep your 25GBs.

This all may sound like a dirty trick, but Microsoft is working toward making SkyDrive better (with new apps) and making SkyDrive accessible from Windows Explorer. For example, they recently came out with a preview of SkyDrive for the Windows Desktop which gives you the ability to seamlessly sync your files (from Windows Explorer).

Here’s where you go to try SkyDrive today:

As a result of these new changes I suspect Microsoft is gearing up for an anticipated increase of people using SkyDrive (thus the reduction in the online storage space). According to Microsoft, currently 99.4 percent of current SkyDrive subscribers use 7GBs of space or less (thus the reasoning for the 7GB level). If 7GBs of space is not enough for your situation, they are offering a tiered pricing model to increase that space.

You can read more about these changes [HERE]

Split Your Chrome Browser Window In Two With Dualless

April 20, 2012

On many occasions, when working on a blog article (or post), I find it useful to open two browser windows side-by-side in order to quickly research information in one browser window and quickly post my thoughts or links in the other browser window. Windows 7 gives us the ability to drag a window to the sides of the monitor to make this happen; however, when using my browser (Google Chrome) there is another (easier way) that requires only two clicks of the mouse.

It is called, Dualless

Dualless

Dualless is a Google Chrome Browser extension that gives you the ability to split your browser window in two (to simulate a dual monitor setup). For example, if you have two tabs open in Chrome, by clicking on the Dualless button on the extension toolbar, you will be presented with various ratios that you can split the browser window (see below). Simply click on a ratio selection and the browser tabs will separate into two windows at the ratio you desire. To return to a full screen window simply click on the Dualless button, select the ratio of “1” and the browser will return to full screen.

image

So far I am finding Dualless to be an extremely useful tool when blogging (as I mentioned), researching information and for shopping on the internet.

The NEW Weather Channel App for Windows

April 19, 2012

If you follow my blog, then you know I am a lover of clocks and weather applications. Today, I was pointed to the NEW Weather Channel App for Windows that is now part of my collection.

Weather Channel App

The NEW Weather Channel App features a large interactive map and radar, instant access to severe weather alerts, video forecasts, current conditions, hourly conditions, and extended forecasts. You can add and monitor up to 10 locations and the local temperature is available in the system tray. After installing and launching the app you will notice that the background theme changes with the current weather (and between night and day). The only fault I can find is that you will be presented with an ad in the bottom right corner; however, considering it is FREE and by the Weather Channel, I can overlook the ad.

Next Version of Windows To Be Downsized To Three Editions

April 17, 2012

According to The Windows Blog, Windows 8, the next release of the Windows OS platform, will be available for retail in three flavors:  Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT; making it easier for the consumer to understand. It still fascinates me that the people in the “real world” (not the “tech world”) are still oblivious that there is another version of Windows in the works.

Windows 8

To help bring the “real world” up to speed, reflected is a description of what to expect.

For PCs and tablets powered by x86 processors (both 32 and 64 bit), there will be two editions:

Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. For many consumers, Windows 8 will be the right choice. It will include all the features above plus an updated Windows Explorer, Task Manager, better multi-monitor support and the ability to switch languages on the fly (more details on this feature can be found in this blog post),which was previously only available in Enterprise/Ultimate editions of Windows. For China and a small set of select emerging markets, we will offer a local language-only edition of Windows 8.

Windows RT is the newest member of the Windows family – also known as Windows on ARM or WOA.

This single edition will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors and will help enable new thin and lightweight form factors with impressive battery life. Windows RT will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Sync Box, Google Docs, Evernote and More With SocialFolders

April 16, 2012

If you use Box (online file storage service) and Google Docs, then you are well aware that there is no easy way to sync your online files (and folders) with your computer; UNTIL NOW!

SocialFolders

I came across an online service called SocialFolders where you can sync your files at Box, Google Docs and more (such as Evernote) from one location. You can also transfer files from one service to another and the cool part is that it acts just like any other folder you are accustomed to in Windows explorer. SocialFolders performs the sync tasks in the background while you are working on your computer giving you an automated way of backing up your files (online and offline). – (see video below)

SocialFolders enables you to sync (nerdy word for synchronize) the Windows Explorer with your online accounts: social networks, photo sharing applications, online storage services, etc.

Syncing means that the content of your websites will be updated when you update it in your local folders, and vice-versa.

To get started using Social Folders:

  • Download and Run the install package and follow the instructions.
  • Once SocialFolders is installed, a dialog box will appear inviting you to sign up. Fill in the required information and the application will launch automatically.
  • Right click on the SocialFolders icon in the systray to get started with SocialFolders.

image

  • At this point you can select the services you desire to sync with.

SocialFolders currently supports Facebook, Flickr, Google Docs, Instagram, Photobucket, SmugMug, Box, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter. Appears SkyDrive support may be in the works… From what I can tell, it appears that SocialFolders allows you to sync up to three services with the free version.

Note that YouTube allows only uploads, whereas Instagram allows only download. All the other services work both ways.

ToolWiz Care Adds An Image Editor

April 14, 2012

Recently I did a post on ToolWiz Care, the “free tool set designed to speed up your PC and give your system full care”. I am not going to go into a long description of what ToolWiz Care is all about; however, if you have not experienced ToolWiz Care and you desire to learn more about it, I encourage you to read the original article [ HERE ] .

I have been using and closely following the development of this all-in-one super utility and can’t put it down. Today, I found that they added another feature to the program where you can perform a screen capture and following the capture the captured image will open into a newly added picture editor. It took me a bit to find the editor, but once I did I was quite impressed with the editor even though it is a new baby.

To get to the editor (if you have ToolWiz Care installed), you can right click on the ToolWiz Care icon in the tray or right click the toolbar and select screen capture from the menu.  Also, on the toolbar you will find a button to perform a screen capture.

image

After you perform a screen capture, you can open the the captured image in the editor (see below).

image

Once the captured image is opened in the editor you can perform various image editing tasks, such as adding arrows, text, etc….  I also found that I could load an image from the computer (such as a photo) and perform some basic image editing and enhancement tasks.

image

ToolWiz Care continues to fascinate me; especially, for the quality of tools I am seeing in something that is a new kid on the block. Getting to the picture editor took me some navigating around to locate it, but when I found it, I was quite impressed. The developers may want to consider adding the editor to the main program or to the floating toolbar where it can be quickly launched. I could see launching the editor to load an image from the computer (to fix a pic, add text, a watermark, etc…).

To the developers of ToolWiz Care, keep up the great work!  You have a follower here at What’s On My PC

Read and Scroll A Web Page Hands Free

April 12, 2012

If you have ever visited my sister site Bookmarks4techs.com, you probably noticed it is quite lengthy and requires a lot of scrolling.

imageA way to remedy this issue is to use the small javascript utility called HandsFread that will auto-scroll the page for you.

The easiest way to use HandsFread is to visit the website and drag the HandsFread button to your bookmarks bar; then, go to Bookmarks4techs.com or any site where the page is lengthy and click on the HandsFread button.  The page will automatically start to scroll.  There is another method of setting this up; however, will require some configuration on your part.

I did notice that when I clicked on the button more than once, the scroll speed increased.  Also, appears this is a first release of this utility; therefore, you may experience a bugaboo or two.

FREE – Unlimited Image (Photo) Sharing and Storage for an Unlimited Time

April 11, 2012

There are numerous image (photo) sharing and storage sites out there, but I ventured across an image sharing (and storage) service called imgbox, that really caught my attention!

imgbox

The Pro’s: Easy to use; image sharing via URL links; inline hotlinking (great for us bloggers); fast upload speed, batch uploads; 10 mb max file size (jpg, gif, png); unlimited storage for an unlimited time; can name (edit) galleries, can individually select and move images from one gallery to another; and once a gallery of images load you can scroll the images either horizontal (i.e. previous or next) or simply use your mouse wheel to scroll vertically.

The Con’s: Actually I only noticed one fault. Unless I am missing something; and if I am, please let me know. I did not see a method to batch download my images. You can capture the share codes for the images to individually download an image, but no easy method noticed to perform a batch downloads.

Overall, the fact that you have unlimited storage space for an unlimited time; imgbox is looking pretty good to me!
