Get A Snapshot View of Your Network Information

May 30, 2012

Running the command IPConfig is typically a windows based command used to display all current TCP/IP network configuration values (such as the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters). The IPConfig command also can be run with a host of parameters that will perform various network related functions such as refreshing the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) settings.

Recently I came across another third party form of IPConfig that is also called IPConfig that will centralize and display all your network information, local and remote, in one window.

IPConfig

The purpose here with the third party form of IPConfig is to give you  a snapshot view of the following network related settings on your PC:

  • Internal & external IP addresses
  • MAC address
  • DNS server IP address
  • Subnet mask
  • Gateway IP address
  • Hostname
  • Current network speed
  • Network adapter name
  • DNS suffix
  • DNS enabled
  • DNS dynamically configured
  • Auto updating

TODAY ONLY – Seagate Expansion 500 GB Portable External Hard Drive

May 28, 2012

When the holidays roll around you can really find some decent deals on computer and technology products. One tech bargain that jumped out at me was at Amazon (TODAY ONLY) that can be a real benefit to everyone is the Seagate 500 GB Portable External Hard Drive.

image

I cannot overstress the importance of backing up your personal files (such as pictures, documents, videos, etc…). The cool part about this particular drive is that it is designed with portability in mind. No power adapter is required. Simply connect a single USB cable and you are ready to go. These types of drives are useful in backing up your data, then moving the drive to an offsite location. Another factor with this drive is that it is Bus-powered USB 3.0, backwards compatible with USB 2.0.  So if you have USB 3.0 technology built into your PC, then file transfers will occur at lightning speed.  Again, this deal is TODAY ONLY!

One of My Favorites – SearchMyFiles

May 25, 2012

I have never been a real fan of the search operation that is built into windows; instead, have relied on third party applications, such as SearchMyFiles.

What I find, is that most people do not want to try something that is not attached to the operating system (or they do not understand it); however, there are those occasions where the third party applications (in my opinion) are better. In this case, SearchMyFiles, is my “go to” utility when I need to find a specific file on my computer (or another computer, since it is a portable app).

The only thing, looking through the eyes of the home computer user, is that SearchMyFiles may appear difficult to understand; when, in fact once you see that there is really only two components in the program that you really need to focus on, it becomes quite easy to use.

Again, SearchMyFiles is a portable app. Just download it and run. Once the program loads, look for the area that says “base folder”.  In that area type in (or browse for) the folder location or drive location that you desire to perform the search. I typically type in what you see in the screenshot below. Next, type in the filename using wildcards.  What are wildcards?  If you notice below, there is an asterisk before and after the word “*starburn*. Using the wildcard format tells SearchMyFiles to search the “C” Drive (which is almost always your hard drive) for any file that contains the word “starburn”. By using the wildcard format, I eliminate any possibility of the file not being located.

SearchMyFiles

SearchMyFiles (by NirSoft) is probably one of my most used portable apps.  It is very fast for a search utility that does not rely on indexing and has many features making it a super powerful search utility.

Free Windows Clipboard Manager Software With Multilingual Support

May 24, 2012

When you cut and copy text or images on your PC, that data is temporarily stored on the clipboard. Typically each instance when you perform the cut and copy operation, the data that was previously on the clipboard is wiped out. To keep this from occurring you need to get your hands on a clipboard manager where any cut and copy operations that you perform, the data is stored and can be retrieved at a later time.  I often use a clipboard manager when working on the blog and other projects.

I have featured clipboard managers on the blog in the past; but, today I want to share a NEW one called Multi Clipboard Recorder. Where this one differs from the others is that it is very easy to use and understand (and is portable). Simply start it up and copy away!

To view what you are storing on the Multi Clipboard Recorder, click the button, as shown in the screenshot. On the left side of the window you can individually select what data items you want to use to paste into whatever it is you are working on. A green check will appear for the item that you select.

Multi Clipboard Recorder

To use Multi Clipboard Manager on your flash drive, it appears you have to install it to your PC, then copy the folder over to the flash drive.

Key Features:

  • Records clipboard data and restore it.
  • Support all programs.
  • Support all data formats.
  • Multilingual support.
  • Display the contents of the clipboard.
  • Duplication of data input fast.
  • Portable freeware tool.

Add Pixlr Online Photo Editor to Your Google Drive

May 22, 2012

With the inception of Google Drive (Google’s new cloud storage and collaboration service), there are quite a few apps that you can set up that will work hand-in-hand with Google Drive.  One of my favorites is Pixlr.

Pixlr is an online photo editor that gives you the ability to work with photos (and graphics) inside your web browser (no software install is required). If you are already subscribed to Google Drive, you can add Pixlr from the Chrome Web Store. After you have this completed, you will be able to open images from Google Drive right into Pixlr.

An easy way to add apps (such as Pixlr) to Google Drive is to open up your Google Drive, click on the “Create” button, then click on “More”, then click on “Get More Apps”.  When you click on “Get More Apps”, you will be redirected to the Chrome Store where there is a wide (and growing) selection of Google Drive compatible apps.

Over 450 Web Fonts Now Available In Google Docs

May 21, 2012

It still surprises me when I talk computers with people, the number of people that are not familiar with Google Docs. Google Docs, as it rapidly continues to evolve, has become the premier online office suite consisting of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings and forms. When you sign up for Google Docs you are in essence now signing up for Google Drive. If you are a home based computer user and you are looking for an office suite solution (such as a word processor), then Google Docs is the solution.

Earlier in the month, Google made available over 450 web fonts that can be used to spruce up your Google Docs creations. The fonts are very easy to get to and easy to turn “on” and “off” (or select)

Simply open up a new (or existing) document, go to the toolbar, select the font button and a drop down box will appear. At the bottom of the font list you will see “add fonts.  Click on “add fonts” and you will be presented with another box where you can preview, pick and choose what fonts you want to use. The fonts you select will be added to the drop down box where the font will be available anytime you work on a document.

Locate All the Computers On Your Wired or Wireless Local Network

May 17, 2012

If you are into networking, you most likely have heard of Radmin Remote Access Software. To promote Radmin, I noticed that they offer a FREE IP Scanner called Advanced IP Scanner that is helpful in locating and monitoring the devices (wired or wireless) that are connected to your network (home or business).  Scanners such as this is helpful in identifying the IP addresses (which dynamically can change) and MAC Addresses of those devices.  Years ago when I managed a network, I used an IP scanner such as this to make sure all of my network devices and computers were alive and functioning properly.

Advanced IP Scanner is a free, fast and easy-to-use network scanner for Windows. In a matter of seconds, Advanced IP Scanner can locate all the computers on your wired or wireless local network and conduct a scan of their ports. The program provides easy access to various network resources, such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and shared folders. It also enables you to detect all the IP addresses on your WiFi network. With Advanced IP Scanner, you can wake up and shut down remote groups of Windows machines. If you use Radmin remote access software, you will also enjoy the improved Radmin Server detection and integration capabilities, which allow you to connect to any scanned machine with Radmin Server.

Advanced IP Scanner

What Advanced IP Scanner does:

  • Scans network in a matter of seconds
  • Detects any network devices
  • Finds HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and shared folders
  • Lets you connect to PCs running Radmin Serverwith one click
  • Allows you to shut down computers remotely
  • Supports Wake-On-Lan
  • Favorites list for easy network management
  • Export to HTML or CSV
  • Easy and user-friendly interface

Everything you need to know about Advanced IP Scanner 2.1 in just 3 minutes (video)

Kylo The Browser For Your TV is Now Open Source

May 15, 2012

I bet you have never heard of Kylo?

Kylo is a Mozilla (Firefox) based web browser that has been specifically developed for TV screens (home theater). Kylo gives you the ability to browse the web on your HDTV from the comfort of your couch.

Kylo is a web browser developed by Hillcrest Labs for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Initially released in 2010, the Kylo web browser features a 10-foot user interface, with large fonts and buttons that make it easy to see from across the room, making it especially suitable for use with a HTPC (Home theater PC) connected directly to a high-definition television.

Kylo

The cool here with Kylo is that it is now open source, meaning it is being made available to developers (throughout the world) to play with… Even though it was developed for big screen TV, I downloaded it to my PC and was very impressed. Kylo auto resized itself to fit my screen and  I soon found Kylo to contain a great selection of media content (by default).  You are not just limited to media content and are able to browse the internet as you would with any other browser.  It actually gave the illusion (on my 23” monitor) of a big screen…  Kylo also features a popup keyboard that gives you the ability to go to mouse only browsing.

If you are looking for a really cool way to browse online media, then give Kylo a try. With Kylo going open source, I can’t wait to see what other builds we will see come out of this.

Note:  There are many ways to connect your PC to your HDTV.  [CLICK HERE] to learn how.

Access Your Box (Cloud Storage) Files Directly From Windows Explorer

May 14, 2012

Recently I posted an article about Box, an online file storage (and sharing) service. The article, “Log Into Your Box Account From Your Android Device and Get 50 GBs of FREE Online Storage” provided instruction on taking advantage of an offer that Box was promoting for Android users. I definitely took advantage of this offer and got my 50GBs of space.

Box

So far, my experience using Box as an online file storage option, has been an excellent experience. The only thing that I was missing with this service was the ability to access my online files directly from my desktop. To do that would require signing up for one of the paid options to download their desktop software.

From experience, I knew there had to be another method to access these files and it was not long that I came across an article at Instant Fundas (titled: How to Access Box.net Files From Windows Explorer?) , that provided a solution. Not only did this article provide a solution, it also taught me something new about a HTTP protocol extension called WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) that allows users to create, move, or change files directly on a server. Guess what? Box offers WebDAV support, giving me a FREE  solution to my problem. After following the instructions as Instant Fundas, I can now access my Box files directly from Windows Explorer.

If you are currently a Box subscriber, I encourage you to visit Instant Fundas to get step-by-step instructions on how to set this up. It worked great for me and just may be the solution you are looking for, as well.

Literally Hide Sensitive Files In A Picture

May 9, 2012

How many readers out there have ever heard of steganography?

Steganography is not a type of dinosaur: but is a form of security through obscurity. Steganography is often used in the tech world as an obscure way of  storing a file (or files) inside another file such as a picture. As a result, anyone looking at the picture has no idea the sensitive file exists. Mix this concept with encryption and you have very secure method to hide (and secure) sensitive files. The picture appears as it should appear, opens on the computer just like any other picture; and, the only clue given (to the trained eye) that something may be out of the ordinary is that the file size of the picture will appear larger due to the sensitive file being contained within. Pretty neat stuff if you think about it…

So how can you take advantage of steganography?

What got me going on this, is an article posted at I Love Free Software [click here] about a FREE steganography program called Our Secret. It is programs like Our Secret that incites me to find clever ways to use it. I encourage you to read the article at I Love Free Software — Hide files and Messages Inside Images with Our Secret – to get a more detailed walkthrough on using the program.

First off, Our Secret is pretty easy to use and I encourage you to give it a try. Straight from the horses mouth, Our Secret is this:

Our Secret enables you to hide and encrypt files within other files (called carrier files) such as pictures or sound files. This allows you to encrypt sensitive information, while at the same time hiding it in a file that will not look suspicious, so nobody even knows that there is any encrypted information. Typically Our Secret is a three to four step process (depending if you use a password).

Just select the desired ‘carrier file’ (which will hide the information), select what kind of information you want to hide, create a password, and push the ‘hide’ button. After you save the new file, you can erase the one you wanted to hide. The unhide process goes in the same way but vice versa.

Our Secret

One clever way that I found to use Our Secret was this…  I took three documents, used Our Secret to hide the three documents inside a picture. I then uploaded the picture to my box.com account and stored it in my pictures folder. Online, the picture opened just like any other picture; however, encapsulated inside that picture is my hidden document files.

Note: One thing I did not notice is that there is not a portable version of Our Secret which would really make this program handy; however, I did manage to break the program install down with Universal Extractor so that I can carry it on my flash drive. I do need to experiment further to see if this program writes to the registry to determine if it truly can be used as a portable app or not.
