Pin Anything To The Taskbar With Taskbar Pinner

August 30, 2012

Today I came across a one of the kind, really useful tool, called Taskbar Pinner that makes pinning anything to the Windows 7 or Windows 8 taskbar an easy task.

Taskbar Pinner

Taskbar Pinner is portable; therefore, simply download, run, and select from Pin a File, Pin a Folder, Pin a Shell Location (i.e. control panel, recycle bin, etc…) or Pin a Library (such as your document, music, picture or video folder). You can also check “Explorer context menu” which allows you to use Taskbar Pinner in Windows explorer. To read more details on Taskbar Pinner [ click here ]

  • to pin ANYfile regardless of its type;
  • to pin ANYfolder;
  • to pin drive;
  • to pin Control Panel items, all them including some hidden like God Mode/All Tasks, Network Connections;
  • to pin Libraries;
  • to pin Shell Objects like Run command, “Miminze All”, Window Switcher;
  • to pin any drive,all folders and all files via Explorer Context Menu;
  • to pin any folders or files with drag and drop. Drop them on application window.
  • to pin any folders or files via command line:taskbarpinner.exe "path\to\desired\location"

Note:One thing I ran into is that when I went to extract the dowloadable Taskbarpinner zip file (that contains the Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions), I was prompted to overwrite the files.  If that occurs, simply select “no” and the file will extract properly.  Otherwise, the program works as indicated…  Also, if you try to run the Windows 7 version on Windows 8 (and vice versus), the program will crash.

It will definitely save you a considerable amount of time and I can tell you, being familiar with software, the selections they have made have been tried, true and tested.  Great job Gizmos’s…

Infographic Depicting The Growth of the Internet In The Past Ten Years

August 28, 2012

I came across this infographic titled “The Internet – A Decade Later” (at Best Education Sites) that depicts where we were in 2002 in comparison to now (2012). I was an IT Manager at the time when networks and the internet were just ramping up to what it is today (and wireless technology’s was only a dream). I can remember being quite excited over it all, at the time.

Where were you and the internet in 2002?

FREE Software To Monitor Your Broadband Usage

August 27, 2012

If you notice a slowdown in your broadband speed, then this could be a red flag to indicate that something may be going that is consuming your bandwidth. It could be software you installed that is making constant communication to the internet or worse yet it could be a rogue process or service that has installed itself on your computer, as a malware infection.

The software I present today is called Net Guard; and what Net Guard does is give you the ability to monitor your internet connection and broadband usage, to determine what the bandwidth hogs are.

Net Guard

Cucusoft Net Guard includes powerful Bandwidth monitor and Bandwidth meter to help you find who is wasting your bandwidth. As you know, sometime, you didn’t visit internet, but there are still some unknown software using your Broadband in your computer. Normally, you have no idea about them, don’t know who they are, how to monitor them, how to kill the useless program which is biting your bandwidth. Those unknown programs sometime even affect your normal Internet surfing speed a lot and you have to pay the Broadband Bill for them. Those unknown software sometime will make your Broadband Bill exceed its limit, you have to pay the extra fees.

Now, Cucusoft Net Guard can help you fix these problems. It can easily to monitor your broadband status, to find who are using your broadband, how much bandwidth they are using, and more details statistics available, you can make decision by yourself after checking the simple report, keep it or kill it. That means you can see and control who can use your Broadband, who cannot.

During the install of Net Guard you will reach a point where you will have to input an email address and a registration number will be sent to you.  Also, following the install of Net Guard you will find a handy floating bar that allows you to monitor (in real time) your upload and download consumption speeds. This toolbar can be turned “off”.  Overall, Net Guard is a nice utility (especially for FREE) and could be quite helpful in troubleshooting internet connectivity issues and speed; especially if you are tied to a bandwidth limit each month.

Did You Know You Can Easily Send (and Receive) Cell Phone (SMS) Text Messages Using Gmail Chat?

August 24, 2012

I have been finding that many people do not realize that there is an instant messaging (chat) feature in Gmail that lets you send and receive instant messages with other Gmail chat users. This feature is typcially turned on by default.  To make sure it is turned on, click on the gear icon and choose Settings.  Click the Chat tab to determine if chat is on or off.

image

Now that you have discovered Gmail chat, did you know you can send and receive SMS text (cell phone) messages using Gmail chat?

Here’s how to turn the SMS text messaging feature on:

Gmail chat lets you easily send text messages to and from cell phones. If this feature isn’t already enabled on your account, you can enable it by following these steps:

  1. Click the gear icon in the upper right, then select Settings.
  2. Select the Labstab.
  3. Scroll down until you see Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat, select Enable and Save Changes.

Here’s how to use the SMS text messaging feature, in Gmail chat, to send (and receive) text messages:

  1. Enter your contact’s name in the ‘Search or invite friends’ box in Chat, and select Send SMS from the box of options that appears to the right of your contact’s name. Or, if you already have a Chat window open for this contact, just click Options, and select Send SMS.
  2. In the dialog box, enter a phone number in the ‘Send SMS messages to this number’ field. This feature is only launched in selected countries. Click herefor the list of supported countries and operators. If you are not located in one of these countries you can still use it, but you won’t see the SMS option in Chat until you enable it manually in the Chat settings page.
  3. Click Save.
  4. A Chat window appears. Just type your message as you would normally. When you hit Enter, the message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

If your contact replies, the text message response will appear as a reply in Chat. These conversations are stored in your Chat history just like regular chats (but keep in mind that you can’t go off the record while communicating via SMS).

Unlock The Secret Options In Windows 7

August 23, 2012

Most techs have heard of the Windows 7 GodMode where there is a trick to creating a folder and giving it a special name [see here] to enable GodMode. GodMode is a hidden control panel that contains everything, in one place, about Windows 7 in terms of options, settings, customizations, etc…

Getting to GodMode can be a tricky venture for some; however, I came across a nice utility that gives you the ability to enable or disable God Mode in one mouse click. It is called the Windows 7 GodMode ToolSimply download the tool to a folder, unzip the tool and double click on the Windows 7 GodMode Tool file to launch the utility. When the interface loads simply click on “Enable GodMode”.

GodMode

After you click on “Enable GodMode” the tool button will change to “Disable GodMode” and an icon will appear on your desktop that is labelled “GodMode”.  Click on the “GodMode” icon to launch into the GodMode settings.

GodMode

To disable GodMode, simply run the Windows 7 GodMode Tool again and click on “Disable GodMode”.

Use Password Chameleon To Generate A Different Unique Password For Every Site You Use

August 17, 2012

If you are not using some form of software to manage the passwords to your online accounts, then this tells me you are using weak passwords; or you are using the same password for every account; or you are writing down the passwords somewhere. I can go with writing the passwords down, as long as you are using some level of security (like storing them in a locked area), but I will bet you are not doing this. When it comes to computer security and passwords, I have found it is human nature to not take the extra steps to make sure the accounts are protected and have also found that most people really do not understand the importance of it all.

Today, I came across a really unique website that really caught my attention, called Password Chameleon, that is very different than any password manager I ever experienced.  As a matter of fact, it does not get any easier than this.

Password Chameleon

With Password Chameleon you only need to remember one password and the domain name of the account you are accessing.

For example, to access my blog account whatsonmypc.wordpress.com, I enter my secret password (which actually can be easy), then the domain name, which is wordpress.com, then click on “Generate Password”

Password Chameleon

After I click on “Generate Password”, a strong password is then generated.

Password Chameleon

What is cool about Password Chameleon is if I forget the password,  I can go back to the Password Chameleon website, enter my secret password, the domain name, click on “Generate password” to retrieve the same password I created the first time. You can come back anytime to Password Chameleon to get the password. Where the beauty of this lies is that I can retrieve a password for my accounts from any internet enabled computer by simply visiting the Password Chameleon site.

Password Chameleon uses a technique called “hashing” to combine your secret password with the address of the site and produce your password.

  • Passwords are never saved.
  • There is no database of passwords that could be hacked.
  • Passwords are generated on your computer using JavaScript, so nothing is sent over the internet.
  • Password Chameleon uses SHA-1 encryption to generate each password.
  • Passwords are 10 character, 64-bit sequences.
  • Passwords do not contain easily confused characters, such as 0 and O.

I am now using Password Chameleon, in conjunction with my password management software, to generate and keep track of my passwords.

Password Chameleon is a very cool concept that I hope the developers continue to enhance even further. On a further note, you can also download a Password Chameleon app to your windows computer, windows phone, android devices, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers which makes it even easier to manage those passwords.

Access Any File You Need From Your PC From Anywhere With The NEW SkyDrive

August 16, 2012

A hot news item this week in the world of computers and information technology has been the re-design of Microsoft’s SkyDrive from its’ standard file management interface to the more metro look (that is the defacto Windows 8 GUI). If you have a Hotmail (or Outlook.com) account, then you can easily get access to SkyDrive. I highly recommend you take advantage of SkyDrive, because Microsoft is really getting this right.

With SkyDrive, you get 7 GB of free storage with SkyDrive—that’s enough for over 20,000 Office documents or 7,000 photos. For most people, this is plenty of space. But if 7 GB isn’t enough, you can add even more storage for a low yearly fee.

image

It was not the metro look that captured my attention or that you can now upload and store any type of file; instead, it is a very powerful feature in SkyDrive that allows you to remotely access your files and folders on your Windows (or Mac) computer from anywhere you have internet access. For example, if I am at work and I need a document file from my computer at home, I simply log onto SkyDrive account where I am able to see my entire file/folder/drive(s) structure on my computer at home. This sort of reminds me when I used to manage network attached storage devices (NAS), with the end user interface being quite similar to this.

As long as your home computer is “on” and is running the SkyDrive software, you can access any file you need from your home computer—from anywhere.

In fact, you can browse through files just like you would if you were sitting in front of that PC. Want to show someone a photo on that home PC? You can view photo slide shows and videos on that PC from any browser, from any computer.

Fetch files from your Windows PC from anywhere

Here’s how it works, straight from the horses’ mouth:

  1. Download SkyDrive for Windows.
  2. Make sure you leave the box checked during setup that will allow you to “Fetch your files from anywhere.” (You can also choose this later by clicking the SkyDrive icon (SkyDrive icon) in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and clicking Settings. On the General tab, under Fetch files, select Make files on this PC available to me on my other devices, and then click OK.)
  3. Open your browser and sign in to SkyDrive.com.
  4. Your PCs that have SkyDrive for Windows installed will appear in the Computers menu. Choose the computer that has the file you want, and you can view, print, or download the file you forgot.

Increase Your Productivity By Adding Tabs To Windows Explorer

August 15, 2012

If there is a way to increase productivity when performing file management operations, you can always count me in. I guess this is something I inherited from the Norton Commander days.

Today I stumbled on a find that I consider a “real find” that you may be interested in; especially if you are someone that is proficient in working Windows Explorer to perform file and folder operations. It is a third party application, called TabExplorer.

What TabExplorer does is simply this: it adds tabs to Windows Explorer.

TabExplorer

The beauty of a tabbed file manager is that you can toggle between the tabs to perform file operations in a much more effiicient (and quicker manner).  TabExplorer needs some polishing, but I think you will find it makes for a great add-on for Windows Explorer that can be toggled on or off.

Linoit Is The Best Web Based Sticky Notes App

August 14, 2012

This article is a retake on a cloud based sticky notes application, called Linoit, that I absolutely fell in love with. Since my last posting on Linoit back in early 2011, Linoit has developed into a very popular app to the point that it is also now available as an app for the iPhone, iPad and Android platforms. As a matter of fact I use it on my Toshiba Thrive tablet and absolutely love it. This allows me to sync my notes across all of my devices.

Linoit

Years ago when I first experienced electronic sticky notes, I thought WOW…  No more paper notes hanging around my computer monitor.  Most electronic sticky note programs require a software installation to work; until now!  As a result of cloud computing, a web-based virtual sticky notes program, called Linoit, was born. After setting up an account (for FREE) with Linoit, you can access your sticky notes anywhere there is internet service. Linoitworks directly from your web browser within a moveable “canvas” (where you can use your own background image), which is like a user specific bulletin board-like area. With Linoit you can even share sticky notes (and photos) with others.

Learn more about Linoit by watching the video…

There are so many features and options with this program that I encourage to visit the website [ HERE ] ; HOWEVER, there is one feature with Linoit that I think is really cool. Once you sign up for your account, get the “linoit anywhere” bookmarklet. Click on the “lino anywhere” bookmarklet anywhere, anytime, from any website and if you are signed into your Linoit account, your sticky notes will magically appear (overlay with transparent background) on the the page you are visiting. I can’t say I have seen anything like this with any other cloud computing service.  Also, if you use Google Chrome, you can install Linoit as a Chrome app[ HERE ].

If you would like to experience Linoit to see what it is like, you can visit Linoit’s public sticky notes “HOW TO” board [ HERE ].

Put Your Monitor To Sleep With Blacktop

August 10, 2012

I am a fond lover of the simple software utilities that really serve a purpose. Today I came across an application called Blacktop that, with a quick keystroke (Ctrl+Alt+B), will put your monitor into power save mode. In other words using the keystroke provided you can manually (and quickly) put your monitor to sleep (monitor will go blank). This is especially useful in the event you step away from your computer for an extended period of time.

When you install Blacktop, you will see a small icon in the system tray that is the indication that Blacktop is running.  You can set Blacktop to run at system startup by right clicking on this icon and selecting, “Run At Startup”.

Blacktop

Blacktop is available as a 32bit or 64bit application.
