Daily Deal: Save up to 21% on CyberPower UPS System

If you are in a region where power outages often occur, even brief outages, you already know that these outages can result in data loss and damage to computer hardware. To safely protect your computer, it is best practices to invest in a UPS (uninterrupted power supply). A UPS will provide battery backup power to your equipment with enough runtime to allow you to safely shutdown the equipment; especially during extended outages. Today on Amazon I noticed that CyberPower has a UPS system available at a reduced cost that you may want to take advantage of.

Which is the better hard drive? The HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or The SSD (Solid State Drive)

The hard drive is the device inside your computer that stores your personal files and stores the files that work together to operate your computer (such as the Windows Operating System files). Over the years the hard drive has transformed from the HDD mechanical hard disk drive (with high-speed moving parts) to now what is known as the SSD solid-state drive (with no moving parts).

Below is a quick read summary to show how the SSD (Solid State Drive) is really your better option in today’s world of computing; but, both options are still available for purchase and both serve a purpose (i.e. CLICK HERE to see pricing for HDD – CLICK HERE to see pricing for SSD).

HDD = Hard Disk Drive = metal platters/mechanical = 2.5″/3.5″ common size = Large Storage Capacities = Moving Parts = Increased Heat = Degradation of Parts = Louder = Slower = Less Expensive = Good for File Storage

HDD vs SSD

SSD = Solid State Drive = flash / non-mechanical = 2.5″ common size = Smaller Storage Capacities = No Moving Parts = Decreased Heat = Better Longevity = Quieter = Faster = More Expensive (but not by much in comparison).= Great for Primary Storage of the Operating System and Great Upgrade Option for Older PC’s

Good Value On This 12-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip

You will not find a better value or buy for this 12-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip at Amazon. I personally own one of these and can attest to its value. The pros – There are 12 outlets with 4 outlets spaced away from the others for those power supply plugs. Low height (thickness). LED light will illuminate when “on” (which may be a nuisance to many). Has excellent review ratings. The only CON I could come up with is that there is no template available for the screw hole mounts. In my case, I avoided the fuss of that and used heavy duty velcro.  All-in-All, go for it…

Quick Post: Chromebooks vs. Laptops | What’s the Difference?

I am a Windows OS user, as well as a Chrome OS user… I like both operating systems; however there are big differences. These differences are notable when you are shopping for a “Laptop” or “Chromebook”. Which should you choose? Learn more by clicking on the source link below.

Thanks for visiting… Rick @ What’s On My PC

When you hear people talking about Chromebooks as if they were a different species from regular laptops, there is a good reason: Chromebooks are in a class of their own. Yes, they’re similar to ordinary Windows or Mac laptops in many ways, being essentially highly mobile, speedy laptops. But they run a totally different operating system, one that favors those who prefer Google and Android services. Let’s take a look at Chromebooks versus laptops, and if buying a Chromebook is right for you.

My Review of the Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2

The Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2 is a wireless stick that plugs into an HDMI connection (or port) on your television. It is powered via a USB connection, either by your TV or by the included power block. This device, I rate as “excellent” in giving you the ability to wirelessly mirror what you see on your Android phone onto a TV or projector.

Actiontec ScreenBeam Mini 2

The key to using this device is that your Android phone must have mirroring capability (Miracast), which most of the modern day Android phones possess. In other words, when you get this setup (which is very easy – plug and play) you will be able to see what is on your phone on your TV or projector. This allows you to use your phones data connection to view pics, play games, read the news and stream video, such as YouTube, Hulu, Pluto, etc… I do recommend that you make sure you have an unlimited data connection through your cell service before using this device, which most people do these days. The real feature with Screenbeam is that you do not need a wi-fi connection or router for this to work; instead, Screenbeam wirelessly communicates directly with your smartphone.

Why did I purchase Screenbeam? I have an RV, way out in no man’s land, where I have managed to pull in a high-end 3G data signal using a booster. I use Screenbeam connected to the TV in my RV to stream video from my smartphone. It has literally opened up a whole new world in watching TV during the evenings when I am camping. Anything that I can pull down on my smartphone I can watch on the big screen. Screenbeam, so far, for me, has worked flawlessly.

Cost? The Screenbeam Mini 2 will run you around $40. To me, this an inexpensive device that works very well and would serve you for all sorts of purposes; such as using your phone to project a report or video in a conference meeting scenario or for home entertainment (gaming and movies). The selling point to me was that I can do a direct wireless connection where I do not need a wireless router like you do with the Google Chromecast or Amazon’s Fire Stick; pLus, this thing is very portable.

Where can I get the Screenbeam Mini 2?  My recommendation is to purchase it through Amazon (see link below); that way, easy to return if you do not like it, plus you can see the reviews. I can tell you that the Screenbeam Mini 2 is a great device that I am glad (and excited) to have purchased.

ACEPC AK1 Mini PC – Review Update

Purchased the ACEPC AK1 Mini PC back in February; and, as promised, here is a periodic update. I purchased this mini pc to connect to a 32 inch Insignia TV in my garage (my workspace, my cave). So far, so good! I use this PC on a daily basis and usually leave it on all day. At this point, I can recommend using this PC as a desktop computer; providing, you are not running memory intensive software that would tax the cpu and memory. I pretty much use this computer for all that I do (word processing, internet, videos, graphics editing, blogging, etc…) One thing I did, to save internal drive space, is I connected an SSD drive. This Mini PC has an option where you can install a drive (easily) inside the case. Software and files that I use are saved on that drive and use the main drive for pretty much the operating system. After 3 months of hard usage, this mini pc has not given me a minutes problem and with Windows-based PC’s these days, having less than a minutes problem is a miracle.

If interested, check out the ACEPC AK1 Mini PC, at Amazon, by clicking on any of the links below:

Quick Tip: Basic Steps For Setting Up A Wireless Router

I have found that you can follow the basic steps below when setting up and connecting a wireless router to the modem supplied by your internet service provider.

  1. Turn off the modem that was supplied by your internet service provider.
  2. Unplug the modem’s Ethernet cable from the back of your PC (This cable has a connection that is similar to a connection you would find on a landline phone, but slightly larger).
  3. Connect that cable to the WAN or internet port on your new wireless router,
  4. Power on your modem (wait for a minute or two),
  5. Next power on your router (wait for a minute or two),
  6. Now use another Ethernet cable to connect the PC to one of the LAN ports on the wireless router.
  7. Turn on your PC and you should be back online.
  8. To access the wireless router from your wireless devices, such as a laptop, smartphone, tablet, smart-home device, etc…, go into your wireless settings on the device and you should see the name of the wireless router that you just set up. At this point, you will have to enter the wireless password provided by the manufacturer in order to wirelessly access the router and get online.

Example: Back Side View of A Router

I do encourage you to read the instruction manual for any deviations from the above steps and to learn how to change the admin password and how to change the wireless access password key (that you use to connect your wireless devices.).

Quick Tip: What is an UPS?

If you own a desktop computer, which is an investment or an appliance of value, you may want to invest in purchasing a UPS (uninterrupted power supply). An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), offers guaranteed power protection for connected electronics. When power is interrupted, or fluctuates outside safe levels, a UPS will instantly provide clean battery backup power and surge protection for plugged-in, sensitive equipment. Typically, during a power outage, the UPS will keep the equipment stable for a prescribed amount of runtime (depending on the type/model UPS you install). The time element gives you enough time to safely shut down the computer to prevent component damage and loss of data.  Many UPS will come with a bank of outlets. For example, I own the APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector 650 which gives me a total of 8 outlets (4 on each side of the UPS). The important part to note here is that 4 of those outlets provide “battery back up & surge protection” and the other 4 provide on (surge protection).  I typically plug in the computer, monitor, router, and modem into the battery backup side and other less significant devices (such as a printer) in the other surge protection outlet. This particular UPS (APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector 650) is rated for approximately a half hour of runtime during a complete outage.

APC UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector 650

In the end, investing in one of these is like having an insurance policy that will help keep your computer and electronics running smoothly, even during those times when you have power fluctuations and outages.

How To Use The Electric Lines In Your House To Create A Wired Computer Network

Many folks at home are unaware of the technology where, with inexpensive devices, you can create a wired computer network within the confines of your home by using your existing electrical wiring. Setting this up is actually quite simple (plug and play) and be done by using the devices manufactured by TP-Link. Typically one device is plugged into an electrical outlet at your router then plugged (via ethernet cable) to your router. The other device(s) are then plugged into outlets in your home, paired with the main one at the router, then plugged into the computer or components using an ethernet cable.

Wired networking will give you better security, speed, and performance; which, are the main reasons to give this a try. It is one of those networking options that people do not think about and/or are totally unaware of. This eliminates having to run networking cable all through your house and is a good option if your wireless connectivity is poor in certain areas.

Is it possible to use a TV as a computer display and/or as a second display?

Is it possible to use a TV as a computer display and/or as a second display? As I prepare this posting here at What’s On My PC, I am typing this on my computer using a TV (32″) as my primary display and a second TV (26″) set up as the second display. So the answer is YES…; but, what is involved to make this work???

To learn more, I encourage you to read the article, “Can I Use My TV as a Second Display?” at “Ask Leo”… (see source link below) where Leo explains more about using the HDMI connections on your TV and computer and the benefits of using the HDMI connection. It is not as hard as you think.

Most modern TVs and computers can be connected easily, but there are a few issues to be aware of.

Reduce Muscle Strain With An Ergonomic Mouse

Want to reduce muscle strain and decrease discomfort while using the mouse?  If so, there are ergonomically correct options and many choices now available, when selecting an ergonomic mouse. When using a mouse, as we know it, on a regular (repetitious) basis, there is a risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and tendonitis.

To reduce the risk of injury, the solution is to use an ergonomic mouse where the mouse is designed to fit a more natural hand position when used.

To get a good idea of what choices are now available in various price ranges, click on the source link below. I think you are going to be surprised…
