With many people working from home, as we deal with the Coronavirus Pandemic, you may find your network router connection slowing down or even dropping off due to the demands that are being placed on our networks. I recently had an experience where the devices in my home that are dependent on the 2.4GHz band would suddenly, without rhyme or reason, drop off of the network. The devices and computers that were connected to the 5GHz band remained connected. Without getting into the specifics about these two wireless bands, the 2.4GHz spectrum has fewer non-overlapping channels than the 5GHz spectrum; AND, these two bands are common band spectrums (frequencies) that you see associated with today’s routers. Some devices allow you to use both frequencies (such as computers, tablets phones); whereas, other devices are only locked into the 2.4GHz band (such as smart home devices, cameras, etc..). The two bands subsequently work off of channels that the router, typically by default, will auto assign (but, you can manually set the channel by going into the settings of the router).
To deal with the issue I was experiencing I decided to manually set the 2.4GHz on one channel and so far this has resolved my issue. I had a selection of 11 channels. I went with channel 6. To change the channel on your router you will need to find the web address to your router. Typically this address looks something like this (192.168.0.1) and can be found in the manual for your router (or search for it on the web). Once you have the address, go to a computer in your home that is on your home network, enter the address in your web browser. Once connected to the router’s web interface, you will need the username and password to access the settings (which are in the manual or can be found on the internet). Once logged in, look for the 2.4GHz settings. In my case I found that the default channel setting was at “auto” and I changed it to “Channel 6”. While in the settings, I changed my password to something I could remember. You also may have option to change the channel for the 5GHz band. In my case, I left that set at “auto”
So far, all devices are staying connected in my home that are using the 2.4GHz band spectrum. I am thinking at this point that due to the network saturation at my location, at this point in time, the poor performance was due to the fact that too many routers were utilizing the same wireless channel and were fighting for bandwidth.

My wife and I were out shopping at one of “her” favorite box stores when I spotted a device, in a slightly opened box, in the clearance section, that had an RJ45 network cable connected to it. Upon further inspection I noticed there was no booklet or instructions in the box; however, from experience I could tell it was some type of WiFi repeater or signal booster. Price on the device was $4… At this point, I got the other side of my brain out of my pocket (my smartphone) and googled the devices’ name (“Vonets VAP11G-300“) and found the following description:
VAP11G-300 is a safe environmental WiFi signal Repeater. In WiFi bridge and repeater mode, VAP11G-300 can double extend the existing WiFi signal range, also can make sure the safey of WiFi signal. The work theory is: on the edge of the original WiFi hotspot signal coverage, put a VAP11G-300 under “WiFi Repeater mode”, VAP11G-300 will extend the weak WiFi signal receive to normal and safe strength and after optimization and error correction processing to reach the double extension of WiFi signal range under the premise security. It is different from traditional WiFi Signal amplifer—it just amplifies the signal and ignore the WiFi security.
I also found that the “Vonets VAP11G-300” typically sells for around $19 at Amazon…
After determining specifically what the device was, I took advantage of the bargain price and purchased it at the markdown of $4. In my work area in my garage where I do most of my computer work, which is on the other side of the house from my router, I connected the VAP11G-300 to my computer via the RJ45 port. With this device it has several power connection options. In my case I plugged it into one of the USB ports. To configure the device, I went into a web configuration (by the address provided), found my wireless router, connected and voila’, I was up and running. At this point I actually disabled the wireless connection mode on my computer. The VAP11G-300 pulled in and boosted the data signal from my router and I noticed that now my internet connection (and computer) appeared as a normal RJ45 network connected device (when in fact it is using a wireless signal, if that makes any sense). The speed difference from before and after was very noticeable and after running an internet speed test, I nearly doubled my connection speed and was very close to my hardwired cable connection in the house.
A Completely FREE Windows Backup Software Solution…

A Hardware Backup Solution (and Strategy)
Now that you have been given a FREE backup solution, you need something to backup to. Here at “What’s On My PC” I go to a portable backup solution, such as a portable hard drive, to back up my important files (such as documents, photos, and videos). One strategy to consider is to backup your data to the portable drive and if it is really important, store the drive offsite in a safe deposit box. If you can afford it, buy two drives, keep one at home and one at your offsite location and rotate them. It all depends on how important your data is to you; but, the bottom line is that you need to back up your files (you will not regret it).
An economical solution I found on Amazon is the Toshiba Canvio Advance 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0. If you want more choices of portable hard drives (and capacities), then CLICK HERE.

Building a PC remains a daunting endeavor for many, but it doesn’t have to be. Even if you’ve yet to pick up a screwdriver and toss together a few components, this comprehensive guide will make you a PC building master in no time at all.

This is a “Renewed” Windows-based computer… Good buy on this (save $270); but, will be featured TODAY ONLY (December 27, 2019)…
If you are not a “Gamer” or someone that does not use intensive based software products, then the computer reflected below is a good replacement at home for that old Windows 7 Computer. If you are someone that needs more power to the punch, then take a look at this computer (click here)… The computer below, at the time of this posting, was showing very good consumer review based ratings.
If you are in a region where power outages often occur, even brief outages, you already know that these outages can result in data loss and damage to computer hardware. To safely protect your computer, it is best practices to invest in a UPS (uninterrupted power supply). A UPS will provide battery backup power to your equipment with enough runtime to allow you to safely shutdown the equipment; especially during extended outages. Today on Amazon I noticed that CyberPower has a UPS system available at a reduced cost that you may want to take advantage of.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of backing up your personal files. Have a plan (i.e. weekly, daily, etc…); just do it, before disaster hits!
Here is an opportunity to get a really decent external hard drive at about a 20% savings that carries an above-average consumer rating and made by a reputable manufacturer.

I don’t know how long this deal will stay up, but I noticed at Amazon that PNY has some select memory storage devices on sale. You can’t have enough storage and it is always a good idea to look for these devices when you can get them at a bargain.
