Geek Squeaks (#2015-24) FEATURING — Are The Days Of The Traditional “Clamshell” Laptop Numbered? — and MORE GREAT STUFF

September 14, 2015

Are The Days Of The Traditional “Clamshell” Laptop Numbered? BetaNews has a good read on this. My gut is telling me that they may be right on predicting that the future of laptop computers will give away to the detachable keyboard format (with the digitized pen-enabled screen) of the Microsoft Surface device. The future may be now, due that every major hardware vendor is now embracing this technology. Initially, the Microsoft Surface device was largely ignored; but, after three tries (or versions) of Microsoft Surface the vendors (after their own awkward experimentation of multi-purpose notebooks) is now looking at the Microsoft Surface hardware model as a model template to accept and follow. An example of what the detachable 2-in-1 touchscreen laptops look like — CLICK HERE… I would wait awhile before jumping into one of these until the “Surface Like” models appear.

What do you think, will the traditional clamshell laptop give way to the 2-in-1 detachable keyboard format?

Geek Squeaks #2015-4 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring My Take On Windows 10 and MORE…)

July 31, 2015

My Take On Windows 10 – I intentionally did not test or try any of the Windows 10 insider beta (test) versions, prior to the public release. I wanted to see what my first impression would be.

My first impression is this — The Windows 10 upgrade installation on my Windows 7 based notebook computer (older Toshiba) took approximately 45 minutes. During the install it booted 3 times and during each time a screen appeared with a circle in the middle of the screen indicating at what point the installation was at. It was a straight forward and nothing fancy installation (which is the way it should be…).

After the install was completed I was taken straight to the desktop and there it was; the new Start Menu. Folks, in comparison to Windows 8; Windows 10 is like a hybrid between Windows 7 and Windows 8. There are some changes, but they are changes for the bettter. I was up and running and navigating around with no issue. This old Toshiba was as if a breath of fresh air had been blown into it. I can’t wait to the complete the installation on my main desktop computer. My final take on this is, if you have opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10, I recommend that you do it.

Microsoft Windows 10

Do This If You Can’t Wait For Your Windows 10 Upgrade – If you are patiently waiting for your upgrade notification (which could take days and even weeks); there is another option. It is the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.  I am an impatient old geek; therefore, I am using this tool to perform my upgrade. MAKE SURE you read the next paragraph to learn what to expect if you do use the Media Creation Tool.

Using the Media Creation Tool To Upgrade Your Computer From Windows 7 to Windows 10 – I am most certain that these same steps will work to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, as well. Addictive Tips has posted an article that gives a Step By Step Upgrade Process From Windows 7 To Windows 10 …

A Dual Mode Laptop – Switch Between Laptop And Tablet Stand Mode

October 20, 2014

Having experienced some of the Lenovo offerings that are out there these days, I especially have an eye for their Lenovo Flex touchscreen line of laptops.

What is cool about the Lenovo Flex 2 is that it can adapt and transform into whatever you are doing; making it a truly multi-functional device. It can go from being a laptop to a tablet (on a stand).

When you’re relying heavily on the keyboard — drafting documents or working on a spreadsheet, for example — keep your Flex 2 in the classic laptop mode for maximum productivity.  But when you’re focusing on touch applications, web chatting, or enjoying a film or video, flip the screen 300 degrees to enter stand mode.

Once I get something like this in my sights I usually head to Amazon, not only for a price comparison; but, mostly to see what other people are saying about the product.

After looking at the Lenovo Flex flavors they were showing (see here), I ended up looking at the Lenovo Flex 2 15D 15.6 inch model that carries the AMD A8-6410 Quad-Core 2.0 GHz Processor. I know many folks would go for one with the intel processor, but if you want to save green backs, then go with AMD. I have had AMD processors in my main desktop computer(s) for years. I am currently on my third one, with my main desktop computer, for which I am typing this article, is now over 7 years old.

Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8

June 11, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8 – After the release of Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft did make things better for people to navigate around; however, shutting down the PC is still a hidden component (when you are on the desktop side of Windows 8).

To remedy this issue on my Windows 8 computer, I installed a little program called Shutdown8.

Shutdown8

Shutdown8 is available as an install file or a portable app. I went for the portable app version. Once you get it installed, pin the Shutdown8 executable file to your taskbar making it very handy to shutdown your PC.

Not only does Shutdown8 provide convenience in shutting down your PC, it also has the following features:

  • Shuts down/powers off computers at a specified time
  • Users can set the timer with the [+][-] keys or the mouse wheel button
  • Hibernate Mode: Saves the contents from the RAM to a hard disk and shuts down
  • Sleep Mode: Saves the state of the computer to RAM and enters a low-power mode
  • Works well with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

Today’s Geek Squeaks – August 30, 2013

August 30, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1: MGM… If you are into Windows, I am sure you have heard of God Mode, which is the name given to a special folder in Windows where numerous system settings can be accessed and tweaked. Featured today is MyGodMode, which is an application developed to get you to those settings with minimal hassle (see below);

Squeak #2: Did you ever forget a password to an account, but you could still access your account in your browser, because the browser was storing the password. The problem is once the browser’s cache, that stores the password, is cleared you will lose access to your account. If you need to retrieve the password, before this cache is cleared, I am featuring a neat little utility that will let you see what is behind those asterisks or dots in the password box (see below);

Squeak #3: One of my favorite sites, Addictive Tips, recently featured a portable app that allows you to schedule Windows apps (and programs) to launch automatically and at specific time intervals.  Much better and easier than the Windows Task Scheduler (see below); AND,

Squeak #4: Shopping for a laptop computer can be a real pain in the butt.  Eliminate the frustration by simply following the categories as posted below…
