Your Passwords Must Have Length and Complexity

May 30, 2013

What you know about password security is probably wrong, is the title of an article I came across at FierceCIO:TechWatch. It really caught my eye and I think it is important that I pass the most important part of this article on to you:

Passwords that are longer than eight characters are a must, and they should also involve a good mix of upper case characters, numbers and symbols. In addition, a level of randomness is required too, which automatically precludes any word or combination of words found in the dictionary – FierceCIO:TechWatch.

There are so many people that I know who use very simple passwords and do not ever change them. It is a hard sell to get them to change there way of thinking and to change their passwords. If anything, please use the advice given above for those accounts that are super important to you! If you don’t, you are postured for potential compromise of the account.

The Start Menu Will Be Back In Windows 8.1. Is This An Upgrade or a Downgrade?

May 29, 2013

One thing that I have learned over the years is to try and look at Computer Information Technology through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU!. When Microsoft released Windows 8, which by the way is an excellent operating system, they forgot to look at it through the eyes of the end user, which is YOU! For me, it was another toy to play with and I made myself understand it (because that is what I do); but, 99 percent of the people who use computers are not like me.  99 percent of these people were finally getting somewhat in the groove of learning and navigating Windows and then Microsoft dropped the Windows 8 bombshell that really threw people off. I daily hear the complaints about the Start Menu being missing and that you have to jump through a hoop to get to the desktop.

I do have some good news about Windows 8.  In the very near future you are going to see an upgrade to Windows 8 (which will be FREE), called Windows 8.1, that in a sense is actually a downgrade.

Windows 8.1 Start Menu

You need to jump over to Paul Thurott’s Supersite for Windows to read about the changes that are going to occur when the Windows 8 downgrade or I mean upgrade occurs.  The biggest change is that Microsoft is giving in and is going to return the Start Menu and will give you the option of booting to the desktop instead of the Metro Start Screen. They are also planning some other neat changes…

Bing vs. Google – Bing It On

May 28, 2013

Back in May of 2009 I posted an article titled, “bing – Microsoft’s New Search Engine”. My intent of the article was to let people know that Microsoft had created their own version of a search engine that would be a main competitor to Google and Yahoo. I was actually impressed with Bing (back then) and I still am today; HOWEVER, following that article I received over 100 comments asking me (as if I was the creator of Bing) to remove Bing from their computers. Apparently Microsoft, as part of their marketing strategy of Bing (in a viral type of way), was making Bing show up on people’s computers in various ways and then making it difficult for people to then remove Bing from their computers. To me, not a very good way for people to develop a warm and fuzzy feeling for something.

I think Microsoft learned from that strategy and has been trying to get people to use Bing by sensationalizing it through various media sources (such as through TV commercials).  Today I happened across another attempt by Microsoft to bring Bing home and to draw attention to the power (and beauty) of the Bing Search engine.

Go to, BING IT ON, where you can do a side-by-side search analysis of the Bing Search Engine and the Google Search Engine. The site is sort of competitive in nature and gives you the opportunity to perform searches, then rate the outcome, as to which performed better. If anything, this is a nice source to perform a more extensive search using two very powerful search engines.
