Geek Squeaks #2015-11 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring: A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password and MORE)

August 11, 2015

A Quick Study On The Anatomy Of A Good Password – I plucked the information below from my work security notices about passwords and thought it would be good to share with my readers. It pretty much sums it up nicely about the creation and the composition of a good password.

Did you know the longer the password, the harder it is to crack? Consider a 12-character password or longer. Things to avoid: Names, places, dictionary words. Mix it up. Use variations on capitalization, spelling, numbers, and punctuation. Most importantly, don’t save passwords or use “remember me” especially on public computers.  Make sure your computer is secure.  Never give your password out to anyone and don’t post your password in plain sight.

From my experience I have found that people that use computers (and other devices) on the personal level (such as at home) use very weak passwords, never change them and are very liberal on who has access to those passwords. To solve this problem, I highly recommend that you use a password manager such as S10 Password Vault that will help you manage, organize, store and generate your passwords.

Have you ever tried going offline for days at a time? I don’t know if I could detach myself from my devices. I am serious, I have never tried it. Found this blog post at the Huffington Post “Why You Need To Go Offline For A Week” where the author explains that “you go completely offline (no internet allowed at all) and off grid (so no phone calls, texts etc.) to have a complete break from technology and communication with anyone you’re not physically with”. I encourage you to read this article to see his end results… I definitely need to go offline, get off the grid and go to hermit land.

TECH DEAL – WD My Passport Ultra 2TB Portable External USB 3.0 Hard Drive with Auto Backup

November 30, 2014

Noticed in my Sunday flier (for Cyber Monday), the Western Digital My Passport Ultra 2TB Portable External USB 3.0 Hard Drive with auto backup for $99.00. Did some research on the internet and Amazon has this drive for the same price with FREE SHIPPING. The nice thing about these drives is that they are truly a portable drive. I currently own an older Western Digital Portable drive that has served me well; however, this one may be the replacement. This drive comes in a variety of colors (red, black, blue and gray) and is USB 3.0 compatible and backward compatible to USB 2.0.

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On A HP Computer (following a hard drive failure).

April 20, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] A Windows 8.1 Update Install Marathon On An HP Computer (following a hard drive failure) – This squeak is from a personal experience that I will keep short; therefore, a chopped up description.

Windows 8.1 Update

Have you ever ran a marathon and you thought there was no end? To me the experience below was unbelievable and was like running a marathon.

My Father’s All-In-One HP computer, running Windows 8.1, still under warranty, had a hard drive failure. Called HP, patched to India, on the phone for an over an hour to run the diagnostics and listen to them trying to scare me into buying the extended warranty. Hard drive failure confirmed, patched to another person in India who kept telling me how wonderful I was. Hard drive shipped (within 3 days), and installed (in less than 15 minutes); then, the real fun began.

The drive shipped with HP’s Windows 8 recovery software.  My objective was to get the machine up and running, then upgrade to Windows 8.1…

Long story short, started at 6 pm and finished after 1 am.  Over 7 hours to run the recovery, download all of the Windows updates, and download/install Windows 8.1.  The time involved did not include the other tweaking required to get my Father’s PC back to the point he originally was at (i.e. printer install, third party software installs, cosmetic changes, etc…).

I am definitely, at my next visit, going to image the disk…  Has anyone else experienced this?

GEEK SQUEAKS – Use Windows 8.1’s Quick Access Menu To Shutdown Windows

March 5, 2014

What gets me about Windows 8 and 8.1 is that you have to go on an Easter egg hunt to find the most basic of functions that we commonly use in Windows. I really think Microsoft has a lost sight of what the end user’s needs are and have never heard of the K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid).

For example, anyone who has not experienced Windows 8 or 8.1 will immediately discover that they cannot easily find a shutdown button in order to turn the computer “off”. Recently I set up a Windows 8 box for my parents and I ended up creating a shutdown button on the taskbar so that they would not have to go digging for this function. To the home based end user, these sort of things can be a challenge.

For others out there, in an effort to help you out…  If you have upgraded to Windows 8.1, the easiest way to get to the Shutdown or Signout options, is to right mouse click on the Start Button which is located in the bottom left corner of the screen (or on the very left side of the task bar at the bottom of the screen). If you are not seeing the Start Button, hover your mouse pointer in the bottom left corner and the button will appear.  When the button appears, right mouse click on the Start Menu button and a menu will pop up.  This is called the Quick Access Menu.

Quick Access Menu

One the menu pops up you will see an option for Shutdown or Sign Out; and, if you hover your mouse pointer over that option another menu will appear to the side giving you the ability to Sign Out, Sleep, Shut Down or Restart.

This may sound like a lot, but once you accomplish this feat it will become second nature; PLUS, the bonus to this you will know how to get to many other features in Windows via the Quick Access Menu such as the Control Panel, Task Manager, File Explorer, etc…

Cryptolocker Ransomware: What You Need To Know

@ Malwarebytes

Cryptolocker Ransomware is the first type of malware that I have ever seen where, once on your system, it will look for file extensions to files that you commonly use and will encrypt them so that you cannot access them (unless you have the private decryption key). In essence, your files are held hostage and you can only get them back by paying $300 for the decryption key.

image

Cryptolocker will encrypt users’ files using asymmetric encryption, which requires both a public and private key.

The public key is used to encrypt and verify data, while private key is used for decryption, each the inverse of the other… READ MORE

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1 – (My Streaming Radio Favorite): Can’t explain it, but got up this morning (at 5 AM) and started the day off with some classic rock. My favorite online music service, which is a search engine of sorts, is RadioTuna. You can even download their desktop player app or embed their radio widget into your site (SEE BELOW);

Squeak #2 – (Arranging and Pinning Tabs In Google Chrome): Decided today to find you a short tutorial on how to arrange and pin tabs in Google Chrome. Many folks are unaware of this feature which can be quite handy. For example, the RadioTuna site that I mentioned in Squeak #1, I simply pinned the site so that I could listen to my music and would not accidentally close the site’s tab (SEE BELOW);

How To Pin and Arrange Tabs In Google Chrome

@ Google

You can easily rearrange the tabs at the top of your browser window.

To reorder your tabs, click a tab and drag it to different position along the top of the browser window.

Rearrange tabs

To move a tab into a new window, click and drag the tab down past the address bar. You’ll see a thumbnail of the tab you’re moving. Similarly, to move the tab to a different window, click and drag the tab from its original window to the top of the destination window. The tab should pop in automatically.

Drag tabs

If you don’t want a particular tab to be moving around, you can pin the tab to the left of your browser window. Right-click the tab and select Pin tab. You can tell that a tab is pinned if it’s smaller in size and displays just the site’s icon.

Besides the tips listed above, you can take advantage of many keyboard shortcuts available for windows and tabs in Google Chrome.

Today’s Geek Squeaks – September 7, 2013

September 7, 2013

A summary of Today’s Geek Squeaks:

Squeak #1: I cannot stress the importance of backing up your personal files and having a backup strategy in place. There are numerous (FREE) backup programs out there, but the one I rely on is FreeFileSync (which is available as a full install or as a portable app);

Squeak #2: If you are A T-Mobile customer and are currently subscribed in one of their legacy value plans (under the 2 year contract agreement), you may want to look into migrating to their Simple Choice plan which starts with unlimited talk, text, and web (including up to 500 MB of high-speed data) on their advanced nationwide network. The reason I bring this up is that I took advantage of the migration, gained web access on my wife’s phone (my phone already had it), at the same cost I was paying for the value plan. When my contract expires I will simply remain in the Simple Choice plan and not be tied to any contract (see below);

Squeak #3: We all agree that the clarity of HDTV (high definition) is awesome and that nothing can beat it, right?  Wrong! Going to teach you something here. The next buzzword out there is 4K TV… It is HDTV on steroids (see below); AND,

Squeak #4: A 3 TB external, portable hard drive, that boasts military-grade protection against water, pressure, vibration, and dust. The price will surprise you (see below)…

You’ll Never Want to Stop Watching 4K TV

That means it has four times as many pixels and has a resolution of 3840 pixels x 2160 lines.  You need no wires with this drive, at all.  It has a built-in rechargeable battery that will give you up to 10 hours life.  Imagine jumping in the car, powering the Wireless Plus up to stream movies to the kids’ tablets.
