Geek Squeaks #2015-6 @ What’s On My PC (Featuring – Did You Know Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer?)

August 4, 2015

Windows 10 Is Sharing Your Computer By Default – I found this article on PCWorld (How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC’s bandwidth to update strangers’ systems) that explains how Microsoft is a using a new peer-to-peer (P2P) delivery update mechanism (in Windows 10) that turns your Windows 10 PC (by default) into a server for distributing updates to other machines.

Hmmm…  I’m not liking the sound of this. Anyhow, the setting or toggle to turn this off is buried in the update and security settings.  CLICK HERE to learn how to turn this off.

win10 updates advanced options

Need advice for buying a Smartphone? – I am pretty seasoned when it comes to computers and smartphones, but when it comes to shopping for either (especially smartphones) I soon become discombobulated (in a state of confusion). To help you folks out there looking for a smartphone, be sure to read Best Android smartphones for work and play (Aug 2015 edition) at ZDNet….

Make Sure You Check Out This Screen Capture Program – I use screen capture utilities on a daily basis and would be lost without one. A new kid on the block recently to me is ShareX. This utility is being updated regularly and the most recent update allows you to either perform a full installation or the option to install the program as a portable app. Very nice screen capture program that does not disappoint. Best thing about ShareX is that it is FREE, Open Source and there are no embedded advertisements.

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10 – As a reminder, if you need to reinstall Windows 10 (for whatever reason), make sure you are prepared.  CLICK HERE to create your own Windows 10 installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD.

RedLaser Barcode and QR Scanner — Shop Smarter – Nice Android App that was rated as a top shopping app by US Today, The New York Times, CNN Money, PC Magazine and Smart Money magazine. RedLaser searches millions of products across thousands of online and local retailers to find the best prices…

Harness The Energy Of The Sun To Light Your Night – Check out this outdoor LED motion sensored solar light for less than 15 bucks….

Use Jolicloud Drive To Manage Your Online Drive Accounts In One Place

November 27, 2014

Some of you may have heard of the Jolicloud OS that originally established its’ roots back in 2009 with the intent of using the infinite power of the cloud to pull all your online apps together in a very nice interface that could be accessed in your web browser. The original concept (back then) was actually ahead of its’ time.  Since that time, the Jolicloud OS has ceased to exist; however, the developers at Jolicloud have now given us Jolicloud Drive that runs in your web browser.

Jolicloud Drive

Jolicloud Drive is a new way to manage your online storage, from some of the most reputable sources out there (such as Dropbox Copy, Box, Google Drive); ALL, in one place. In my testing of Jolicloud Drive, I found that setting up the various online drive accounts you may have with Jolicloud Drive was very easy to do. I also found, compared to some of the other similar type of cloud apps out there, Jolicloud Drive is a fast loader that has a built in file viewer and has file sharing capability. The only drawback with the FREE account is that you cannot copy or move files from one drive account to the other; but, in my case I can live without that feature.

Also, if you do decide to use Jolicloud Drive, dig a little deeper in the interface and you will find Jolicloud Library (that is currently in beta) where you can pull in a variety of services (such as YouTube, Feedly, Flickr, etc..); ALL, in one place. I will be following Jolicloud on both of these online cloud app services…

Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day)

June 30, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Periodically Change The Background Image On Your Computer (like every hour or every day) – You may have figured out that in Windows 7 and Windows 8 you have the ability to setup a screensaver that will display your photos and images on your computer as a slideshow (when the computer goes idle for a preset period of time).  The problem with this is that it is limited in what you can do. Actually screensavers are really a thing of the past (that was designed to save your screen from burn in).

If you really want something that I consider an awesome piece of software, that is periodically updated (and improved), I encourage you to take a look at John’s Background Switcher (aka: JBS).

John’s Background Switcher

What does John’s Background Switcher do?  John best describes it as this: “JBS sits in your system tray (down by the clock) and changes your background at the time interval of your choosing. You tell it where to get pictures from and how to show them – maybe you just want to see one photo at a time or maybe you’d like to see a ‘Snapshot Scrapbook‘ of photos thrown across your desktop. It’s up to you and you never know what’s coming next!”

Take a look at John’s Background Switcher; and, that dull boring computer background will be transformed into a beautiful display that makes good use of your images (and photos) with the ability to pull images from various sources on the internet.  Get it here (for FREE)!

Learning About Secure Boot In Windows 8

May 20, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Learning About Secure Boot In Windows 8 – This geek squeak is about a feature, called Secure Boot, that is built into the firmware architecture of the newer computers that make sure that your PC boots using only software that is trusted by the PC manufacturer.  When the PC starts, the firmware checks the signature of each piece of boot software, including firmware drivers (Option ROMs) and the operating system. If the signatures are good, the PC boots, and the firmware gives control to the operating system. From what I have read, Microsoft had encouraged the computer manufacturers to put this in place, as a security measure to prevent a Windows 8 computer from being compromised.

The problem I experienced with this, not working on computers as much since my retirement, is that I did not know about Secure Boot. I had attempted to boot a Windows 8 based (newer) PC from a third party DVD called Hiren’s Boot CD and the PC would not allow the CD to perform the boot process. I was in and out of the BIOS to make sure I had the CD/DVD drive in line to be the first boot device and it would not boot from the CD/DVD (or USB drive) due to the Secure Boot feature.  The PC, during the boot process, would look at the CD/DVD (or USB drive), BUT as indicated in the first paragraph Secure Boot did not recognize the signature and would bypass the boot disk and try to boot into Windows.

The workaround I found to this is that in the BIOS of this particular PC, I was able to disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot. After I performed this task, the PC booted from the boot CD/DVD (or USB Drive). The process of disabling this feature varies, depending on the make and model of your computer. I encourage you to research this through your computer manufacturer.

To learn more about this and to validate my findings, please read Secure Boot Overview (at Microsoft) and Disabling Secure Boot.

LIMITED TIME ONLY – Rack Up Free Gigabytes Of Online Storage Space

January 15, 2014

There are numerous online file storage options out there and the competition is fierce. I recently came across another NEW player in the field (called COPY), that offers (for FREE) an enticing 15 GB (or more) of online storage space to new accounts.

It doesn’t stop there… To celebrate the launch of COPY, they are offering 5 GB of additional space for every person that is referred to their service. The person who takes advantage of the referral also gets a 5 GB bonus on top of the 15 GB (for a total of 20 GB). From what I am reading, there is no limit to the number of referrals and you must install one of their apps (desktop or mobile) to take advantage of this opportunity in order to be credited for the 5 GB bonus.

To help me test this out; and, to help me add to my 15 GB amount, please click the link below to sign-up for your own 15 GB COPY account and install one of their apps (desktop or mobile). You should also receive the additional 5 GB bonus for signing up through this link. I have no idea how long this offer will last…

ES File Explorer File Manager

I cannot rave enough about the Android app called ES File Explorer Manager. If you need an app to manage the files on your Android device, this is the one to get. What has sold me on ES File Explorer is the networking capabilites that is built into the app (such as LAN, Cloud, FTP and Bluetooth). For example, instead of installing separate apps for your online file storage accounts, you can access those accounts through ES File Explorer (accounts such as the popular GDrive, Box, Drop Box, & SkyDrive). What I especially like is that I can access the shared files and folders on my desktop PC to move files to and from my Android Devices (and the computer).

image

ES File Explorer is a free, full-featured file and application manager. It functions as all of these apps in one: file manager, application manager, task killer, cloud storage client (compatible with Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, Box.net, Sugarsync, Yandex, Amazon S3, and Ubuntu One), FTP client, and LAN Samba client.

It provides access to pictures, music, video, documents, and other files on both your Android devices and your computers.

Storing and Opening Password Protected PDF Files Online Using Google Drive and SkyDrive

February 14, 2013

If you are concerned about security and storing personal document type files online, you may want to consider converting the document file to the PDF format, then password protecting the PDF file. Password protection of online files is one of the most requested features out there.

What I stumbled across, through experimentation, is that Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive can handle and open password protected PDF files, using their built-in (online) viewers. When you go to open a password protected PDF file using either of these services, you will be prompted for the password, and the PDF file will be opened online, without downloading, using either of these services.

image

This gives you an additional level of security protection when storing or sharing files using either of these services’ PLUS, the convenience of keeping the file online (and not downloading it). These were the only two file storage (and sharing) services I tested, where this will work; however, there may be other services, as well, that can handle or open a password protected PDF file. I also found that you need to be using a modern web browser, as well.

I know you are probably wondering, how do I convert my file to the Adobe PDF format and how do I password protect it?  The easiest way to do this is to download the FREE Nitro PDF Reader, which has a built in a PDF creator (or printer).

After you have downloaded and installed the Nitro PDF Reader, you will notice that when you go to print a document, you will see that a new printer is on the list called “Nitro PDF Creator (Reader)”.  If you want to convert the document to an Adobe PDF file, simply select the printer labeled “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader”). Basically anything that can be printed on your computer to a regular printer can be printed to “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader)”, including image files, spreadsheets, Powerpoint slides, etc…

image

Using Nitro PDF Reader you also have the ability to password protect  any PDF file you desire to create. When you go to print on your computer, the print dialog box typically appears. When it appears, select the “Nitro PDF Creator 2 (Reader)”, then click on and select “Preferences”.

image

Once you select preferences, the “Printing Preferences” dialog box appears. You will then notice a tab labeled “PDF Security”.  Click on that tab, click on “Require a password to open the document”, enter the desired password, then click on the “OK” button, then click on “Print” to generate (and create) a password protected PDF version of the document.

image

I know this may seem like a lot of steps, but really it is a cakewalk.  After you have created the password protected PDF file, then simply upload the file to either Google Drive or SkyDrive. Your file can now be stored and opened online, with the additional security of password protection.

MediaFire App Now Available For Android

January 18, 2013

MediaFire is an online file storage and sharing service that most computer users at home are not familiar with. With MediaFire you are given 50GB’s of space (for FREE) with a 200 MB file upload size limit. Compared to the other online storage services (which typically offer much less FREE storage space), MediaFire is very generous in their offering. I have maintained an account with MediaFire for nearly 2 years and have never experienced an issue.

MediaFire

The complaint you will hear coming from people about MediaFire is that they will remove your account is your account is inactive. There is some truth to this; however, the rule is that if you must access the MediaFire API (your account) from either the Web, your Mobile platform or your desktop platform at least once per year and if you do that, your account will never be removed.  This is a pretty easy rule to follow; especially, that you are getting 50 GBs of online storage space.  If your account is in jeopardy you will receive sufficient notice via the email account you signed up with.

The one downfall to MediaFire, that I was experiencing, was no Android App available to access and manage my MediaFire files from my tablet. This has all changed within the past couple days (prior to the writing of this article).  MediaFire now has an Android mobile app available in the Google Play Store that can be downloaded to your Android phone or tablet.  You can get the MediaFire App [HERE] .

The MediaFire mobile app lets you access all your documents, photos, and videos from anywhere. Securely store, organize, and share all your data on the web and through your Android device.

MediaFire Mobile App

Features:

• Keep all your important files at your fingertips.
• View docs, spreadsheets, presentations, video, and listen to audio.
• Take and upload pictures and videos directly in the MediaFire app.
• Upload Android gallery images.
• Create and manage folders of files.
• Share files on the go via email, SMS, through other Android apps, and with copy and paste links.
• Quickly search all your MediaFire files and folders.

MediaFire Android App:  Requires Android OS 2.2 or higher

Access SkyDrive From Any Android Smartphone And Tablet Running Android 2.3+ Or Later.

September 4, 2012

Folks, if you are looking for a nice, dependable and easy to use online file storing (and sharing) service, I am highly recommending Microsoft’s SkyDrive. With SkyDrive you will get 7 GBs of space for FREE and can opt in to purchasing additional space if need be. This service continues to get better and better all the time and has become my main online file storage service.  I encourage you to visit the link above to learn more about SkyDrive.

As this service continues to evolve, Microsoft recently made announcement that a SkyDrive app has been developed exclusively for Android 2.3 or later.

SkyDrive for Android

SkyDrive for Android

So, if you have an Android based phone or tablet AND you are a SkyDrive user, this app is a must-have app.  I have been testing it on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet and it has performed flawlessly. I even have SkyDrive setup to access the files (and drives) on my main PC anywhere I have internet access (see recent article, Access Any File You Need From Your PC From Anywhere With The NEW SkyDrive). This option alone is like having my main PC tethered to my tablet.

With SkyDrive for Android, you can now easily access and share files on the go. You can also upload photos or videos from your phone to SkyDrive.

• Access all of your SkyDrive content including files shared with you.
• View recently used documents.
• Choose multiple photos or videos to upload from your phone.
• Share your files and photos – send a link in email or in another app.
• Open your SkyDrive files in other Android apps.
• Manage your files – delete, or create new folders.

Access Any File You Need From Your PC From Anywhere With The NEW SkyDrive

August 16, 2012

A hot news item this week in the world of computers and information technology has been the re-design of Microsoft’s SkyDrive from its’ standard file management interface to the more metro look (that is the defacto Windows 8 GUI). If you have a Hotmail (or Outlook.com) account, then you can easily get access to SkyDrive. I highly recommend you take advantage of SkyDrive, because Microsoft is really getting this right.

With SkyDrive, you get 7 GB of free storage with SkyDrive—that’s enough for over 20,000 Office documents or 7,000 photos. For most people, this is plenty of space. But if 7 GB isn’t enough, you can add even more storage for a low yearly fee.

image

It was not the metro look that captured my attention or that you can now upload and store any type of file; instead, it is a very powerful feature in SkyDrive that allows you to remotely access your files and folders on your Windows (or Mac) computer from anywhere you have internet access. For example, if I am at work and I need a document file from my computer at home, I simply log onto SkyDrive account where I am able to see my entire file/folder/drive(s) structure on my computer at home. This sort of reminds me when I used to manage network attached storage devices (NAS), with the end user interface being quite similar to this.

As long as your home computer is “on” and is running the SkyDrive software, you can access any file you need from your home computer—from anywhere.

In fact, you can browse through files just like you would if you were sitting in front of that PC. Want to show someone a photo on that home PC? You can view photo slide shows and videos on that PC from any browser, from any computer.

Fetch files from your Windows PC from anywhere

Here’s how it works, straight from the horses’ mouth:

  1. Download SkyDrive for Windows.
  2. Make sure you leave the box checked during setup that will allow you to “Fetch your files from anywhere.” (You can also choose this later by clicking the SkyDrive icon (SkyDrive icon) in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and clicking Settings. On the General tab, under Fetch files, select Make files on this PC available to me on my other devices, and then click OK.)
  3. Open your browser and sign in to SkyDrive.com.
  4. Your PCs that have SkyDrive for Windows installed will appear in the Computers menu. Choose the computer that has the file you want, and you can view, print, or download the file you forgot.

Access Your Box (Cloud Storage) Files Directly From Windows Explorer

May 14, 2012

Recently I posted an article about Box, an online file storage (and sharing) service. The article, “Log Into Your Box Account From Your Android Device and Get 50 GBs of FREE Online Storage” provided instruction on taking advantage of an offer that Box was promoting for Android users. I definitely took advantage of this offer and got my 50GBs of space.

Box

So far, my experience using Box as an online file storage option, has been an excellent experience. The only thing that I was missing with this service was the ability to access my online files directly from my desktop. To do that would require signing up for one of the paid options to download their desktop software.

From experience, I knew there had to be another method to access these files and it was not long that I came across an article at Instant Fundas (titled: How to Access Box.net Files From Windows Explorer?) , that provided a solution. Not only did this article provide a solution, it also taught me something new about a HTTP protocol extension called WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) that allows users to create, move, or change files directly on a server. Guess what? Box offers WebDAV support, giving me a FREE  solution to my problem. After following the instructions as Instant Fundas, I can now access my Box files directly from Windows Explorer.

If you are currently a Box subscriber, I encourage you to visit Instant Fundas to get step-by-step instructions on how to set this up. It worked great for me and just may be the solution you are looking for, as well.

FREE – Unlimited Image (Photo) Sharing and Storage for an Unlimited Time

April 11, 2012

There are numerous image (photo) sharing and storage sites out there, but I ventured across an image sharing (and storage) service called imgbox, that really caught my attention!

imgbox

The Pro’s: Easy to use; image sharing via URL links; inline hotlinking (great for us bloggers); fast upload speed, batch uploads; 10 mb max file size (jpg, gif, png); unlimited storage for an unlimited time; can name (edit) galleries, can individually select and move images from one gallery to another; and once a gallery of images load you can scroll the images either horizontal (i.e. previous or next) or simply use your mouse wheel to scroll vertically.

The Con’s: Actually I only noticed one fault. Unless I am missing something; and if I am, please let me know. I did not see a method to batch download my images. You can capture the share codes for the images to individually download an image, but no easy method noticed to perform a batch downloads.

Overall, the fact that you have unlimited storage space for an unlimited time; imgbox is looking pretty good to me!

An Online File Sharing and Storage Service to Seriously Consider Called 4shared

January 9, 2012

Is it just me or are we going through a technology change with these tablet computers like never seen before? As a result, and being an owner of a tablet pc (Toshiba Thrive), I am now really looking at the online file storage options that will enable me to reliably post, share, stream and retrieve files from a source in the cloud. Recently I put up two posts about Microsoft’s Live SkyDrive that you should consider for online file storage:

SkyDrive – Your Password Protected Hard Drive in the Cloud

Ways to Sync Your SkyDrive Files To Your Computer, Tablet and Smartphone

4sharedToday, I want to share with you another online file sharing and file storage service that I have been testing out and have been quite pleased with. It is called 4shared .

4shared

4shared will give you 10GBs of space right off the bat; plus another 5GBs, when all is said and done. What I found with this service is that they really have made an effort to cover all bases to ensure that you can access, share, and store your files anywhere there is internet service and from just about any platform (whether it be your desktop, tablet PC or smartphone). The features of this service is too numerous to list and if you are interested in seeing a comparison of their paid service, versus their FREE service, then [ click here ] . I think you will find that the FREE service will meet your needs.

What I like about 4shared is that they have an android app to perform file operations from my Tablet PC and another android app to stream music from my 4Shared account to my Tablet. The various interfaces that 4Share provides to access your files, whether it be their desktop syncing app or file manager, their online interface or their mobile file manager apps; I found all of them very easy to navigate and understand. Mobile apps are available for Symbian, Blackberry, Android, and iPhone .

If you have any questions about 4shared, I encourage you to visit their FAQ (frequently asked questions) page [ here ]. Overall, I have been using the daylights out of this service, especially the music search, storage, streaming and sharing functions.
