Here is how Google Maps tracks your every move | Popular Mechanics

Google Maps keeps a detailed history of your movements, which might feel extremely creepy (like you have a robotic stalker), however, it happens regardless of whether you’re aware or not.

Not everyone is comfortable with Google keeping their information for this long, so here is how you can change the settings to limit how long this information is stored:

  • Open Google Maps on iPhone or Android.
  • Tap the menu bar on the top-left of the app.
  • Choose “Your Timeline.”
  • Tap the three dots on the top-right of the screen.
  • Choose “Settings and privacy.”
  • Select “Automatically delete location history.”
  • Change the setting from “Keep until I delete manually” to “Keep for 18 months” or “Keep for 3 months.”

I often drive the interstate in my area. This benefit being introduced by Google Maps will be of benefit when it comes to hazards and slowdowns. Speed Traps is not of my concern, due I typically set the cruise to stay within the means of the speed limit. I have found, as vehicles become more technologically advanced and safer, driver’s are taking more risks, such as exceeding the speed limit by at much as 15 to 20 mph….

This week, however, Google announced the next best thing: Starting immediately, drivers will be able to report hazards, slowdowns and speed traps right on Google Maps.

Share Your Real-Time Location From Google Maps

SOON, you will be able to share your real-time location from Google Maps on both Android and iOS.  The people you share this with will be able to track your location on Android, iPhone, and on the web (from any computer). This may be useful in tracking the kids; letting others know where you are on that long vacation; tracking that lover of yours’ (LOL), etc… You can read more about this on the Google Maps Blog by clicking on the source link below.

Whenever you want to let someone know where you are, just open the side menu or tap the blue dot that represents where you are. Tap “Share location” and then select who to share with and how long to share—and you’re done! You can share your real-time location with your Google contacts, or even share with friends and family by sending a link on your favorite messenger apps. When you’re sharing your location, the people you’ve chosen to share with will see you on their map. And you’ll see an icon above the compass on your own map reminding you that you’re actively sharing your location. You can change your mind and stop sharing at any time—it’s entirely up to you.
