Check Out The New Apps Tab In Google’s Mobile Search

May 12, 2016

When performing a google search on your mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc.); Google now gives you a search tab to look for apps. Of course you can go to Google Play to do the same thing, but this is pretty convenient; especially, if you are into apps (and software) as I am…

How To Determine If Your Website Is Mobile-Friendly

May 1, 2015

Let’s face it, our mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) have become an attachment to our self. As a result, when we use the web browser on these devices we want the websites to load and fit the screen size without having to make adjustments. Web sites that are able to automatically make these adjustments are known as mobile-friendly sites. I know myself, if I visit a site on my smartphone and it is difficult to read and navigate, I typically will not revisit the site.

How important is this? If your site is not mobile-friendly (not formatted to fit the screen) there is a possibility your Google PageRank will be affected (read this). Of course site content is a major factor in maintaining a high PageRank; however, Google is now also factoring mobile friendliness into this mix, as well. How To Determine If Your Site Is Mobile-Friendly

If you want to determine if your site (or any site for that matter) is mobile-friendly, I encourage you to take the Mobile-Friendly Test at the Google Developers web site.

This test will analyze a URL and report if the page has a mobile-friendly design.

Learn more about the mobile-friendly criteria and how it may affect Google’s search results by reading our blog post.

Make Google Your Personal Dictionary

May 26, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Make Google Your Personal Dictionary – One of my favorite Google Search tips is how to use the dictionary feature that is available in Google. It is quite simple, faster than grabbing a dictionary off of the shelf, and is one of the most overlooked tips out there.

Simply visit Google’s Search Page and type in the word define followed by a colon and the word you wish to get a definition. For example, if you typed define:computer you would get a result similar to what you see below.

[COMPUTER SECURITY] Don’t fall for tech support scammers offering costly PC cleanup ‘solutions’ – We’re all familiar with how telemarketers occasionally interrupt our lives, often at the most inopportune times. However, even more upsetting is receiving an unexpected phone call claiming that your PC has been infected with viruses and can be cleaned only for a hefty fee. It’s called Daydream, and it’s a quick, easy way to customize your Android device’s charging/docking screen to display practically anything you want… @greenbot

Using Google Search As A Calculator

April 26, 2013

There are many instances what I write about here on the blog is from personal experience. Today, at my retirement job, we had to complete a purchase order in quick fashion and I needed to perform some math calculations to determine costs. Instead of pulling out a calculator I pulled up the Google Search box and started typing in the calculations (in plain English).  Once I entered what I needed to be calculated, Google performed the calculation for me and also sent me to an online calculator in the event I needed to perform additional calculations.

Google Search Calculations

I also found that you can perform math calculations using Microsoft’s search engine, called Bing, as well; however, minus the online calculator.

Googles NEW Instant Search Feature

September 9, 2010

This may not be turned “ON” yet in your region, but Google has introduced a new feature, called instant, where real time instant search results are provided.

Google Instant

Go to Google.com and start typing in the box something you desire to search for. As you type, what you are searching for, a drop down box will appear (as usual), but the search results will instantly start appearing. This new feature eliminates having to hit the “Enter” key on the keyboard after you type in your entry. Now, if you are not in favor of this new feature, you can turn it off by clicking on “instant is on” and selecting “off”.

How To Spruce Up Your Google Search Page

June 5, 2010

Many PC’s that I get my hands on I set the homepage to “Google.com”, that loads the Official Google Search Page. I have found this to be a great launching point, especially for new computer users. The page has always been quite bland; however, recently Google has provided an option that will allow an user to add a background image to the page.

To find and apply this option, visit Google.com. Once the page loads you will see an option to “Add a background image and make Google your own” (see below).

Google Search

The background can be an image from your computer, your Picasa Web Photos (google account required), the public gallery or from the editor’s picks. For example, I uploaded the image below of a broken Microsoft Window from my PC. Each time I perform a search, that image is now my background (see screenshot below).

Select A Background

One thing to point out. If you want to remove or change an image you can do so by clicking on the “Remove Background Image” text at the bottom LEFT CORNER of the screen. It is difficult to pick this out; however, you can get the general location by looking at the arrow in the screenshot below.

You can read the official notice of this new feature at the Official Google blog [ HERE ] .

Make a Custom Themed Google Home Page

May 14, 2010

I am sure all of you have used the Google search engine. As a matter of fact, when I setup a PC, It is not uncommon for me to set the browser homepage to Google. This makes for an excellent and an easy launching point for the user.  The only problem with doing this is that the Google search engine page is not the most attractive page out there.

image

A solution to making the Google search engine page an attractive interface is to use Favoorit.  With Favoorit you can:

– Find or create your theme
– Add your favorite Websites
– Set it as your homepage
– Enjoy your cutom homepage
– Share it with your friends
– Move the Google search box with your mouse

Here’s how it works:

Visit the Favoorit website.

Select (click on) a background image (or theme). You can even use your own images.

Once the theme loads in your browser,  click on “set as homepage”.

You can change the theme as many times as you want by visiting Favoorit and following the steps outlined above. At the top left corner of the Favoorit page you can also add some of your favorites (most used) sites.
