Add Pixlr Online Photo Editor to Your Google Drive

May 22, 2012

With the inception of Google Drive (Google’s new cloud storage and collaboration service), there are quite a few apps that you can set up that will work hand-in-hand with Google Drive.  One of my favorites is Pixlr.

Pixlr is an online photo editor that gives you the ability to work with photos (and graphics) inside your web browser (no software install is required). If you are already subscribed to Google Drive, you can add Pixlr from the Chrome Web Store. After you have this completed, you will be able to open images from Google Drive right into Pixlr.

An easy way to add apps (such as Pixlr) to Google Drive is to open up your Google Drive, click on the “Create” button, then click on “More”, then click on “Get More Apps”.  When you click on “Get More Apps”, you will be redirected to the Chrome Store where there is a wide (and growing) selection of Google Drive compatible apps.

Best Full Featured All-In-One Screen Capture Program

September 16, 2010

I have said it before and will say it again. If there is a software package out there that is FREE, that continues to evolve and is of great quality; it will be worthy of mention here at What’s On My PC, over and over. I call software apps of this calibre, Hall of Fame software.

Today I bring you a small screen capture application, called PicPick, that definitely falls into that Hall of Fame category and is in a class of its’ own. Since my last review of PicPick, this application has come a long ways’.

PicPick

A screen capture application is a software app that allows you take a snapshot of what’s on your computer screen, whether it is the whole screen or just a portion of it, and save it as a graphic file.  The good about this is, once you have the captured screen in a graphic file format, you can then insert it into documents or simply save the captured file to disk. If you are a graphic designer, software developer, a blogger, a desktop publisher, a Powerpoint user or someone at home who simply needs something that will allow you to grab clips on the internet, then PicPick, I highly recommend.

Now that you have a general idea of what a screen capture application, what is so great about PicPick?  It is simply this, PicPick is easy to use well thought out application; AND for a small program application that you can also carry around on your flash drive, it is loaded with additional features.

After PicPick is installed and launched you will see the PicPick icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of your screen on the taskbar). Simply click on that icon and you will be presented with a popup menu that is self explanatory. If you notice the screenshot below, I want you to look at the other tools that are included such as a color picker, color palette, magnifier, pixel ruler, protractor, cross hair, whiteboard and image editor. All of these tools are mini apps in themselves that compliment the task of screen capturing.

PicPick

The image editor is what has most impressed me and has greatly improved since the last review. For example, for the screenshot above, I selected “fixed region”, to capture a fixed area on the screen and once I made the capture, the capture automatically opened in the “Image Editor”; very nice. I was then able to manipulate the image in the editor any way I liked. There are numerous enhancement options in the editor that are just plain awesome.

Screenshot – [click here]

Screenshot

Well, you heard me rave about this app and the only thing I can tell you is to download it and play with it. Very, very nice (FREE) software app that is well worth installing on your PC. Kudos to the developer of PicPick.  PicPick is FREE for personal use [ click here ] .

Great Review of FREE Screen Capture Tools

June 19, 2009

Some things just should not go unrecognized. Arafat Hossain Piyada, a young tech-blogger from Kolkata, India; who is the blogmaster of Piyada’s World has put together a nice comparison review of 14 FREE Screen Capture Utilities (with Editor Tools) that you need to take a look at.  A lot of work and testing went into compiling this list.

Screen Capture with Editor tools

Screen Capture

Well, it’s true all blogger use this tool so as developer but regular user are not far behind. We all need to capture screen every now and then. I know there is a build in key named PrintScrn which help you to capture image but you need to do manual work to adjust it to fit your need. What a waste of time? More importantly default MS Paint is not enough as a image editor, specially for developer and blogger. So I make this listening to help every type of community.

Pimp Your Profile with Photofunia

June 13, 2009

My friends over at Technize.com recently posted an article (see web clip below) about a cloud application, called Photofunia, that I had not yet experienced. What caught my eye in the article, was a pic of a baby. It’s not everyday you see a a baby on a tech blog, unless it is about the animated “Dancing Baby” (Ooga Chaka Ooga Ooga! …) from several years ago.

[ CLICK HERE TO REMINISCENCE ]

Technize did a great job explaining how Photofunia works, using the baby as the example. I encourage you to visit Technize.com to see how the baby was transitioned into works of art using the online Photofunia photo effects service.

Photofunia

PhotoFunia is an online photo editing tool that gives you a fun filled experience. You upload any photo and just wait to see the magic. Their proprietary technology automatically identifies the face in the photo and let’s you add cool photo effects and create funny face photo montages. PhotoFunia is free and very easy to use. Just select an effect you like from over 100 different effects, upload your photo, and PhotoFunia will handle the rest for you.

Get the last FREE version of FastStone Capture

May 14, 2009

A screen capture utility is a “must have” on any PC (or flash drive); especially if you are a writer, blogger, graphic designer, desktop publisher, etc… I have tried and tested many of the capture utilities and the one that has set well with me is “FastStone Capture”.  FastStone Capture went commercial after version 5.3; however, the freeware version is still available at various sites around the internet.  This little utility is a well thought out screen capture utility. It  is no wonder the author opted to go commercial with it.

Before I tell you where you can get FastStone Capture (the last freeware version), let me give you some hightlights. The download that I will refer you to is a download for the portable version that can be installed on your flash drive or into a folder of your choice on your PC. This way, if you do not like it, simply delete the folder; but I’m telling you this little app rocks and is very easy to use.

FastStone Capture uses very little screen space and provides (6) different screen capture modes (see below) that can be activated by clicking one of the mode buttons in the application or by using hotkey combinations on your keyboard.

FastStone_Capture

1. Capture Active Window

2. Capture Window /Object

3. Capture Rectangle Region

4. Capture Freehand Region

5. Capture Full Screen

6. Capture Scrolling Window

With FastStone Capture you have the option of sending the captured result to a built in graphic editor, to the clipboard, to a file, to the printer, or to an email (as an attachment).  The output file can be saved to the most common graphic file formats (e.g. gif, png, bmp, jpg, tif) or as a PDF file. Settings are also available that allow you to auto capture to an edge/watermark or to prompt you each time to assign a caption or label to your captured result.  This little app also features a built-in graphic editor, a screen magnifier and a screen color picker.

If you do not have this app, I suggest you get it now…  You can download FastStone Capture (last freeware version) [ HERE ] .  Kudos to the author of FastStone Capture for making such a wonderful application.

A Windows “Paint” Replacement…

December 27, 2008

I never could figure out why Microsoft would build an operating system, that is the premier operating system of the world, then include in that operating system some really poor programs (such as notepad, wordpad, paint, calculator). The freeware and open source authors have put those programs to shame…

One replacement program that I use to replace “Paint”, is a program called “Paint.net”. Paint.net is a FREE program that originally started out as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft (years ago).  Some of the former students (alumni) who originally worked on the development of the software, continue to maintain it today. I can remember trying this program when it first was available on the internet and shrugged it off.  I recently went back to it and found it has grown into one powerful, yet easy to use, image and photo editing program. I surely hope that the development cycle of Paint.net continues, as it is at a stage where it is rivaling other photo editing and paint programs.

Paint.net - Main Window

Features
(as stated on the web site)

Simple, intuitive user interface

Layers

Unlimited History

Support for many popular file formats

Effects and Adjustments

Full Support for Dual- and Quad-Core CPU’s, and 64-bit

Tablet PC Support

Extensibility

Free

Features planned for version 4.0 include an improved install and update experience, lower memory requirements, increased performance,  a totally revamped “brush” system, layer masks, and adjustment layers. The improvements to the data model and rendering engine will also enable features such as text layers, effect layers, composite layers, and soft selections.

Capture that screen…

November 12, 2008

Did you know that if you hit the “print screen” key on your keyboard, it will take a snapshot of what you have displayed on your screen. You initially do not see the snapshot, until you paste it into an application. For example, hit the “print screen” key, then open your word processing program, such as WordPad, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, etc. Once you have a blank document open, do a “right” mouse click and select “paste” (or can do CTRL-V on the keyboard). The snapshot that you took of the screen will appear in the document, which can ultimately be resized or cropped… This is a down and dirty way to do a screen capture in a pinch; however, there is a ton of software applications out there that will give you a whole lot more options. If you are someone who works with graphics, documents, blogs, etc. on a regular basis, it is a necessity to have a good screen capture program.  I am currently using (2)-two screen capturing utilities on my PC (EasyCapture and PicPick Tools).  Both are very good and both are being continually developed.

There are (2)-Two “FREE” Screen Capture programs that I recommend:

EasyCapture

One program that I use is called EasyCapture. EasyCapture is FREE and has the ability to capture any part of the screen, scrolling windows and entire web pages. Once you perform a capture you can use the built in editor to add text, draw lines, draw arrows, plug in text balloons, etc… AND you can save the the captured image in a variety of commonly used graphic formats (bmp, jpg, gif, png, tiff). I have found this capturing program to be comparable to many of the commercial programs that are available and the best part about it is that it is FREE. The program provides various capturing options:

Capture full screen, active window,

Capture windows, buttons, toolbar, controls and other windows objects.

Capture selected region.

Capture scrolling windows and entire web pages.

Capture fix-size region.

Support OS: Windows Vista, WinXP, Win2000

PicPick Tools

PicPick

PicPick Tools is another screen capturing program that I recently came across, that is portable (can be run from your flash drive).  I was quite surprised I had never seen this program before, due to the fact that I love screen capturing utilities.  I have tested this program as well; and was really impressed with it’s functionality.   It features a powerful capture tool, image editor, color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair, whiteboard and etc. After you launch the program, you simply select the tool you want by clicking on the tray icon.

SUMO Paint Rocks…

August 24, 2008

Recently I submitted a post about applications that are “flash based” (Adobe Flash Player), requiring no installation, and can be opened in your web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera). Recently I came across another “flash based” site called “SUMO Paint”. You really have to check this out [SUMO PAINT – Click Here]. SUMO Paint is FREE image editing software that gives you the opportunity to create, edit and comment images online with powerful tools and layer support. Appears the application is currently in beta (testing stages); but, what I have seen so far, it is fantastic. This site is an excellent example of how we will most likely access complex software applications across the internet in the very near future. If you want to go directly into the SUMO Paint application, go to www.sumopaint.com/app
