Is 123456 A Good Password? — and MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-04)

January 25, 2016

Is 123456 A Good Password? – Apparently many people think that it is. The password “123456” once again reigns as the most commonly used password, as it has since SplashData’s first list in 2011, demonstrating how people’s choices for passwords remain consistently risky. The second most risky password used is; you got it, is the word “password”. To see a listing of the worst passwords for 2015 — CLICK HERE… The whole purpose of this annual publishing of bad passwords is to encourage “we the people” to use stronger passwords in an effort to protect our personal data and to improve internet security.

Worst Passwords

One of the options that I use to protect myself, due to the numerous passwords that I use, is to use a password manager. The password manager that I use and strongly endorse is the S10 Password Vault which is available as a Windows install, portable app (on USB Drive), iPhone app, iPad app, and Android app. Many folks have a tendency to use one of the cloud-based password managers; however, I personally just do not feel comfortable with piping the passwords to my personal accounts into the cloud and not knowing (for absolutely sure) that it will always remain protected. With S10 Password Vault, I at least feel I have some level of control.

Synchronize Your Folders and Drives In A Quick and Easy Way – I have been testing various FREE backup and synchronization software. One that is currently on my computer now that is leading the pack is Synchredible. The standard version is free for private purposes. What I really like about Synchredible is that it has a built in wizard that will walk you through configuring your sync jobs. Once these jobs are setup, performing synchronized backups is as easy as clicking a button.

This is Awesome… Play, Create and Share Realistic Looking Jigsaw Puzzles Online

December 20, 2014

When I come across something that I classify as “awesome”, I want to share it with my readers right away! Some of you may like jigsaw puzzles and some of you may not; however, you have to take a look at this online (virtual) version of jigsaw puzzles called Jigsaw Planet (by Tibo Software).

Briefly, I am familiar with Tibo Software’s Jigsaw Puzzle software and highly recommend it if you are into this sort of thing. The online version that they have created is the best out there (in my opinion) in coming very close to the real jigsaw puzzles that we put together out of the box.

Tibo - Jigsaw Planet

To play (or try) the online version, simply visit jigsawplanet.com and select one of the puzzles they have available. This will give you an idea of what I am talking about; but, if you sign up for an account this opens the door for a whole lot more such as uploading your own photos to create your own jigsaw puzzles that can be shared with others (by simply emailing them a link to the puzzle you created).

Also, account holders can create puzzle albums and customize the puzzles to determine the shape, number of pieces, sharing options, etc…; and, to make things more challenging, you can create puzzles where the pieces can be rotated by picking up the pieces by left clicking the mouse and rotating the piece by right clicking the mouse. I think this feature of rotating the pieces is unheard in comparison to other online jigsaw puzzles I have tried.

Account holders also have the luxury that once you start a puzzle, the puzzle is automatically saved, no matter where you leave off. If you log off or leave the site, when you come back and log in, your puzzle is there where you left it (with the pieces intact). Another feature here is that the pieces look real and you can go full screen (without ads)… I think, once you get in there with this, you will be bookmarking this jigsaw app.

An Ever-Growing Collection of FREE Online Jigsaw Puzzles

April 12, 2011

If you love jigsaw puzzles then you will be surely entertained and challenged with TheJigSawPuzzles.com. There is nothing to install.  Just visit the site in your web browser and select your puzzle background from over hundreds of puzzles. You can even select how many puzzle pieces you want to scramble.

TheJigsawPuzzles

The cool factors with TheJigSawPuzzles.com is that once you select your puzzle, you can go full screen, pull the pieces sidewards, change the background color, turn the sound on and off, get hints, pause the timer, move the edge pieces for an easier start and can select multiple pieces by dragging the mouse around the pieces.

TheJigsawPuzzles

You can sign up for an account; however, not necessary. By signing up you can make your own puzzles from your own pictures. You can upload up to 8 megabytes at one time. No individual file may be larger than 2 megabytes. I know that does not sound like a lot and it’s not; however, from my testing when I uploaded a large picture file, the site automatically scaled down the image to a kilobyte size without affecting the clarity of the image.

TheJigSawPuzzles.com is one of the best online jigsaw puzzles I have experienced.  Here’s to hoping that it continues to get better.

3D Jigsaw Puzzles on your Computer for FREE

September 10, 2010

From the developers of Solitaire Forever, which is one of my favorite versions of Solitaire, comes Puzzles Forever.

Puzzles Forever

If you are a lover of jigsaw puzzles, then you are going to love this app. With Puzzles Forever you can take your own pictures and make 3D jigsaw puzzles in a very attractive interface (with fullscreen and zoom options).

Puzzles Forever

This software is capable of creating puzzles up to 900 pieces with difference piece types. You simply move the pieces by holding down your left mouse button. Rotating pieces can be accomplished by using your mouse wheel or the cursor (or arrow) keys on your keyboard. There are other neat controls, as well.

One thing to point out is that there is a registered version of Puzzles Forever as well, however the version I am pointing out is FREE. The difference between the two is that when you are creating your puzzle, some of the pieces are are already put into place for you. If you are like me, that is not a problem; I need all the help I can get.

Features:

– Beautiful, simple graphic interface
– Create puzzles with up to 900 pieces
– Enjoy six free puzzles
– Import your own pictures to use as puzzles
– Several puzzle piece shape types
– Multiple zoom levels
– Full screen mode

Jigs@w Puzzle Promo Creator

October 21, 2008

If you enjoy the challenge of jigsaw puzzles, then you will enjoy the electronic version(s) developed by Tibo Software. Tibo offers a paid commercial version of their jigsaw puzzle software, which is really good; BUT, they also offer a “FREE” puzzle creator called “Jigs@w Puzzle Promo Creator“. The promo creator was developed by Tibo to promote their commercial package of the software with the intention you could create a jigsaw puzzle, package it, and place it on a website for visitor’s to download. If you want to create a jigsaw puzzle, from a photo on your computer, for your personal use or to send to a friend, start up the promo creator software and the wizard will walk you through the steps. As you are going through the steps, don’t worry about filling out website information, banners, alternative text, etc… unless you want to; otherwise just keep clicking “Next”. You will get to a point in the wizard where you have to enter a title and another point where you will have to select a picture or photo on your computer. You will eventually will get to a point where you can click “Save As”, where you give the puzzle a name, and the software will automatically compile the puzzle and save it as an executable file (*.exe). To start up the new puzzle, browse for the puzzle name in the folder which you saved it, click on the name of the puzzle and the jigsaw puzzle will come up ready for you to piece together. To pick up a puzzle piece, left mouse click on the piece; and, to turn the piece, right mouse click the piece. Who knows, you may like this enough to purchase it. I did!
