Tonido – A FREE Private Cloud Server

YESTERDAY I posted an option to remotely access your files on your computer using Microsoft’s OneDrive (Remotely Fetch files on your PC Using OneDrive); and, TODAY I will give you another option called “Tonido”.

I currently use Tonido to turn my main computer at home into a cloud server, which allows me to access my files from a remote computer (through a web browser) and/or my smartphone (via the Tonido app).

Tonido Server allows you to access all your files on your computer from a web browser, smartphone, tablet or even DLNA enabled devices.

Simple setup. Start your own Personal Cloud in minutes.

Easy to get started: just install the Tonido Server software and your computer turns into a private cloud server.

Easy to remember link to your computer. e.g.: http://john.tonidoID.com

Ideal as a personal cloud server or a home cloud server. Your files reside on your computer not on a third party server.

Remotely Fetch files on your PC Using OneDrive

Did you know, if you have the OneDrive desktop app for Windows installed on a PC, you can use the “Fetch Files Feature” to access all your files on that PC from another PC by going to the OneDrive website? For example, this feature would allow you to remotely access your computer at home to download files, stream videos and browse photos.

One Of The Easiest Ways To Access Your Desktop Files From The Cloud

TechRepublic has a nice post on a program, called Tonido, that I presently use to remotely access files/folders on a computer I have setup. Tonido is especially useful if you are a self-employed IT Pro. I encourage you to visit TechRepublic to learn how to install Tonido.

Below are some key points quoted from the article:

Tonido turns a desktop into your own personal cloud, making it simple to gain access to your files and folders from the cloud via browser or mobile app. There are two versions of Tonido: Personal and FileCloud.

Tonido doesn’t store your data on its servers. In fact, the only thing Tonido’s service does is serve as a redirect to your desktop. With encrypted passwords (make sure to set a very strong one here), you should be good to go in terms of security.

Geek Squeaks (#2015-19) – View And Control Your Android Device From Your Computer — and MORE FREE STUFF

View And Control Your Android Device From Your ComputerVysor is a Google Chrome extension that is currently in beta (testing) that allows you to mirror (and control) your Android device (smartphone or tablet) from your Windows based computer. Keep in mind this utility is in beta testing, so there may be bugaboos… Your smartphone or tablet must be connected to your computer via USB. Typically this is not a problem for many Android device users, due this is a method that we often use to charge our devices. You can read in detail — CLICK HERE — the steps and driver involved for this to work. If you are successful, I think you will find that Vysor is an awesome application in the making where you can control every aspect of your Android device from your computer (even texting).

In summary, the ingredients to make this work are: USB debugging must be enabled on your device; your device connected to your computer via USB; the Google Chrome browser; the Google Chrome Vysor extension,; and the ABD driver installed. May sound complicated, but is not as hard as you think and in the end you have a very impressive (and useful) application.

Sandboxie Now Supports Windows 10 – If you do not know what Sandboxie is then you are missing out on a very special piece of software that can keep you safe… Sandboxie is a software application that gives you the ability to run other software applications and surf the internet in an isolated abstraction area called a sandbox. Under the supervision of Sandboxie, an application operates normally and at full speed, but can’t effect permanent changes to your computer. Instead, the changes are effected only in the sandbox; thus, in the event of a malware infection or the software does not meet your needs, you simply delete the sandbox. I currently use Sandboxie to test software that I am not sure about. Since the my upgrade to Windows 10, I found that the developers of Sandboxie are working on a compatible version for Windows 10. If you are a Windows 10 and Sandboxie user, you may want to give the beta (test) version a try (CLICK HERE); HOWEVER, please note that SBIE Beta v5 does not support Windows Metro Apps or the Edge browser at this time. You will need to change your default web browser in Win 10 from Edge to something else. For example, in my case, I am currently (and safely) using Sandboxie to run the Google Chrome browser inside a sandbox.

Remote Desktop App For Accessing Your Windows (or Mac) Computer Using Your Android Phone or Tablet

One of the best Android Apps to remotely access your PC is Splashtop 2. You would never think this is possible, but it is with this app (and it works exceptionally well). I do recommend that if you do give this a shot that you use a tablet computer to take advantage of the screen space.

Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop - screenshot

Simple steps on getting you started… Download and install the Splashtop 2 app to your Android tablet or phone (get it HERE) and download and install the Splashtop Streamer Windows installation to your PC (get it HERE). After installing the Windows app, launch Splashtop on your device and create an account. After creating your account, Splashtop will go looking for your PC. One thing that I did was go into the Spashtop Streamer software on the computer (under “Advanced”) and enter my IP Address for my computer. This made things even better…

How well does this work? In my scenario I am using my Samsung Galaxy Tab S Android Tablet to remotely access my ASUS Desktop Windows 8.1 Computer. Using my setup (as described) I can remotely access my desktop computer from anywhere in my home, start up my WinTV application on my desktop computer and stream TV from the computer to my tablet. I am amazed at how well this works. With Splashtop 2 I can operate my computer from my tablet as if I am sitting at the computer. I have found Splashtop 2 to be an exceptional app…

With Splashtop 2 You Can:

* Use your Android device to access all of the programs and files on your computer with 100% compatibility, including all PC/Mac applications

* Use your full desktop browser with Flash and Java support, with all of your bookmarks and your favorite plug-ins

* Enjoy the full video and music libraries that are playable only on your computer, whatever formats they’re in

* Play all the 3D games and all the Flash games

Requirements:

* Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP, Mac OS X 10.6+ or Linux (Ubuntu 12.04).

* A computer with dual-core CPU is strongly recommended for best performance.

* Internet connection is needed to use this app.

* Productivity Pack is available for Android tablet only

GEEK SQUEAKS – Featuring Google Chrome’s Remote Desktop App – AND MORE

Did you know you can access any remote connection enabled computer with the same Google Account? You can with Google Chrome’s Remote Desktop App. The nice thing about this app is that Chrome does not need to be opened on the remote computer.

Google Chrome’s Remote Desktop App

If interested in giving this a spin, visit the Chrome Remote Desktop App page (in the Chrome Web Store) where you can install the app.

Once installed and you open it for the first time, you will go through an authorization process and will be asked to see your email address (which is the validation key to your account); to see your other activated Chrome remote desktop computers; to receive (and send) chat messages so that the computers can talk to each other; and, authorization to allow remote access even if no one is at the PC using the application.

Need more help with this, check out the Chrome Remote Desktop App Support Page…

imageIf you upgraded to Windows 8.1 and you are now being required to logon with a Windows Live account, there is way to bypass that logon screen and let Windows auto logon for you.

As you may have discovered, Windows 8.1 is tightly integrated into a Windows Live Account.  As a result, it can be a pain, especially for home based computer users to login each time Windows starts. By following these steps, it will make your life using the computer a little easier.

  1. Hit the Windows Key and the R key on your keyboard (Win + R) to bring up the RUN dialog box.
  2. Type in the RUN dialog box netplwiz and click OK
  3. When the Users Account box appear, under the Users Tab you will see he following: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  4. Uncheck the box and click OK
  5. When the Automatically Sign In Box appears, type in your Windows Live Account username and password and click on OK
  6. Restart your computer to see if it took. During start up of the computer you will briefly see the log in screen (if you followed the steps correctly).
