Learn How “Windows Sandbox is a safer way to run programs you don’t trust”

Sandboxing applications are nothing new but is nice to see Microsoft bake an option into the OS… As a reader of the blog noted, after I posted the article, “The feature is available for users of Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise running Build 18301 or later, and requires AMD64 and virtualization capabilities enabled in BIOS.” So, this is not an option in the home version of Windows 10.

Microsoft is introducing a new solution that brings it in line with a standard already found on other operating systems: Windows Sandbox.

The feature creates “an isolated, temporary desktop environment” (and lightweight, at 100MB) on which to run an app, and once you’ve finished with it, the entire sandbox is deleted — everything else on your PC is safe and separate.

Don’t Throw Away That Old Computer. Turn It Into A Chromebook (sort of) — and MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-08)

Don’t Throw Away That Old Computer. Turn It Into A Chromebook (sort of) – Neverware, a New York City startup, is in the business of taking old computers and refurbishing them into “Chromebooks” (sort of). Actually you could call them Chromiumbooks, due they use a modified version of Chromium (instead of Google Chrome) that will work on most hardware. The difference between Chromium and Chrome are undistinguishable. The good about this is that the software to convert that old computer to a Chromebook or to create a dual-boot system, is free to individual users. If you are interested in giving this a try, the download and instructions can be found by HERE.

Sandbox Security Software for Windows

Did you ever wish you could browse the internet and not have to worry about malicious software or content attacking your system? OR Did you ever wish you could test a program without it causing changes to your computer? There is a way and it works very well. It is called Sandboxie

Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Sandboxie

Once you install Sandboxie, you can run or test your programs in an isolated space, called a sandbox, which prevents the programs from making altering changes to your computer and/or to the data in your computer. Any changes that are made are kept inside the sandbox. I have been following and using “Sandboxie” for several years, and I primarily use it to run my browser in. For example, you can run your browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, Firefox) in a sandbox and not worry about malicious software (i.e. trojans, spyware, hijackers, etc…) causing harm to your computer. Any malicious software that is downloaded, is downloaded into the sandbox which is an isolated area away from the main operation of the PC.

In the event your computer becomes a victim of malicious content, the malicious content is trapped in the sandbox. At that point, you simply discard the contents of the sandbox and start over. If you are interested in trying this software out, I suggest you jump over to the Sandboxie web site and thoroughly read the “Help” and “FAQ”sections. This is good stuff; especially, if you ride the internet hard or you like to test software.

Benefits of the Isolated Sandbox (as described by the developer)

Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be discarded trivially.

Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don’t leak into Windows.

Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can’t break out of the sandbox and can’t infect your real system.

Windows Stays Lean: Prevent wear-and-tear in Windows by installing software into an isolated sandbox.

Tech-for Everyone – Sandboxie Lifetime License Giveaway

TechPaul, at Tech-for Everyone, is running a (5)-five license giveaway (contest drawing) for the software package called Sandboxie. The “cool factor” here is that if you win one of the licenses for Sandboxie, it is for lifetime! To enter the contest, simply visit Tech-for Everyone [click here], scroll to the bottom of the page and leave a comment. Your name and email will be required in order for the license to be sent to you, should you win.

Sandboxie

What the heck is Sandboxie?

Folks, I would not live without Sandboxie. With Sandboxie installed on your PC you can run applications, like your web browser, in an isolated “protected” space on your PC. For example, occasionally I will run my web browser (e.g. Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer) in Sandboxie. As a result, if I would happen to come in contact with any malware while on the internet, my PC would be protected because I was running my browser within Sandboxie.  Basically any application you run in the sandbox, stays in the sandbox. It is a great utility to have in place for testing software.

I had a friend recently who became obsessed with playing an online game on a site that he claimed was messing with his PC.  Of course I tried to tell him to move on; however, I knew that would not happen. Instead, I had him run his browser within Sandboxie.  Any malicious or suspicious content, from that point on, that was hitting his PC, remained in the Sandbox.

I’m telling you, from a tech and security standpoint, this is great software.  When I saw TechPaul’s post on this giveaway, I jumped right on it with the hope I would be lucky enough to get one of those lifetime licenses.

You can enter the contest for the Sandboxie License Giveaway [HERE] .
