How To Use Microsoft Windows Scan To Scan Documents And Pictures

April 11, 2017

If you are using Windows 10 and have a current model printer with a scanner installed, you may want to take a look at the Microsoft Windows Scanner App (called Windows Scan). I know through experience of assisting others, the scanning software that is often bundled with the printers/scanners is difficult to navigate and understand. Windows Scan is about as simple (and easy to understand) as it gets when it comes to scanning documents, pictures, etc…

The Windows Scan App may already be installed on your Windows 10 Computer; and, if not, you can download it from the Windows Store (see source link below). Once installed, make sure your printer/scanner is turned “on”; and, what you want to scan is on the bed of the scanner. At this point, launch Windows Scan and you should see your scanner’s model name; the source (which is typically a flatbed); and the file type (that provides options to save the scan, such as PDF, JPG, PNG, etc…).  You will also see “Show More”, which will give you additional options such as changing the resolution of the scan. At the bottom of the Window you can then click on “Preview” (to see what the scan will look like) or you can click on “Scan”.  I typically go with the “Preview” selection. Once you click on “Preview” the document or image will be scanned. After it has scanned you will see round handles at the corner of the scanner window. You can move these handles to crop the document or picture down to its’ realistic proportions. Once you are satisfied, click on “Scan” and following the scan the document or picture will open (typically in a software app already built into windows). Typically all scanned documents or pictures are saved to the Windows “Pictures” folder by default.

Once you learn how to navigate Windows Scan, I think you will agree that this app is a real time saver and gets the job done without pulling your hair out.

Create A Mouse Cursor Infinity Effect

June 27, 2012

If you have a large screen computer monitor, you know that moving the mouse cursor around from one side of the screen to the other can be a real exercise. To help make your mouse lazy, and at the same time increase productivity, give Mousinity a try.

Mousinity is a portable app that creates an infinity effect for your cursor when it reaches the edges of your screen. For example if you go to the top of your screen, your mouse will appear on the bottom, right-to-left, etc.

Takes some getting used to, but once you do, you will be using Mousinity on a regular basis.

Note:  There is no tray icon with Mousinity.  To turn it “off”, simply run Mousinity again and select “yes”.

Scan To The Cloud With CloudScan

March 14, 2012

I started wondering if there was software available (for FREE) that would allow you to use your scanner to scan documents to the cloud?  What I specifically was looking for was scanning software that would load in my browser and allow me to scan documents to my Google Docs account.

Sure enough, if you can think of it, then it has been done. What I came across on this hunt was CloudScan that met my criteria, and more!

CloudScan is a completely free scan application. It provides a new, simple way to scan your documents, pictures or photos and save them to mulitpage PDF files. Cloud can be successfully used on one computer. The simple, friendly interface provides results in seconds. If you have more than one PC (home or office network), you are getting a revolutionary approach to scanning: just install the SharedScanner component to one PC, and you can share scanner and use it from almost any other computer or device without installation. Just a usual web browser is required.

– Scan documents, pictures, and photos to PDF and TIFF
– Work with any TWAIN compatible scanners (more than 1600 are available on the market)
– Scan inside a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome)
– Share scanner accross network. Nothing to install on any machine after the initial installation on your PC with a scanner
– Very easy to use. One click to scan, one more to save to multipage PDF or TIFF.
– It is the only free scanning software for web browsers

Very Small Program You Can Use to Take Advantage of Your Scanner

December 14, 2011

I am going to bet that most of you have an all-in-one printer of some type (i.e. print, scan and copy).  I am also going to bet that that the scanner component of this all-in-one device is very infrequently used. This is usually the case due to most folks not completely grasping the purpose of the scanner.

Scanners are excellent devices to electronically archive documents, receipts, news clippings, articles, etc… ; however, the software that ships with these devices are often difficult for the end-user to understand.

To help you get over the hump in scanner usage I found a very small software utility called WinScan2PDF (40K) that gives you the ability to scan documents and save them on your computer as a PDF file (Adobe Portable Document Format).

Due to the small file size of WinScan2PDF,  I carry it around with me on my flash drive and have found it very useful when I need to quickly scan or copy a document.  Talk about easy to use…  Simply select the source (which will be your printer/scanner), click on “Scan to PDF” and the scanning process will initiate; and, following the scanning process you will be given opportunity to save the file as a PDF file.  Very handy utility…

Do you think your PC has a virus?

May 3, 2011

If you currently have anti-virus or anti-malware software installed and you think your computer system has been compromised and you need a second opinion; an option to consider is Microsoft’s Safety Scanner.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

The purpose of the Microsoft Safety Scanner is just that.  It is a safety scanner and not full install antivirus software package with realtime protection.  Simply download and run.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Reflected below are screenshots of Microsoft Safety Scanner to give you an idea what to expect after you download and run the scanner file.

A notice advising you that Microsoft Security Scanner is not a replacement for an anti-malware solution; however, the tool is engineered to remove viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software.

Scan Type:  Determineswhether you want to perform a “Quick Scan”, a “Full Scan” or a “Customized Scan”.  I recomment the “Full Scan” if you suspect any problems with your PC.

Turn Your Scanner and Printer into A Photocopier

March 2, 2011

Most folks that I know do not fully use their all-in-one printer/scanners and often are at a loss in understanding how the software works to make their printer/scanners work.

I recently came across a small utility called iCopy, that is easy to use and will turn that printer/scanner into a photocopier or copy machine.

iCopy Free Photocopier is a freeware and open source application that lets you combine your scanner and printer into a powerful, but easy to use photocopier by only pressing a button.

Select copies, color, paper size and image settings with a few click and then press the big Copy Button!

iCopy will recognize most twain compliant scanners and can be used as a portable app.
