Is 123456 A Good Password? — and MORE GREAT GEEK SQUEAK STUFF (#2016-04)

January 25, 2016

Is 123456 A Good Password? – Apparently many people think that it is. The password “123456” once again reigns as the most commonly used password, as it has since SplashData’s first list in 2011, demonstrating how people’s choices for passwords remain consistently risky. The second most risky password used is; you got it, is the word “password”. To see a listing of the worst passwords for 2015 — CLICK HERE… The whole purpose of this annual publishing of bad passwords is to encourage “we the people” to use stronger passwords in an effort to protect our personal data and to improve internet security.

Worst Passwords

One of the options that I use to protect myself, due to the numerous passwords that I use, is to use a password manager. The password manager that I use and strongly endorse is the S10 Password Vault which is available as a Windows install, portable app (on USB Drive), iPhone app, iPad app, and Android app. Many folks have a tendency to use one of the cloud-based password managers; however, I personally just do not feel comfortable with piping the passwords to my personal accounts into the cloud and not knowing (for absolutely sure) that it will always remain protected. With S10 Password Vault, I at least feel I have some level of control.

An Extraordinary Craigslist App For Windows 8 (and 8.1)

November 3, 2014

You may have noticed here on the blog I do not write too much about Windows 8 Apps. In my opinion the Windows App Store selection is nothing compared to the Google or Apple platforms; however, there is on occasion I will find a Windows App that will impress me as being useful. One of those apps being CPlus for Craigslist.

CPlus for Craigslist

If you are a Craigslist junky I believe you will like this app. It will definitely making searching Craigslist, across multiple locations, easier than visiting the Craigslist site itself. I typically use this app to look for things on Craigslist; not to post anything. Therefore the posting component, that is built into this app I cannot vouch for

Features – CPlus for Craigslist:

  • Search multiple cities
  • Add multiple cities and switch the search results easily with a single click.
  • Save searches and favorite listings
  • Save your search with the filter setting and favorite listings. They will be displayed on the main page.
  • Map view
  • Show all the postings on the map – especially useful when you are looking for apartments or houses.
  • In-app Posting
  • Post your ads inside our app and you may add multiple Craigslist accounts. (This feature is for Windows 8 Pro version only. The free version can post up to 10 times)
  • Account Management
  • Manage your Craigslist account. Edit or repost your existing posts. Show your previous posts.
  • History Tracking
  • Track your recent searches and viewed posts.

Have It All With A Solid State Hybrid Drive

July 11, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Have It All With A Solid State Hybrid Drive –  If you have an older PC and you are looking for a performance boost, that gives you faster speed with capacity, you may want to take a look one of Seagate’s Solid State Hybrid Drives.

Seagate’s Solid State Hybrid Drive

The good about the hybrid drive is that it is less expensive (see sample pricing) than solid state drives, yet gives you the kick and speed of the solid state drive (see customer reviews).

The hybrid drives by Seagate set aside approximately 6GB’s of ultra-fast NAND flash (same as used for SSD technology) to store the most frequently used data.  What this means is that, as you use the computer, the hybrid drive learns what data you use frequently and stores it on the SSD side of the drive. As this happens over time you will notice that the load times of those frequently used application are greatly reduced.  System boot times and system responsiveness are also noticeably improved using the hybrid form factor.

The Seagate® Desktop SSHD is designed to work in any standard desktop system. Unlike other hybrid solutions, there are no special drivers or software to install and configure. It installs and works just like a hard drive – only faster!

Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8

June 11, 2014

[FEATURED GEEK SQUEAK] Shut Down Windows 8 With Shutdown8 – After the release of Windows 8.1 Update, Microsoft did make things better for people to navigate around; however, shutting down the PC is still a hidden component (when you are on the desktop side of Windows 8).

To remedy this issue on my Windows 8 computer, I installed a little program called Shutdown8.

Shutdown8

Shutdown8 is available as an install file or a portable app. I went for the portable app version. Once you get it installed, pin the Shutdown8 executable file to your taskbar making it very handy to shutdown your PC.

Not only does Shutdown8 provide convenience in shutting down your PC, it also has the following features:

  • Shuts down/powers off computers at a specified time
  • Users can set the timer with the [+][-] keys or the mouse wheel button
  • Hibernate Mode: Saves the contents from the RAM to a hard disk and shuts down
  • Sleep Mode: Saves the state of the computer to RAM and enters a low-power mode
  • Works well with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

Stardock Makes Windows 8 Easier With ModernMix

March 7, 2013

Stardock is currently working on a Windows 8 application called ModernMix, that is a must have application for Windows 8. ModernMix is in Beta; however, it has been released for public use.

We all know that Windows 8 has been challenge for most users due to the interface change. We have been trained, by Microsoft, for over 20 years; to open, close and minimize applications via the windows controls in the top right corner of a window. When you boot to the Windows 8 Start Screen, which is host to and the launching point for Windows Apps, your first instinct is to try and close an app by looking for those controls; only to find out that they do not exist. ModernMix changes all of that.

After you install ModernMix you will notice that any App you open there is now a set of controls. These controls, located in the top right corner of the app you have open, allows you to toggle the app into a Windows mode, toggle the app back to the Start Screen Mode, or close the app. When you are at the desktop level and you have a Windows App open you can open, close and minimize the window (containing the app) just as you always have.  Another cool feature is that you can pin the app to the Windows taskbar.

ModernMix

Once the app is open in a Window it will act as it normally does.  For example, using the screenshot above.  I opened a news app on the Windows 8 Start Screen, toggled the control to the Windows mode (which took me to the desktop) and was able to scroll horizontally through the news articles.

ModernMix is currently $4.99, and typically I only promote FREE software; however, this is one exception. ModernMix is the missing link to Windows 8 and I highly recommend it. Stardock has once again pushed the envelope and came up with a very useful software application that will make your Windows 8 experience a good experience.

Perform Much Smaller Mouse Movements or Touch Swipes To Close A Windows 8 App

December 14, 2012

Recently I posted an article, The Easy Way To Close A Windows 8 App, that explains how to close an app in Windows 8 by positioning the mouse pointer at the top of the app screen (where the pointer turns into a hand); then, dragging and dropping the app to the bottom of the screen.

On a desktop computer where the screen can be quite large and the travel distance (or threshold) to drag and drop the app (to close it) can be an exercise in itself. It was at this point I wondered if there was not a way to close the app quicker using less travel distance. Sure enough, using the analogy of “if you can think it, someone else has done it”, I came across a small portable utility called Close Threshold for Metro Apps.

Close Threshold for Metro Apps

By using Close Threshold for Metro Apps, if you set the sliders to the left, save the settings, you will find that you will not have to drag an app to the bottom of the screen. The travel distance to close an app is reduced dramatically resulting in a more efficient and faster method to close the app.

There is also an additional feature where you can completely disable the “drag and drop” method of closing an app all together.

With Close Threshold for Metro Apps you will able:

  • to speed up Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to speed up Metro apps closing with touch gestures
  • to disable Metro apps closing with mouse
  • to disable Metro apps closing with touch
