Upgrade To Bluetooth 5 To Be Announced

June 13, 2016

According to the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group), a formal announcement will be made, on June 16, 2016, in regards to the next version of Bluetooth. It will be marketed as Bluetooth 5.

“On the technical side, Bluetooth 5 has a lot to offer. As previously announced, it will double the range and quadruple the speed of low energy Bluetooth transmissions. But there’s more. Bluetooth 5 will also provide significant new functionality for connectionless services like location-relevant information and navigation. By adding significantly more capacity to advertising transmissions, Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world. It’s a great story and one we’re looking forward to telling from our upcoming media event in London on 16 Junedd”…. READ MORE

Bluetooth

What is bluetooth?

Have you ever paired your smartphone (or cell phone) with your car’s stereo in order receive or make calls?; or, Paired your music device with headphones?; or, Paired a keyboard with a tablet?  If so, you was using bluetooth wireless technology to make the connection possible (over short ranges and distances). With this weeks coming announcement of Bluetooth 5, the range will be doubled and the speed will be quadrupled.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the ISM band from 2.4 to 2.485 GHz[4]) from fixed and mobile devices, and building personal area networks (PANs). Invented by telecom vendor Ericsson in 1994, it was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. It can connect several devices, overcoming problems of synchronization.

Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which has more than 25,000 member companies in the areas of telecommunication, computing, networking, and consumer electronics. The IEEE standardized Bluetooth as IEEE 802.15.1, but no longer maintains the standard. The Bluetooth SIG oversees development of the specification, manages the qualification program, and protects the trademarks. A manufacturer must make a device meet Bluetooth SIG standards to market it as a Bluetooth device. A network of patents apply to the technology, which are licensed to individual qualifying devices… Source: Wikipedia

An Ad Free Weather Service

March 5, 2013

There are a lot of really cool (and dependable) weather services out there, but what upsets my apple cart is that when I go to those sites they are driven by advertisements to the point that the only storm I see is the outpouring of the ads.

With a winter storm bearing down on my location in Maryland, I thought it would befitting to present to you an ad free weather service, that I depend on, called the National Weather Service (NWS).

National Weather Service

The National Weather Service (NWS) , once known as the Weather Bureau, is a part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States government. It is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland.

When you get to the National Weather Service homepage simply enter your zip code and press “go” to get the weather information for your location.  If you notice, the page load is fast and there are no advertisements; and, not forgetting to mention all the weather information you will ever need.

As an added bonus, my brother Tim, who serves as a weather consultant in Pumpkin Center, MD,  pointed out to me, on the NWS site, you can get a full screen nationwide snapshot of the weather [HERE]Also, if you want to listen to the NWS weather broadcasts, over the internet, the best listing I found for this is actually at another favorite weather site of mine called Wunderground.  You can get to the listing of NWS broadcasts at the Wunderground site [HERE] .

The NWS is tasked with providing forecasts, public warnings, and other products to organizations and the public for the purposes of protection, safety, and general information. This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, and 122 local weather forecast offices (WFOs). As the NWS is a government agency, most of its products are in the public domain and available free of charge.

Make Your Photos and Videos Automatically Fly From Your Camera to Your Computer

October 24, 2011

I spend much of my obsession for technology, by looking for the latest technology in computers and computer accessories on Amazon. It is such a vast resource that you can literally spend hours upon hours browsing their site.

Today, I came across a technology that I did not know about that is just downright impressive. I am sure many of you out there have digital cameras that use the SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity Cards) in your camera. Typically, after you take your pictures you manually have to transfer the pictures to your computer by either connecting the camera to the computer or by removing the SDHC card from the camera and copying the pictures to the computer.

Well, appears there is a new technology available that allows you to wirelessly (and automatically) transfer or upload JPEG photos & videos fast through your home Wi-Fi network thanks to built in 802.11n speed. You are probably asking, how does this work, my camera does not have wireless (wi-fi) built into the camera???

How this does work is that you can purchase an SDHC card (reasonably priced in my opinion) that has a wireless transmitter built into the SDHC memory card. It is called, Eye-Fi Connect X2. Appears that the cards are available in a 4GB and 8GB’s.

Eye-Fi Connect X2

I am definitely putting one of these on my Christmas list. I love the idea that I can walk into the house with my camera, after a photo session, and my camera’s SDHC card will automatically transfer my photos to my PC. Doesn’t get any easier than that…

System Requirements

SDHC-compatible digital camera

Computer with Mac OS 10.5 or later; Windows SP3/Vista/Win7

100MB of free space

Wi-Fi router 802.11 b/g/n 2.4Ghz

Technical Specifications

4GB SDHC Memory: (up to 2000 photos or 1.5 hours of video depending on camera model , file resolution and other factors)

Viewing Computers (and Devices) That Are Connected To Your Wireless Network

August 3, 2011

In today’s world of home networking, wireless is the way to go; but, there are trade-offs in comparison to a wired network. The biggest trade-off is in the form of security. Wired networks are not as easily tapped into (or hacked) due that the packets of information are not broadcasted in the air like a wireless network. This is why it is necessary that you make every effort to secure your wireless network.

This article is not about how to secure your wireless network; however, if you do need a resource for that, I encourage you to read I Need A Hacker -The Importance of Securing Your Wi-Fi Connection . There are resources in that article to point you in the right direction.

What this article is about, is a small software utility, called Wireless Network Watcher, that will enable you to see what computers (and devices) are connected to your wireless (or wired) network.

Wireless Network Watcher

Wireless Network Watcher is a portable app that requires no installation. Simply download, run and watch the magic happen. This utility will scan your wireless network and will list out the IP address, MAC address, the company that manufactured the network card, and optionally the computer (or device) name. For example, as I was writing this article I fired up Wireless Network Watcher and it quickly scanned my network and showed my desktop computer, my netbook, my router and my Blackberry Phone. Point here is, do not let this tool make you feel you are not tech savvy enough to understand it. The more you run it, the more you will understand what computers (and devices) are yours and which ones are not. It is an invaluable tool to determine if someone else is connected to your network.

Another feature of Wireless Network Watcher is that it is my go to tool to determine the IP addresses (which can dynamically change) of the other computers. I often use UltraVNC to remote into my other PCs and knowing the current IP addresses makes connecting much easier.

System Requirements And Limitations

  • This utility works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
  • This utility can only scan a wireless network that you’re currently connected to. It cannot scan other wireless networks.
  • In rare cases, it’s possible that Wireless Network Watcher won’t detect the correct wireless network adapter, and then you should go to ‘Advanced Options’ window (F9), and manually choose the correct network adapter.
  • Although this utility is officially designed for wireless networks, you can also use it to scan a small wired network.

Kindle with FREE 3G + Wireless

July 23, 2011

The best selling item on Amazon, for 2 years running, has been the Kindle. Ironically, the Kindle is made by Amazon and is described as Amazon’s revolutionary wireless reading device. When it first hit the market, the Kindle immediately became popular. Finally, there was an electronic device that made sense with us middle aged folks (and older) that is straight from something you would have seen on “The Jetsons”.

Kindle 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 3G Works Globally, Graphite, 6″ Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology

Kindle

If you are new to the Kindle, let me tell you what the rave is all about. The Kindle is a wireless (tablet style) reading device, lighter than a paperback book, that gives you the ability to download books (electronically) via 3G or Wi-Fi. The cool part about the Kindle is that there is no monthly subscription fee or cost to connect to 3G. The cost factors in when you select and download a book. The last time I checked Amazon [CLICK HERE] , there was 1,006,663 books in the Kindle Bookstore.

If you are looking for a convenient way to satisfy that book reading addiction, then the Kindle may be your fix.

Feature Set of the most recent model of Kindle 3G and Wireless:

  • All-New, High-Contrast E Ink Screen– 50% better contrast with latest E Ink Pearl technology
  • Read in Bright Sunlight– No glare
  • New and Improved Fonts– New crisper, darker fonts
  • New Sleek Design– 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6″ size reading area
  • 17% Lighter– Only 8.7 ounces, weighs less than a paperback
  • Battery Life of Up to Two Months– A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off
  • Double the Storage– Up to 3,500 books
  • Books in 60 Seconds– Download books anytime, anywhere
  • Free 3G Wireless– No monthly payments, no annual contracts
  • Built-In Wi-Fi– In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots
  • 20% Faster Page Turns– Seamless reading
  • Enhanced PDF Reader– With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
  • New WebKit-Based Browser– Browse the web over Wi-Fi (experimental)
  • Special Offers – Special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don’t interrupt reading
